《Ashes of the New World Book 1: The Divine World》Chapter 4: Seek, the Guardian

After the group burned Mama Willow’s body and let her ashes be taken away by the wind, and allowed for the two sisters to mourn together. Sean, Quiver, Taurus and Norah traveled northward and reached another forest where they walked along on a graveled trail that was paved through the forest around them. Unlike the Silent Mist Forest, this normal forest was filled with sounds of all kinds of birds and snaps of twigs from the other animals that lived in the forest. They continued walking on the path. The angel and Norah staggered behind the group as Sean began talking to her.
“ So are you ready to train?”
“ Yeah! Lay it on me teach!”
“ Well I guess a good place to start is the basics of magic. There are two ways to be able to use magic: either you’re born with it or a God has blessed you with the ability. All magic is fueled by a person’s mana. There are two major categories of magic: Physical and Mental. Physical magic is elemental magic like earth, fire, water and air. Focus on the physical parts of the body. If you have a strong heart you’re able to use fire magic. Mental magic like dark, light, star, and dream magic requires you to focus more on the mind. For instance if you have a pure mind of sorts you can use light magic. Mental magic is the least common and is really reserved for divine beings, but many mortals have been able to use mental magic. It’s possible to combine physical and mental magic, but it’s rare. In your case Norah your magic is that special case since phoenixes originally could control fire they already had physical magic. But North’s magic, specifically, is the combination of the two,” Sean went on and on about how magic works. Though interesting, it numbed Norah’s brain. While Sean began to lose himself in the one sided conversation. Norah sneaked her way to go up to walk next to Taurus and gave him a look of curiosity. Taurus looked up at her with a tilted head.
“ What’s buggin’ you lass?”
“ Oh well. I saw this woman when I flew away… and she said not to trust the Hellhound… was she talking about you?”

“ I won’t lie to ya lass. I am a hellhound, but don’t worry I, well, we aren't gonna hurt you. I hope when ye gain your full power and maybe learn something new. You’ll make the right decision,” Taurus’s deer antlers once again grew out of the top of his head.
“ But you are from the Underworld! You have to be evil!”
“ Norah, if I were evil I would’ve already harmed you and your sister by now. Please just trust me, not everything is what it seems.”
“ But you lied to me about what you were..”
“ Norah I was scared that your mother and sister would’ve hurt me for what I am. Would you have helped me if I were a hellhound?”
“ Well of course I would’ve helped you. You were still injured.”
“ Since you helped me I am helping you. But Norah if you truly want to help people and help the world and help end this battle. Join Azrail’s side, because Azrail just wants all of this to be over. He doesn’t care about winning the stupid fight with the wench Vita he just cares about getting what’s rightfully his.”
“ Well when you put it like that-”
Norah was cut off by Sean tackling Taurus to the ground. Taurus snarled deeply and his scruff, and eyes flared to life into a green fire. Sean held his sapphire lance pointed at Taurus’s throat.
“ Don’t you dare speak ill of Vita! She is the perfect High Goddess that freed the angels from Azrail’s tyranny!”
“ Get off of me, you brainwashed-”
Quiver grabbed Sean into a choke hold telling him to calm down, and when he looked at Norah's terrified expression his world started to slowly go black.
Then he was suddenly on a horse on a cliff in a blizzard staring down at a little baby girl with Norah’s brown skin but the baby’s face was terrified and it’s cheeks were covered in streams that had been carved by tears. Then a large beam of turquoise light appeared in front of the horse Sean was on and it startled Sean awake.

Sean was panting heavily and looked around at his surroundings. He was leaning up against a tree in the middle of a forest that had a magical aroma in the air. Everything was just so whimsical, little lights decorated the leaves that sprouted from the branches on the trees. Glowing bugs fluttered between the trees leaving behind a trail of glittering dust. All of the plants were some shade of purple or orange. A thin mist lurked around the dim forest that moved and slithered as if it were alive. There were pale blue glowing patches under Sean’s feet. Sean then saw Norah was laying beside him fast asleep and at peace which made a part of Sean feel relieved. After looking around he noticed Quiver was sitting on a rock watching him and Norah. Taurus was missing however which only made every instinct in Sean’s body turn into a knot.
“ Ah so you’re finally awake. How was your nap?”
“ I-it was fine. Where’s the hellhound?”
“ You mean Taurus? He went to look for a Custos.”
“ An animal Guardian? We’re in their domain? Wow… I heard this place was wonderful but I didn’t think it was this… magical.”
“ Yeah it really is… anyway you need to not fight in front of Norah. I’m trying to keep her as innocent as possible so when this is all over she can live a normal life like my mother wanted.”
“ What do you want for Norah?”
“ Well… it doesn’t matter what I want. My mother was adamant about keeping Norah innocent, but I would just want Norah to leave… I love her but if I had any say I would’ve left her in the river where we found her. Because ever since she came into my life everything was about her, and I had to put my future on hold so that I could protect Norah. I mean she was chosen for a reason so I don’t see the point in keeping her from what she was born to do.”
“ So why do you stay? You could leave right now and never look back.”
“ Because she is still my sister. She’s the only family I have left… and I’m the only family she’s got. I just want to make sure Norah comes out alive and well.”
Norah yawned as she stretched her arms out then started fixing her messy silver hair. Quiver got off her rock and walked toward Norah to chit chat about small things.
What was that? A vision? Or just a hallucination? I shouldn’t dwell on that now, I need to make sure that hellhound doesn’t interfere with the Goddess’s plan. Sean thought as a rustle was heard coming from the bushes. Out emerged Taurus and a beast the size of a deer but it looked like a fox and it had the antlers of a moose. In it’s right antler was a bird’s nest that was currently empty. The beast had the jade eyes of a snake. It’s front legs had paws while the back legs were hooved. The beast kneeled to them and made an usual noise that sounded like a static purr. It rose to its feet and began to sniff them all aside from Taurus.
“ What’s your name? What are you?” Norah asked as she gently scratched behind the creature's ear.
“ Seek. I am Seek, a Custos,” his voice was hazy and echoed like the galactic fox that gave Norah her powers. Seek’s forked tongue flicked at Taurus and the hellhound responded by speaking in a strange language.
“ I see your mother failed to teach you the rich history of the world,” Seek said with a disappointed tone.
“ Well then how about everyone just stop blaming and tell me! I want to know! I’m sick of being kept in the dark about everything! Just someone tell me!”
“ No Norah! Seek just take us to the place so-”
“ No. The child will know. So everyone get comfortable and settle down. Because there are a lot of details left out of the Divine’s history.”
The group all sat around Seek and were ready to listen.
