《Zombie Shark Highway》THREE

By the time Kayla got to school the next morning, everyone at Point Chester Public had heard about the sharks.
Sarah Kimmel leaned against the lockers, her big blue eyes waiting impatiently for Kayla to give her more details.
"We're not supposed to talk about it."
Sarah laughed. "Well, it's a little late for that now! Justin's picture is all over the internet."
Kayla frowned. She never should have let him out of the cruiser.
Sarah leaned closer, her eyebrows practically touching her hairline. "He said some trucker got eaten."
Kayla's toes began to itch. She left her blood-smeared sneakers at home.
"They're investigating. They don't know what happened for sure." Kayla slammed her locker closed and turned to head to bio, but Sarah Kimmel wasn't done talking.
"They have to know! A bunch of sharks and a dead guy?"
"Missing," Kayla corrected. The police still didn't have a body.
"Ok, let's be serious. If there was as much blood as Justin Heard says, then the guy is dead. We might as well be realistic, right? I mean, unless Justin's lying about how much blood. You were there, what did you see? Was it like a puddle, or just drops?"
Kayla's head started to hurt. Sarah Kimmel had a reputation for being a gossip and Kayla was surprised at how hard she was working to live up to it. This was the first time Sarah Kimmel had ever talked to Kayla, but she was droning on and on like they were life-long besties. All thanks to Justin Heard.
She could see him at the other end of the hall -- Justin Heard and the rest of his drinking buddies loitering by the cafeteria doors. Clearly, the bell meant nothing to someone like Justin.
He looked up and his eyes caught hers between the bodies of his friends.

Heat rushed to Kayla's cheeks.
Then they all turned -- all of the caf guys suddenly registering Kayla's existence at once. The heat exploded down her neck, down her spine --
A hand blocked Kayla's view. "Hello?"
Kayla looked back at Sarah Kimmel who looked like she was waiting for something. "What?"
"I said, are you going too?"
"Going where?"
"Out to Highway 3," smiled Sarah. "With the guys."
Kayla's eyes darted back to Justin.
"They're gonna steal one of the teeth."
Kayla watched Sarah, bouncing on her knees, barely able to contain her excitement. "Teeth?"
"Yeah, one of the shark's teeth. Everyone's going."
"Who's everyone?"
Sarah shrugged. "You know, me, Madison Howard, Mike Arnold, Joey DeStefano. Those people."
So, all of them. The entire social elite of Point Chester Public, driving out to highway 3 to steal a dead, diseased shark's tooth. Like the whole thing was just entertainment. Just a joke.
Justin stood there, laughing with his friends. She was stupid. So stupid to let him out of that car, to let him take those pictures. A picture wasn't enough for Justin Heard. Now he needed a piece of the scene too? As if he had some kind of special right to do it?
Furious, Kayla marched over to the group, right up to Justin. "Can I talk to you?"
"Uh, hi Kayla. How's it going?" He looked to his buddies who were already snickering. Let them. Kayla didn't care.
"You're going out to Highway 3?" she demanded.
The tall goon to Justin's left burst out laughing. Joey DeStefano. "Uh oh, here we go, guys. Officer Girard is on the case!"
Kayla ignored him. "You think you can just drive out there and goof around? A man died there, Justin! Don't you have any respect for that?"

Justin blinked. His face was completely blank, and Kayla couldn't tell if he was mad or upset or what. And it was infuriating.
"Missing," he said, finally. "That's what your dad said. The man's missing."
"What's your point?"
Justin said nothing, his casual stare measuring every bit of her. She suddenly worried that her numbers wouldn't be very high in those eyes.
"You think you're so great," she growled. "Think you can just stir up shit wherever you like and that makes you a big man."
"More man than you can handle, sweetheart," laughed Joey.
Kayla's stomach shot into her throat and she gulped. Justin saw it. He smirked -- that same half smirk he'd had on his face in the cruiser.
"You should come with us," he said.
Asshole.
Kayla turned away. The decision was made. She would never, ever, speak to Justin Heard again.
"What's the matter, Girard?" he called after her. "Afraid big daddy Sheriff won't approve?"
She turned back at that, her chest swollen with so much hate she thought her ribs might break.
He stood there -- that irritating grin that said he had her all figured out. Said he knew her. Said she was nothing more than a good girl who followed all the rules her Sheriff daddy taught her.
But Justin Heard didn't know Kayla Girard. He didn't know her at all.
"I'm in," she said.
And that's when Justin Heard's half smirk spread into a dimpled smile.

Apollyon's Curse
Within the pages of folklore and fantasy, tales of people who chase after the dream of eternity, of living forever, rarely find a happy ending. They are either struck by the grim truth of reality, give up, and return to mortality or face a ghastly realization of their wishes. The latter often the worse fate, as they come to realize, only far too late, that what they sacrificed was worth far more than the time they gained. Ultimately, the common thread in these stories is that “immortality is as much a curse as it is a blessing”. People either realize it early and give up or are doomed to inevitably face its consequences. In the world Enrich lives in, that saying does hold merit. Every pathway towards eternal life has shackles of its own. They bring those high above down to the ground, evening the playing field. It is thanks to these fundamental laws that ambitious mortals are able to defy the heavens and achieve immortality themselves. The variety of methods result in each of these bindings varying in intensity and degree of freedom. Enrich’s path doesn't break this trend. Though, after what he did to himself, most wouldn’t even consider him a living thing anymore. On the day of his ascension, a world’s worth of souls were melted and recast. On that day, the human’s path had reached its conclusion, recast into Apollyon. An artifact, a weapon, is eternal, after all. As for the curse? The payment will be made, as it must. So why not offload the curse to someone else? Mortals throw their lives away for all manner of petty reasons, noble or otherwise, especially in desperation. Eventually, someone will be willing to foot the bill. Most will if given the chance. The bait is far too tempting, after all. Power, status, knowledge. All at their fingertips. If only they say “yes”. And Apollyon is very willing to help any lost souls. If they give up everything in return, of course.

Most villains, no matter how terrifying, are defeated by a hero on the first try. The hero may be forced to flee or otherwise delay the real confrontation, but it’s still certain that he will win when it occurs. But some villains simply defeat all comers. Against an opponent like that, the only options are to give up or to try again. --- This story is a participant of the WriTEr's pledge. In short, I promise to finish it, and may I be Hall of Shamed if I don't.
