《Slowly But Surely》13. Stolen Life

"I know how you can check if I'm right about Chat Noir's identity without me revealing it to you." Felix said as he took a bite of his strawberry ice cream with chocolate chips. "And if I'm wrong, then you won't reveal it by accident either."
Marinette narrowed her eyes at him.
"I'm listening." She said, licking her unusual lime-and-mango mixed one.
"What if I told you my girlfriend has long blonde hair, and blue eyes, and her name starts with an 'A'?" Felix smirked.
Marinette's eyes widened.
"Your what?!" She yelled, probably not even realizing that her reaction was a little... extreme.
Felix looked at her for a moment, startled.
"I uh..." He cleaned his throat. "This is a hypothetical situation."
"Oh... uh... right..." Marinette was blinking at him. "I thought it was, haha..." She laughed nervously.
"Anyway..." Felix shook his head. "It wouldn't tell you anything about me, right? I can still be anyone in this city."
"I see what you're getting at." Marinette said slowly, her face still slightly foggy.
"So would you do that?" Felix asked.
"Do what?" Marinette blinked again as if her thoughts were far away from their conversation.
"Ask your partner about his girlfriend, obviously," Felix rolled his eyes. "Describing her the way I just did."
"Right!" Marinette exclaimed as if waking up. "But Chat... He doesn't have a girlfriend."
"That's what we'll soon find out." Felix said with a mysterious smile.
*
"No, you're wrong, it can't be him!" Adrien exclaimed, looking at him.
But there was a pleading tone in his voice, as if somewhere deep inside he knew that Felix was telling the truth.
Ladybug's meeting with Chat Noir went exactly as Felix had envisioned.
"How do you know that?!" Chat asked in a surprising voice, when he heard Ladybug's description of his girlfriend.
Ladybug sighed.
"He was right." She said, shaking her head. "I knew he was."
She looked at her partner again, who was still staring at her as if she just told him she was his baby sister, who was kidnapped and raised by gypsies and who finally found him.
"Do you know my identity, LB?" Chat asked carefully. "Did I screw it up somehow?"
"No, no, Chat!" Ladybug calmed him down. "Not yet anyway." And seeing Chat's eyes widening again, added. "Can you answer one more question for me?"
"Of course, but... will you tell me what is going on?" He asked.
"I will. Soon. But not now. I need to think first." Ladybug admitted. "But tell me, is there any unpleasant male figure with some sort of a dark nature in your immediate environment? Someone who is important to you?"
Chat looked at her suspiciously.
"Are you sure you don't know my identity? Because you pretty much describe my... Someone who is important to me."
Ladybug sighed again.
"I need to go now." She said, standing up from the roof where they were sitting. "But we're coming back to this conversation soon." She promised and went to talk to Felix.
"Ok, I'm ready." She said, when they met. "Spill it out."
Felix told her that Chat Noir is Adrien and Shadow Moth is Gabriel and explained why he was sure of this. And after Marinette's slight shock, which, however, didn't last long – everything seemed too obvious to her when Felix said their names aloud, as if all the little details found their places in a huge mechanism – they decided to call Adrien to Marinette's house to develop a plan for miraculous' confiscation.

Felix was the one who voiced the name of the Paris villain to his cousin.
"No, you're wrong, it can't be him!" Adrien exclaimed, looking at him.
"Since I wasn't mistaken about who Ladybug and Chat Noir are," Felix said, in a slightly irritated voice. "There is a high probability that I am right now as well."
Adrien took a step back and looked at his cousin as if he punched him in the face with no reason.
"You know who Chat Noir is..." Then his face lit up with a sudden illumination. "You were Red Cardinal!" Adrien exhaled. "That's why you looked so similar to..."
"You're smarter than your pretty face suggests." Felix replied, rolling his eyes. "I haven't seen a single photo of Mr. Bug in my life."
"You haven't?" Marinette's surprised voice came from behind Felix. "But..."
Felix turned to face her.
"How do you think I figured his identity out?" He asked impatiently – for his taste it was taking more time than necessary. "Well this and the other thing we discussed before." He added, alluding to the jealous Adrien.
"Oh." Marinette nodded, but still looked amazed.
Adrien turned to Marinette as well, looking at her as if he only now noticed her presence. Then he looked at Felix, then at her again, and his eyes slowly widened.
He raised his hand and pointed his index finger at her.
"You are Ladybug!" Adrien yelled in an accusatory tone, and added after thinking for a moment. "And I am an idiot!.."
"It's hard to disagree when you put it that way..." Felix grumbled.
"Feli!" Marinette exclaimed, frowning at him severely.
"Ok, ok!" Felix raised his hands in a sign of 'surrender'. "He said it himself...
"But we can't know each other's identities..." Adrien said as if waking up and started walking back and forth across the room. "Ladybug will kill me..." He muttered, as if still in the process of realization. Then he stopped abruptly and turned to Marinette again. "Oh my god, Marinette, you are Ladybug!"
"I thought we already stated this fact." Marinette smiled shyly at him.
"But then..." Adrien shifted his gaze to Felix. "How long have you known?!"
"About you?" Felix asked, crossing his arms over his chest with a smug smile. "Or about her?" He nodded at Marinette. "Or about your father? Or about Foxy and her boyfriend?"
Adrien's eyes widened again.
"I knew it wasn't a coincidence when you called her Foxy!" Adrien squeaked.
"As I said, you're smarter than you look." Felix rolled his eyes again.
"You knew their identities?" Marinette asked, turning to Adrien.
"Since Rocketeer..." The model admitted, wrapping his arm around his neck in embarrassment. "Nino kind of was jealous of Alya for me and told another me about it..."
"This is all very interesting," Felix interrupted in an impatient tone. "But can we move on to what we are here for?"
"Right..." Adrien sighed. "So you think my father is..."
"I know your father is Shadow Moth." Felix corrected.
"But he was aku..." Adrien started.
"Sentimonster." Felix retorted.
Adrien just stared at him with his mouth open.
"So," Felix continued, ignoring his cousin's bewildered expression. "Since we have this all clear, let's move on to the actual plan." Felix grabbed his chin with the fingers of one hand, placing its elbow on the other. "I'll invite Gabriel out to lunch to make sure he's not at home when you two come for the miraculous."

"He won't agree." Adrien protested. "Father hardly leaves the house."
"He will." Felix assured him. "He knows that I know his identity. Or at least that I suspect him." He spoke in a cold, calculating tone. "He already tried to akumatize me to fix this problem and confuse me."
"He did?" Adrien looked at him in surprise.
Felix just shrugged his shoulders in response and continued.
"If I hint that the conversation will be about his little secret," He said. "Gabriel will come."
"But he would certainly take the miraculous with him!" Marinette argued.
"He won't." Felix replied, turning to her. "He will expect a trap — that I will try to somehow get hold of them or betray him publicly. Therefore, he will leave the miraculous at home."
"But..." Adrien muttered to himself, still catching up with realizations. "Natalie was Mayura..."
"What was that?" Marinette asked, looking at him.
"It's just..." Adrien sighed slowly. "I still can't believe it."
"Get it together, Adrien!" Felix called. "I understand that running around rooftops in a leather suit must be fun. But you can still do it afterwards, when the city is no longer in danger."
"You are right." Adrien nodded. "OK." Then added more to himself again. "Not that it was all that surprising, after all. Gabriel Agreste never claimed the title of father of the year."
"Don't push him like that." Marinette whispered to Felix, slightly squeezing his shoulder. "See how depressed he is?"
But to Felix's dismay this touch didn't last long as Marinette went up to Adrien and took his hand.
"Adrien," She called softly, "You have friends and family." Marinette glanced at Felix. "Who loves you and will always support you."
Adrien sighed.
"Thank you, Marinette." He smiled and pulled her into a hug. Then he pulled away and shook his head in disbelief. "God, I can't really call you 'my lady' anymore, can I?"
"Well you've got yourself a girlfriend, haven't you?" Marinette smiled back at him.
"Yeah." Adrien said dreamily. "Aurora is amazing." Then he looked at Marinette with a sly, even mischievous Chat Noir's smirk. "Looks like you've got yourself someone as well." And nodded at Felix.
"I... uh..." Marinette blushed. "We are..."
"So can we finish our plan already?" Felix interrupted her, ignoring the heat in his face. "No wonder the two of you have been chasing after him to no avail for so long." He grumbled.
"I like it when he gets grumpy." Marinette said to Adrien conspiratorially, ignoring Felix's remark.
Adrien looked between the other two.
"God, this is all so crazy." He sighed, smiling. "I don't know if I can get used to it."
*
The miraculous were stolen according to Felix's plan while Gabriel left to meet him and an unsuspecting Natalie was resting in her room.
The super heroes also discovered the Shadow Moth's lair and Adrien's mother in it, who, together with containing her captula, was teleported with the help of Kaalki first to Marinette's room, then, after talking with Felix and his mother, telling her half a truth for now, — to the Graham de Vanily house — in the same way.
When Gabriel realized that the whole meeting with Felix was a setup, and embittered came home to his nephew, Amelie Graham de Vanily met him on the threshold.
"If you don't want to go to jail for keeping my sister in the basement for years without proper medical care, making everyone think she's dead, get out of here." She said coldly. "And never come back."
Gabriel said he wouldn't leave it like that, but chose freedom and retreated.
*
"How is it going?" Felix asked, when Adrien and Marinette came to his house to visit Emilie.
"He's terribly pissed off." Adrien shook his head with disgust.
"I'm so sorry you have to live in the same house with him, Kitty." Marinette supported, patting Adrien's shoulder.
"I talked to my mother." Felix said casually. "Adrien will turn 18 in 2 weeks."
Adrien looked at him in bewilderment.
"So?" He blinked.
"You will get the legal right to make decisions." His cousin explained. "Including how and where you live."
"But I'm still studying, so I can't..." Adrien started.
"We would like you to come live with us." Felix interrupted him. "You can be next to your mother and study as long as you need. You won't have to worry about anything."
For a minute Adrien looked at Felix with an absolutely stunned look, then in wild delight he rushed to hug his cousin.
"Thank you so much, Felix!" He yelled. "You are the best cousin in the world!"
Felix pushed him away, rolling his eyes, but it was clear that he was glad to bring good news to the tired of bad ones Adrien.
"Yeah, yeah..." Felix muttered. "Stop squeezing me!"
"I think you will get along with Plagg!" Adrien laughed, letting his cousin go finally.
"Who's Plagg?" Felix asked, narrowing his eyes.
"That would be me!" A small black kitten-like creature declared, flying out of Adrien's pocket.
Felix raised his eyebrows in surprise, smiling.
"He is almost as cute as the rest of them!" He admitted.
"I'm not cute!" Plagg protested. "I am the god of destruction!"
"I didn't think you were capable of rating something in the 'cute' category." Marinette smiled slyly, standing next to Felix.
She was looking at him dreamily and Felix felt a lingering hot feeling spread in his chest when their eyes met.
"There are some things in life," He said, taking Marinette's hand without looking away from her. "That are so exclusive that they don't follow any rules." Felix slowly brought her hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles. "Not even mine."
Marinette stared at him with her beautiful huge eyes, a blush flaring on her cheeks as her chest heaved.
"Come on, Plagg," Adrien whispered, tiptoeing out of Felix's room. "Let's give them some privacy."
