《Slowly But Surely》1. Another motive

It was the morning of his first day at school.

Well, Parisian school that is. And the akuma alert was already making so much noise, before even the first lesson was over. But there was no one to blame except for himself, and Felix knew it.

It was actually his idea — to move to live in Paris for some time. And he managed to not only convince his mother to do it, but even to make her think it came to her own head first. She would do it for him anyway, but the necessity to explain to her his motives was... not something Felix was willing to do at the moment, so...

So two days ago they arrived from London and unpacked in a spacious house that his mother bought a few years ago. The house was big enough to breathe freely and feel comfortable, but not too huge to feel empty and inhabitant. Perfect choice.

Plus, it didn't feel comfortable or even safe to stay in Gabriel's house for too long. Not that The owner himself would be happy if Felix and his mother expressed a desire for a longer visit.

His last visit to this city, and especially to Agreste mention, left Felix in conflicting emotions. It was like an unfinished business to do, an unsolved case to resolve. And it annoyed him a lot. Enough to create an opportunity to finish what he'd started.

And maybe Felix had another motive to come back to Paris, but it wasn't to be considered for now. Not until he made sure he really had it.

Felix looked around the class.

Everyone was up from their chairs, talking, and the teacher was making some arrangements about where they should go. But students weren't paying much attention. It wasn't the first time they had to interrupt the lesson for akuma, Felix guessed.

"I need to go to the bathroom." Adrien said, already standing in the aisle of the open door. Then, to Felix's surprise, he went out, not waiting for the teacher's answer, and closed the door behind him.

That was weird. Did Adrien eat something bad? Or was it a nervous reaction to the situation? Adrien was sheltered most part of his life, but till now he had to be used to the noise, right?

"I need to go to the bathroom too!" Another voice said, and Felix raised his eyes, pulling himself from his thoughts.

He recognized the girl from the video he deleted on Adrien's phone once. Felix had a good photographic memory, and recognized most of his cousin's classmates from that video.

In the meantime the girl opened the door and made an attempt to go outside, when she was caught by another girl by the wrist.

This girl wasn't on the video, but she was hanging on Adrien's hand all morning before the lesson started, so Felix, being a person who treasured his personal space high enough, didn't like her already.

"It's dangerous, Marinette!" The second girl said with obviously fake care in her voice. "You have to stay with the class!"

"No, Lila!" Marinette exclaimed, trying to free her hand.

"But Marinette! You know it's not safe." Lila insisted, holding her. Felix could say she didn't really care about the other one's safety, but had some alternative motives. "I'm sure Adrien will join us soon." She smiled slyly and arrogantly.

And there it was, Felix smirked, how easily he could read them! She just doesn't want the first girl to meet Adrien alone. Why would it matter though?

Ohh. Right. Wasn't the first girl the one to confess in that video? Those were just two girls fighting over Adrien.

Same old, same old...

"What part of the word 'no' didn't you understand?!" Marinette yelled, pulled her hand away abruptly, and ran outside of the class.

Felix felt a slight phantom sensation on his skin as if he was hit on his jaw.

The last time he heard those words said with the same voice, he got punched in the face. He remembered it clearly, because the case entered his registry of mistakes that should never be made again.

It happened when he pretended to be Adrien and tried to kiss Ladybug .

There was another reason he remembered that day well though.

There was something Freudian in this, but Felix had a weak spot for women like his mother — outwardly soft and gentle, but strong and hard on the inside. And it was exactly the impression Ladybug left him with.

Felix was smart enough to put two and two together.

Maybe he still needed some proves, that would confirm his suspicions 100%. Like the proves he needed to make sure Gabriel was Shadowmoh.

But Felix used to trust his intuition and logic, so at this moment he was almost sure: the Marinette-girl was Ladybug.

Felix got up from his chair. It would be better to clarify the situation right away. He stood up and left the class unnoticed in the common noise and chatter.

He followed the path of distraction and was looking from behind the corner at the two heroes fighting the third unfamiliar figure in the middle of the street.

Felix watched Ladybug's movements carefully, seeking confirmation of his guess, when he heard a cough and looked around.

An auburn-haired girl with glasses was hiding behind an advertising column with Adrien's photo on it, peeking out to take a picture of the fight. She coughed occasionally and seemed generally unhealthy.

Felix remembered her face from that video as well, and from the video reports on the most informative web-side about Ladybug he found while doing his research on miraculous.

So she was sick and that's why absent in class today. But bold enough to run for making a scoop on her idol anyway.

Felix rolled his eyes and shook his head disapprovingly. Though she was good in her reports, still. Such a fangirl. What to add?

The fight was still going on, and Felix focused his attention on the scene, leaving the ailing journalist on the periphery of his view. But the next moment he saw Akuma's shot swept over the street and hit the wall of the building behind her.

The girl was so passionate about the shooting of her video, that she didn't even pay attention to the cracks in the wall, threatening to fall right on her.

Felix had only a moment to think and make his decision, but his speed of reaction had never let him down.

So, 1) in a few seconds the wall will fall on the journalist; 2) she isn't even aware of the danger; 3) the heroes don't see the girl because of the advertising column, behind which she is hiding; 4) Ladybug's powers will probably repaired the damage, so the risk from his side wasn't necessary, but... damn!

Felix's mother didn't raise a coward or an insensitive villain, as many thought of him!

Felix jumped out of his hiding place and in two jumps found himself next to the dumbfounded journalist, grabbed her and rolled with her on the asphalt away from the column.

"Hey!" The girl was indignant, trying to escape from his grasp. "What do you think you're doing..." She started, when the wall of the affected building collapsed directly onto the advertising column, covering several meters around with debris.

The journalist was still sitting on the pavement, blinking in shock at the spot where she had just stood, when Ladybug landed next to her, probably attracted by the noise.

"Alya!" She yelled, helping the sick girl up to her feet. "What are you doing here sick?!" She demanded.

"Sorry, gir... Ladybug!" She apologized, making a puppy-face. "It was hard to sit on the bench, when..."

"And you!" Ladybug interrupted her, turning to Felix, who was currently calculating if his immunity was strong enough not to let him get sick with journalist's germs on the very first day of school. "You are supposed to be evacuated with your class! Didn't your teacher explain the procedure to you?!"

"I find it more entertaining to save sick journalists." Felix smirked.

Ladybug opened her mouth to say something, when a new loud sound of the fight was heard.

They all turned to see Chat Noir blocking the Akuma's attacks behind them. Ladybug turned back to the civilians.

"No time for a safety lecture." She said, "Can you both move to safety by yourself?" To Felix's surprise she narrowed her eyes at the journalist.

"Ok, ok, LB!" The girl caught and raised her hands with a giving up gesture. "I'm good and out. By!" She said quickly, threw a short look in Felix's direction and disappeared in the nearest alley.

Ladybug looked at Felix.

"I can take care of myself." He placed one hand on his waist.

She looked at where the column used to stand and back at him. Something flashed through her eyes fast, too fast for Felix to recognize, what.

Then Ladybug nodded and returned to fight along with her partner.

Well, that wasn't how Felix imagined their next meeting to go, but hey! He wasn't the one to complain. Felix could be conservative in the way he looked, but definitely not in the way his brain was working, quickly adapting to any changing circumstances.

Maybe he didn't find one hundred percent proof of his Marinette-theory, but during this meeting he definitely found inside himself some evidence that his hidden motive to move to Paris was valid.

And this motive was called Ladybug.
