《Forward In Time》Chapter Thirty

Aang watched as Korra sparred with Wing. He fires two meteorites at her, but she dodges them and sends her metal cable at him. He dodges it twice, traps it on the ground, and bends it back at her. The impact of the cable knocks Korra to the ground.
Meanwhile, Bolin sparred with Wei, having difficulties with metalbending. Toph walks up next to Aang.
"How's he doing?" Toph asked.
"Still having difficulties." Aang replied, "I thought you were supposed to be teaching him metalbending."
"I am, he's training right now." Toph nudged Aang, "Remember our training?"
"Yeah, that was almost as terrifying as fighting Ozai."
"Hang on, I think I got it." Bolin said to Wei, "Let me just try this." He attempts and fails to bend a meteorite, "Nope, okay maybe-"
He is cut off as he gets nailed with a slab of metal by Wei.
"Trial by fire. It's the best way to learn metalbending." Wei said.
"He's definitely your grandson." Aang told Toph with a smirk.
Bolin ducks as a meteorite is sent toward him. He quickly bends a pebble at his attacker, directly hitting his forehead.
Mako approaches the scene with Asami, "Whoa. Nice shot, Bolin!" Wei grabs his forehead with both hands and makes little moans of pain, "But I thought you were supposed to be practicing metalbending, not earthbending."
Wei rubs his red forehead, "Yeah, cheater." He crosses his arms.
"Mako, metalbending is extremely difficult." Bolin argued, "No one gets it right away, if they can get it at all! It's not normal!"
"Don't stress about, Bolin. Twinkletoes took forever to learn earthbending. If he can learn it, then you can learn metalbending." Toph reassured.
"Did you just... encourage him?" Aang asked with a tone of surprise.
"Yeah..." Toph paused, "OH MY SPIRITS I'M TURNING INTO YOU!" Aang started laughing as she continued, "We can't hang out anymore. You're too good of an influence."
"Guys, it's time to get cleaned up." Asami said, "Tonight is Opal's farewell dinner."
Everyone started walking to their rooms to prepare for the dinner.
"So, how come you never let me teach you metalbending?" Toph asked Aang as they walked back into the palace together.
"What?" Aang aasked with confusion.
"Everytime I mention it, you change the subject. And don't use the same 'I had a hard time at learning earthbending so I don't think I can learn metalbending' excuse. I know that's not the case."
Aang sighed, "For a blind girl you can see right through me sometimes."
"Answer the question Twinkletoes."
"I don't know. Maybe I don't want to be too powerful."
"What's wrong with being powerful?"
"Well, right now it's putting everyone I care about in danger. Considering I'm the only Avatar who can give and take away bending. Besides, I probably wouldn't be able to learn it. I barely learned earthbending."
Toph stopped walking, which also made Aang stop, "Listen Twinkletoes, there's nothing wrong with having power. As long as it doesn't go to your head, which would never happen to you, you can bend any element you want. You're the Avatar. And you were twelve when you learned earthbending, but now you're a great earthbender. Not as great as me of course... but you shouldn't be afraid to learn new bending styles just because you don't want to be 'too powerful' or you're scared of failing."
Aang slowly smiled, "Since when did you start giving encouraging speeches?"

Toph rolled her eyes, "Since you sent Sugar Queen with the other airbenders. Someone had to step up to give you advice. Snoozles is terrible at it."
Aang laughed, "Thanks Toph. Maybe... maybe I might try to learn metalbending. I guess it would help to protect people."
"That's the spirit." Toph punched him in the arm, "Now let's go eat. I'm tired of all this mushy stuff."
----
Later at Opal's farewell dinner, the chef walks over and gives Opal her plate.
"Thanks for making my favorite meal." Opal said.
"I'm really going to miss you, Opal. No one appreciates my raw veggie wraps like you do." The chef walks away to serve the remaining plates of food.
"I'm so excited to be going to the Northern Air Temple." Opal said as everyone began eating, "I've only ever read about them, but I've always wanted to go to an Air Temple."
"It'll definitely be nice to see a temple back in its original days." Zuko said, "They're still being restored in our time."
"So you're not coming with us to find more airbenders?" Korra asked.
"We'll catch up with you guys after checking in on the Northern Air Temple." Sokka replied, "We won't be leaving until tomorrow, though. Toph wants to give Bolin one last metalbending lesson before leaving."
"Also, Twinkletoes is missing his girlfriend." Toph said, "This is probably the longest they've been away from each other."
Aang blushed, "Actually, I want to see what the temple looks like. But I do want to see Katara."
"Kid, can I give you some relationship advice?" Varrick says to Aang.
"Umm, I've been dating Katara for a few years. I think I'm good."
"Well, your loss." Varrick sits straight in his chair, "Zhu Li!" He snaps his fingers, "bring the, uh, thing."
Zhu Li appears in a flash next to Varrick and hands him a contraption from a bag, "Check out my latest invention," The device had a knob in the center and a red, yellow, and green indicator on top, "an airbender finder."
Asami takes the machine from Varrick as Korra points her fork at the device, "Wait, that can find airbenders?"
Asami points the device toward Aang. She moves the device up and down but nothing happens, "Uh... I think it's broken." She hands the gadget back to Varrick.
"It's not broken. He needs to airbend into it!" Varrick says as he waves his hands around in a bending motion. He grabs the airbender finder, "How else do you expect the thing to work?"
"What's the point of an airbender finder if they have to airbend Into it?" Sokka asked.
Varrick does not look pleased.
Meanwhile, at the other side of the dining table, Mako strains to hear the conversation, "What's going on? I can't hear anything. I hate sitting down here!" He grabs his glass as Aiwei watches his outburst. He notices Aiwei next to him, staring at him awkwardly, "Uh, not because of you."
"I can tell you're lying." Aiwei said dryly.
Mako slumps in his chair and sips his drink with an embarrassed expression as Suyin taps her glass to get everyone's attention. A metallic object tapping against the glass three times is heard.
Suyin stands up with a glass raised, "Everyone, if I could have your attention please? Tonight, my beautiful little girl leaves for the Northern Air Temple." She places a hand on her necklace, "Opal, none of us could be more proud of you. You're an incredible daughter, sister, friend," she lays a hand on her daughter's shoulder, "and soon to be," Suyin bends down a bit and Opal rests against her mother's shoulder, "airbending master.

Suyin gives a kiss on Opal's head. The twins sniffle and Huan rolls his eyes. Suyin raises her glass up again, "Here's to Opal. May she help lead us into the new era!"
Everyone raises their glass for a toast.
----
After dinner, the group goes to the docking bay to say bye to Opal before the airship takes off. She stands at the window of the ship, waving goodbye to her family and friends. The others return the wave.
Kuvira, who was standing behind the group, pulls out a radio from a metal bag near her hip.Kuvira, "Lock it down for the night."
Lin gives Korra a smile, "We'll head out first thing in the morning. After Bolin finishes his metalbending lessons."
"Better rest up Rocky." Toph said as she punched Bolin in the arm, "I'm not going easy on you this time."
Bolin rubbed his arm as she walked away, "Wow, that hurts."
"Good luck buddy." Aang said as he patted Bolin's shoulder.
"Why do I feel like I'm going to die tomorrow?" Bolin asked as he followed everyone else. Korra laughs and walks next to him with her arm resting on his back
The duo walks away as the metal petals of the city start to close.
----
Zaheer and his gang quietly peering out from under the bridge. A guard with a metallic staff in hand looks down at the bridge for a few seconds before walking off. Zaheer waves his hand and signals to everyone to continue moving forward.
Another guard patrols the sheltered walkway as the bad guys use the cover of darkness to sneak past the walkway undetected. They head toward a guest house in the far end.
Bolin lays in his bed, snoring, while Pabu is curled up on top of the blanket and the fire ferret perks up with a squeak. Pabu leaps off the bed and hops over to the nearby window sill and looks out, noticing the four criminals. He paws against the glass and squeaks loudly in alarm in an attempt to wake his owner jolting Bolin awake.
"What?" His pet continues to shrill, "What's going on?" He sinks back and lays down to his pillow in annoyance, "Pabu, sleep!"
Back outside the window, P'Li and Ghazan ducks down an alley between two guest houses while Zaheer and Ming-Hua hide under a window. Zaheer directs his gang onward to the adjacent bedroom window: Aang's. They crouch down beside it, and Ming-Hua raises a water tentacle up and forms a small sickle at the end. She uses the ice sickle to scratch the glass and carves a hole into the window with water bending.
Inside of the room that Ming-Hua is attempting to break into, Momo hears the comotion and perks up from his place on the bed. Aang, however, was deeply asleep.
The sickle on the window makes a complete circle. Water encases the cut glass and it pulls away quietly. Another water tentacle arm holding three red darts is soon raised.
Momo jumps to alert his owner, but he is quickly knocked out by a shirshu-spit dart. Aang wakes up to the sound of Momo's chitter, as Zaheer bends a blast of air into the window. He avoids it and jumps out of his bed, attempting to airbend, but he is hit by a dart as he lands. Ghazan and P'Li enter and picks him up as he loses consciousness.
Back in Bolin's room, as Pabu leaps onto the bed to get his owner's full attention, "Huh? What? Oh, Pabu." The fire ferret jumps back to the window, "It's not play time right now. Okay, we are seriously going to have to have a talk-" He sees an unconscious Aang being held by the fleeing fugitives, "What the heck?! They've got Aang. They've got Aang!"
Mako wakes up in the other bed and they quickly exit their room. Meanwhile, Naga hears the commotion and wakes up Korra.
She groans and opens her eyes, "What is it girl?" She gasps when she sees the Red Lotus and quickly jumps out of bed, running out of her room.
Mako blasts fire at the Red Lotus, "Let him go!"
Bolin sends at a boulder shortly after Mako's attack, but P'Li absorbs the fire, while Ming-Hua stops the boulder with waterbending. She sends a line of water at the brothers, but Mako counters it with more firebending. P'Li and Zaheer attack, which Mako and Bolin also avoid. They hide behind a pillar.
Mako yells to the guards at the top towers, "They've got Aang!"
An alarm begin to blare loudly, and two guards activate the spotlights and direct their beam down on the criminals.
"So much for the element of surprise." Ming-Hua says.
"Back-up plan." Ghazan said.
P'Li turns and fires a blast at each spotlight before curving a third around the pillar Mako and Bolin are using for cover, sending them flying to land outside Asami's door. She runs out to help them as Korra joins them.
"We can't let them take Aang." Korra says.
"I don't think they're going to get far." Asami said, "Look!"
One of Zaofu's guards attacks the group, but is easily overpowered. The criminals try to flee, but are stopped in their tracks as they are surrounded with slabs of metal, bent by Lin Beifong. Wei and Wing add onto the pile, backed up by Kuvira and more guards.
"We have you surrounded. It's over. Release the Avatar!" Kuvira demands.
Lava begins to flow out from underneath the pile, evidently bent by Ghazan. Lin uses a rock pillar to propel herself away from the deadly lava, and Kuvira and another guard do the same with their metal cables. The metal cage holding the criminals slowly falls apart under the magma.
"No way! That guy is lavabending!" Bolin says, "That's awesome... ly not good for us."
The Beifong estate courtyard has become a battleground as Toph, Zuko and Sokka runs outside after hearing the commotion. The Metal Clan and both Team Avatars are pinned down by P'Li while Ghazan and Ming-Hua protect her from retaliatory attacks.
Aang regained consciousness but is still paralyzed.
"I'm going to create some cover. We've got to get out of here!" Zaheer says.
He begins to airbend a mask of smoke from Ghazan's lava but is caught by the wrist by a cable of one of the guards, who is able to reel Zaheer off the platform. Ghazan sends a lava bomb at the guard who breaks cover to go after Zaheer, but it is blocked by another guard with a metal slab. Bolin, Mako, Lin, and Asami take cover together behind a slab of metal in order to avoid the criminals' attacks, firing off some of their own.
P'Li notices them and arcs a combustion blast to hit them, but it is blocked just short of connecting by another metal slab bent by Suyin and her twin sons, who join them.
"How did they get in here?" Lin asked her sister.
Everyone ducks reflexively as a combustion attack detonates nearby.
"I don't know, but we're not letting them escape!" Suyin replied.
They look over, as three guards use more metal slabs to create a bridge to get to the criminals. Ghazan knocks the guards off with earthbending.
"There's no way to cross that moat." Asami says.
Suyin looks up at the ceiling dome, "We don't need to cross it. Lin and I can drop in from the dome on cables."
"That's a great idea. Except we'll get blown up the second that third-eyed freak sees us." Lin says sarcastically. Another blast explodes as if to prove her point.
"She's a combustionbender. If one of you can stun her, her powers will be knocked out temporarily."
"Time for the boomerang." Sokka said with a smirk.
"There's too much going on." Zuko said, "This isn't like when Combustion Man attacked us, one of the others will see it."
"You're right." Sokka said, a little disappointedly, "We need something small. Like a rock."
"Bolin can land a shot." Mako said.
"I can?"
"You have to take her out right before we drop down." Suyin said.
"I do?"
"You'll have to." Toph said, "I can't see where to shoot the rock unless someone directs me. It'll be easier if you do it."
"But what about Korra?"
Korra placed a hand on Bolin's shoulder and smiled encouragingly, "You've got this."
Bolin took a deep breath and nodded.
At the top of the dome, the Beifong family stands above the battlezone as the dome.
"If we get in trouble, metalbend us up." Suyin tells her son.
Wing speaks into a walkie-talkie, "We're in position."
"Copy that." Mako says before turning to his brother, "It's Bolin time."
"All right. Bolin time. Bolin time!"
Bolin fires a boulder at P'Li, but she ducks and avoids it. The criminals immediately start firing attacks toward Team Avatar's slab. Attacks go back and forth.
"I can't get a clean shot!" Bolin says
"You have to!"
"Are we a go?" Wing asks.
"No go!" Mako replies.
"Copy that, we're a go."
"I said no! Wait!"
He is too late. Suyin and Lin drop down. Mako peers back at the criminals, who are preoccupied with the guards. P'Li looks up and sees Suyin and Lin.
"Bolin, take the shot!"
P'Li grins and gets ready to fire as Bolin gets up and quickly launches a tiny pebble at her. The pebble hits her dead-centre in her third-eye tattoo, knocks her head back, and causes her attack to explode right above her team. The explosion knocks the criminals down.
Mako cheers on the success of Bolin's attack, which allowed Suyin and Lin to land safely, "Haha, nice job, little bro!"
Lin picks up Aang and travels with her sister back up toward the dome. Ming-Hua traps her leg with water, but Mako blasts fire at her to break her hold and divert her attention. Meanwhile, Zaheer is busy fighting two guards, but looks up and sees Lin escaping with Aang.
"No!" Zaheer flies up on his glider in pursuit of Lin. He blasts air at the chief, but she manages to avoid it. Just as Zaheer is about to reach her, Suyin swings Lin out of the way and metalbends the metal shards that make up her necklace at the glider, piercing its wings, and sending Zaheer spiraling down.
As Zaheer nears the his companions, he folds his gliders and lands safely next to his team using his airbending, "We've failed!"
Zaheer angrily airbends a huge cloud of smoke; when it clears, the lava has cooled, and there is no sign of them.
"Where did they go?" Lin asked.
"They can't be far!" Suyin talls into a walkie-talkie, "Guards, search the entire estate!"
