《Forward In Time》Chapter Twenty-Five

Night falls in Zaofu as the metal panels surrounding the city close. In the dining area, Team Avatar and the Gaang sat with the future Beifongs for dinner.
"Tonight, for your dining pleasure, I present a seared wild Kyoshi elephant koi, paired with a ginger-infused pea tendril and hibiscus root salad." The Chef announced
"Stunning." Suyin said
"And a dish specially made for Avatar Aang. Fried rice with extra vegetables. An Air Nomad specialty."
"Wow thanks! It looks delicious." Aang said with a smile.
The chef bows before walking off, where he bows to Baatar as they cross paths.
"Sorry, dear, I'm going to have to take dinner to my office. I just had a major breakthrough on the train station remodel." Baatar said as Baatar Jr. walked past him with a stack of paperwork.
"Well, don't let me stand in the way of inspiration." Suyin replied
"You're the best!"
"That was my brilliant architect of a husband, Baatar, and our oldest son." Suyin explained to Aang and Korra, "He engineers all my husband's projects."
"Five kids. What a nightmare." Lin said
"No, no. My children are a blessing."
"Yeah, mom used to say that too, but she never meant it." Lin mumbled
Toph tensed up and gripped her fork tightly.
Aang noticed his friend's behavior and decided to change the subject, "This rice is really good. So are the vegetables. Tastes just like how the nomads used to make."
"Yeah, the food is delicious." Sokka agreed, "I remember when all we ate was whatever we could find and Katara could make. Except for the times people would actually give us food, and it wasn't always good. Aang remember that time we went to that place where they tried to execute you for something Kyoshi did but you ended up saving everyone and they gave us dough to eat."

Aang nodded, "That place was really weird."
"Wow. Your guys's life sounds so exciting." Opal said a little envious
"How's your search for the new airbenders going?" Suyin asked
"Honestly, not great. We had to rescue a whole group of them from the Earth Queen." Korra replied
"Oh, she's horrible. She thinks she can just do whatever she wants."
"Sounds familiar." Lin said
"What?"
"Nothing."
"I mean, the idea of even having a queen is so outdated. Don't you agree, Korra?"
"I... I haven't really thought about it too much." Korra replied
"Well, you should start. The world is evolving and the Earth Queen can evolve with it or step aside."
"Hey, everyone. My little sister is an expert on world affairs now." Lin said sarcastically
"You want to talk about what's really bugging you? Because I'm right here!"
Lin glares bitterly at her sister before turning away.
Toph suddenly stood up, "I need some air."
She began walking out as the others watched her. Aang stood up once she left, "I'll go talk to her."
"No it's okay Aang." Sokka said as he stood up, "I'll talk to her."
Aang nodded and sat down as Sokka followed Toph out the door. Then, Varrick and Zhu Li enter the dining hall.
"Sorry we're late, everyone." Varrick said
Bolin gasps excitedly, "Varrick!"
"What are you doing here?" Asami asks
"Great question, Asami. I mean, what are any of us doing here? Wow, food for thought. Any who, how's our company doing?"
"You mean my company. Future Industries reverted back to me after you plotted to abduct the President."
"Allegedly plotted to abduct the President. Never convicted."
"Uh, that's because you escaped prison." Mako said

"No, the universe decided to set me free. So, I looked up my old friend Suyin here, pitched her a few ideas, and bam! We're in business together."
"Varrick's heading up my new technology division." Suyin explained
"I've seen the future, and the future is, magnets!" Varrick said dramatically, "I'm working on a high speed rail that would revolutionize transportation and shipping as we know it. But that's not all, I'm-"
"All right, enough!" Lin says and stands up, "I'm trying to keep both of the Avatars safe and you're harboring a criminal?"
"Ease out, Lin." Suyin replied, "Sure Varrick's made a few mistakes in his past, but that doesn't mean he should pay for it for the rest of his life. My chef was a pirate, but now he's a culinary master. People change."
Lin points her finger accusingly at her sister, "You haven't." She walks off, throwing the chair aside.
"Lin!" Korra calls
Lin exits the hall, firing her cable to slam the door.

Toph walks out of the Zaofu palace and sighs as she continues to walk the grounds. Though she stops when she senses familiar footsteps.
"I'm fine Sokka."
"You don't look fine." Sokka replied with a frown.
"Look, I said I was fine so just leave me alone!"
"You can say that all you want but we both know you're not." Sokka said as he moved to stand in front of her, "What's wrong?"
Toph sighed, "I'm a terrible mother."
Sokka was taken back, "What makes you say that?"
"You've seen how Lin and Suyin are around each other, they fight a lot. And Lin has barely acknowledged me, not to mention some of the things she's said today. I'm going to be a terrible mother."
"Toph listen." Sokka said as he put his hands on her shoulders, "You're not going to be a terrible mother. You know why? Because Lin is the chief of police and Suyin has built her own city and has a family of her own. No parent is perfect, but you and whoever your husband will be clearly raised them well."
Toph smiled as Sokka continued, "You're amazing, beautiful, tough and smart. I know you'll be a great mother."
Before she could stop herself, Toph closed the space between them and pressed her lips against his. Sokka's eyes widened in surprise.
Toph realized what she did and quickly stepped back, "We never talk about this!"
"Uh… y-yeah." Sokka replied with a blush
"I mean it Snoozles! Do not say anything to the others!"
"I won't tell a soul. I promise."
Toph nodded and began walking back inside. Sokka stood there staring at her before heading back inside.

Cutting to Life: an NPC LitRPG (Battle Royale)
Nikola is an NPC in The World of Wills, a video game where players can feel sensations as if they were truly there. She leads a life of bloodshed and murder - that is, until one day she wakes up sapient. Just as she begins thinking real, non-scripted thoughts and making connections, she and the players in the game are told that if they die in the game, they die in real life - and it's time to get killing. But what of Nikola, the emerging AI consciousness? How does she win in a game that can only end in her being wiped from existence at the end of it all? - Updates Mondays and Fridays. Cutting to Life is a slow-burn LitRPG with a villainous (later anti-hero, or maybe still villainous, haha) female lead. It's told from the perspective of Nikola, an NPC within the World of Wills who's become sapient and is now mysteriously able to play the game as a PC. It's quite light for a LitRPG, but the system and stats become more of a focus later when Nikola herself can access them. The story gradually builds into a Battle Royale where the players' lives are on the line (if you die in the game, you die in real life), and only one party of savvy adventurers can win. They'll have to spend their time and stats wisely as dungeons promising rare gear float down from the sky - but is a legendary sword worth killing someone for, knowing they'll stay dead forever? - This story is told in third person, past tense.- This is a slow-burn LitRPG that spends a lot of time establishing its setting and characters, because I believe this will make for a better payoff in the end. As such, the Battle Royale doesn't start until chapter 30 or so.- Chapters are anywhere between 800 words and 3000 words long.- Book cover by Vixeona.Cutting to Life is also being posted on SPB and Scribble Hub.Thank you sincerely for reading.
