BOOK 2: EARTH
CHAPTER 9: BITTER WORK
_
(The episode opens with a view of a rocky canyon. The camera pans down to reveal Aang, Sokka, Katara, and Appa sleeping. Cut to Aang leaping into the air excitedly.)
: Today's the day! Can you believe it? After all that time searching for a teacher, I'm finally starting earthbending!
_
Aang: oh I'm gonna learn earthbending
toph: This is gonna be fun to watch.
Suki: Great! now i get to see how aang became an earthbender
Toph: hahaha.
_
And this place... i-it's perfect! Don't you think, Sokka?
_
Zuko: I think he's asleep.
sokka: no kidding
_
(Sokka rolls over, giving Aang an angry look. He moans.)
: Oh, you're still sleeping, huh?
_
sokka: I sure am and you ruined my sleep.
aang: ha ha sorry.
sokka: as you should
_
(Sokka moans again and rolls back over.)
: (whispering) Sorry!
(The ground begins to shake and Aang takes a step backward. Cut to Toph's rock tent which suddenly explodes, revealing Toph standing with a fist in the air.)
: Good morning, earthbending student!
_
Aang: Good morning.
_
(Cut back to Aang. Toph walks up to him and he bows slightly.)
: Good morning, sifu Toph.
(Katara rouses from her sleeping bag.)
: (sleepily) Hey... you never call me sifu Katara.
_
Toph: too bad.
katara: jokes on you.
_
(Aang scratches behind his head nervously.)
: Well, if you think I should...
(Sokka sits up and grumbles angrily. Cut to Aang and Toph.)
: Sorry, snoozles. We'll do our earthbending as quietly as we can.
_
Zuko: I don't think that's possible.
Toph: nope.
Toph: also That is how the nickname snoozles was made. Right Snoozles.
sokka: yup.....
_
(Cut to Toph's feet. She kicks the ground and cracks travel toward Sokka. Cut to Sokka as a large spire of rock shoots up underneath him. Sokka screams as he's launched into the air and toward the camera. )
(He hits the ground with a thud, then gets up and bounces toward Aang and Toph, grumbling angrily. He bounces offscreen. Cut to Toph. Aang leaps over next to her.)
_
Everyone chuckles except sokka who is rolling is eyes.
Sokka: 🙄 😑😤
_
: So what move are you going to teach me first?
_
zuko: probably move a rock.
_
Rockalanche? (He shoves his fist down to illustrate the move.) The trembler? (He pretends like he's has someone in a hold and trembles slightly.)
Oh! Maybe I can learn to make a whirlpool out of land!
_
suki: aren't those I don't know maybe advanced.
Toph: they are.
_
(He holds his arms up and spins around. Toph slaps a hand on his chest to stop him.)
: Let's start with "move a rock".
(She walks offscreen.)
: Sounds good! Sounds good!
(Cut to an open part of the canyon. Aang and Toph each stand in front of a boulder. Katara watches from a rock outcropping nearby.)
: The key to earthbending is your stance. (She lowers herself and widens the distance between her feet. Aang tries to imitate her.) You've got to be steady and strong. Rock is a stubborn element. (She shoves Aang, causing him to stumble to the side.) If you're going to move it, you've got to be like a rock yourself.
_
suki: that makes a lot sense.
zuko: what happens if you aren't steady like a rock?
toph: you'll see.
_
: Like a rock. Got it.
(He rubs his side where she shoved him. Cut to Toph. She straightens up.)
: Good. Now the actual motion of this one is pretty simple. (She lunges forward and punches, causing the boulder to shoot off into the distance, slamming into the side of the canyon.) Okay, you ready to give it a try?
(Aang takes up a similar stance.)
: I'm ready.
(His eyes narrow and he punches forward, but a blast of air sends him shooting backward. He slams into Appa's side and falls on his face. )
_
toph: that is what Happens.
zuko: oh.
sokka: rock beats airbender
_
(he camera zooms out, showing Sokka, still in his sleeping bag, sitting on a nearby rock.)
: Rock beats airbender!
_
sokka: haha called it.
_
(Cut to Iroh's dream. There's a single tree on a grassy hill. Iroh runs up the hill with Lu Ten behind him. Cut to Lu Ten who does a pretend firebending motion with his hands.)
: (laughs) I got you, dad!
_
zuko eyes widen and says: That's That's Lu ten.
aang: who?
Zuko: Uncle Iroh's son.
all: oh
_
(Cut to Iroh. He lets out a cry of pain as he falls to the ground. Lu Ten falls on top of him and they both laugh.
_
Katara: aw thats cute.
zuko: yeah....
_
Cut to the future. Rain is falling on a stone object. The camera pans up to reveal and older Iroh, a look of pain on his face.)
_
Aang: what happened?
zuko puts his head down.
_
: My beloved Lu Ten, I will see you again.
_
Everyone but Zuko: 😧😧😧
Sokka: didn't iroh mentioned his son's death in the last episode of Book 1 like when zuko was gonna leave to "capture the avatar" (he tried to imamate zuko's voice)
Zuko: yeah....he did.....
_
(The camera zooms out, revealing that he is on the same hill, presumably in front of a grave. The tree is leafless and the sky is a gloomy dark red color.)
_
everyone: 😢 😢 😢 😢 😢 😢
_
: Uncle!
_
suki: aw that was his dream.
zuko: yeah..... i guess so.
_
(Cut to a deserted, broken-down shack. The camera is from Iroh's viewpoint and Zuko is looking down at him, a concerned look on his face.)
: You were unconscious. Azula did this to you.
(Iroh attempts to get up but winces in pain. A bandage covers the left side of his chest and shoulder.)
: It was a surprise attack.
: Somehow, that's not so surprising.
_
they all chuckle.
Katara: nope.
_
(He grunts in pain as he moves to lean up against the wall. Zuko picks up a steaming cup and hands it to Iroh.)
: I hope I made it the way you like it.
(Iroh takes a sip from the cup and his eyes widen. He lets out a cry of disgust, but manages to mask it.)
everyone but zuko chuckles.
zuko: at least I tired.
_
: Mmm, good. (He takes another drink and grunts.) That was very, uhh... bracing!
(Zuko hands him another cup and he tosses itout the window when his nephew isn't looking.)
suki: oh my gosh.
sokka: he just threw it out the window
they all chuckle.
zuko: i guess it was that bad.
_
: So uncle, I've been thinking. It's only a matter of time before I run into Azula again. I'm going to need to know more advanced firebending if I want to stand a chance against her. I know what you're going to say: she's my sister and I should be trying to get along with her.
: No, she's crazy and she needs to go down. (Zuko nods. Iroh grunts as he stands up.) It's time to resume your training.
_
they all chuckle.
Sokka: that was not the response I expected.
zuko: same.
_
(Zuko nods. Iroh grunts as he stands up.) It's time to resume your training.
(Cut to Aang's group. Katara and Toph are standing next to the boulder Aang tried to move. Aang walks up, a hand behind his head.)
: I don't understand what went wrong. (She glances at Toph and points at Aang.) He did it exactly the way you did.
_
suki: maybe that's not enough. To do it just like how toph did it.
_
: Maybe there's another way. (He takes up a fighting stance and begins to walk toward the boulder.) What if I came at the boulder from a different angle?
(Toph grabs him by the collar and he turns around.)
: No, that's the problem. You've got to stop thinking like an airbender. (She knocks her fist lightly against the side of Aang's head. He winces slightly.) There's no different angle, no clever solution, no trickity trick that's going to move that rock. (She shoves Aang. He cries out and falls down offscreen.) You've got to face it head on. And when I say head on, I mean like this!
(She runs forward. The camera pans out as she jumps into the air and crashes into the rock that Aang tried to move head-first, shattering it. Aang recoils.)
All: woah!
Zuko: does that hurt?
toph: nope.
_
: Whoa!
(He looks down, unsure of himself. Cut to Toph walking away. Katara runs to catch up with her. Toph stops.)
: I've been training Aang for a while now. He really responds well to a positive teaching experience. Lots of encouragement and praise. Kind words. If he's doing something wrong, maybe a gentle nudge in the right direction.
: Thanks, Katara. A gentle nudge. I'll try that. (Cut to Toph shouting.) Keep your knees high, twinkletoes!
_
they all laugh.
Suki: that was defiantly not a "gentle nudge"
katara: certainly not.
_
(Cut to Aang carrying a large rock on his back. )
_
suki: how are you able to carry that?
aang: I don't know. I just carry it.
_
He's obviously straining to hold up the weight. The camera zooms out, showing Toph in the background stomping down and causing pillars of rock to rise underneath Aang's feet as he walks. Aang loses his balance and falls offscreen.
Cut to Toph rubbing her hands together. The camera zooms out and she begins to quickly shove her hands effortlessly into a rock. The camera pans over and Aang rubs his hands together and tries to do the same thing, but he merely hurts his hand and grunts in pain.
_
they all chuckle.
sokka: ouch.
Aang: yeah it hurt alot.
Suki: toph did it so effortlessly .
Aang: of course she did she's toph.
Toph: yeah I'm the greatest earthbender in the world.
suki: yes I know.
_
Cut to Aang. A bead of sweat drips down his face. The camera zooms out and Toph leaps out of the ground and lands next to him.)
: Rocklike!
_
sokka: well that's not rocklike.
Toph: no kidding
_
(Aang falls over and blinks. Toph kicks the ground and a pillar of rock shoves him back up. She pokes him in the eye and Aang grins nervously.
(Cut to Sokka's face with Toph's hand holding him back. He grunts, trying to move forward. Cut to a side view, showing Sokka struggling to get his back sword from Toph, who is holding it to the side and preventing Sokka from grabbing it.)
_
Sokka: what were you gonna do with that anyway?
toph: Train
_
( She shoves him backward and he stalks offscreen. She hands the weapon to Aang, who is blindfolded. She stands on a rock in the distance and begins to kick the ground, causing columns of rock to emerge. Aang tries to hit them and finally succeeds after missing four. Cut to Toph, who nods in approval.)
_
sokka: oh. WHY DID YOU DO THAT WITH IT? WHAT If IT GOT DAMAGED?!
Toph: it didn't did it.
Sokka: ...... well no
Toph: see.
_
(Cut to Toph and Aang standing in a clearing. Toph raises her arms and two walls of rock rise on either side of them. Aang looks up in amazement. Cut to Toph.)
( She moves her fingers in a straight line in front of her and a line is drawn in the ground at her feet. She holds up her fists and rocks shoot toward her, covering her entire body except for her eyes in rock armor.)
_
Katara: not to be rude toph but why did you put eye holes for your eyes?
toph: I don't know I put it.
_
Cut to Aang, who gasps in surprise. Cut to Toph's feet. She begins to slide forward. Cut to Aang. He extends his arms to stop her and slowly begins to push her back. He begins to lose ground, but finally pushes her past the line she drew in the ground.
_
sokka: GO AANG!
_
Cut to Aang, who is tossing a rock with a handle on it into the air and catching it. The camera zooms out, showing that he's standing on two tall pillars of rock. Toph stands at the base. She walks between the pillars, stomps down, and then hits the columns with her hands, causing tremors to go up them.)
: Rocklike!
(Aang doesn't budge, a look of determination on his face. Toph rises on her own pillar of rock and nods in approval. Aang gives her a huge grin.
_
Suki: yay you did it!
Aang:😁😁😁

But when an object of great and malevolent power promises to make good on all the promises the mages broke to him Mar is thrust into the world of magic. Mar will find that fate had something more than a life confined to the library planned for him after all. Authors Notes: I consider this to be a comming-of-age Sword and Sorcery story based mostly on the style of classic western fantasies. So if that's your thing then I encourage you to take a peek. Something I want to mention though is that the main character starts of pretty wimpy, and that might not be your thing. That being said, if you stick with him he's got a long way to grow. Also, while this version of the story is meant to be fully readable, more dicerning readers may want to wait until I move out of rough draft phase. There may be some inconsistancies with character and plot while I am still in the rough draft phase. I'm sorry for this, but this is my first web novel and from what I've read the best way to get a good novel out is to write write write, and then edit ruthlessly after you're finished with the book, so that's the plan I'm going to follow. Again, this is a rough draft. Everything you are reading is subject to change, including the name, title, and cover photo. This may no longer be the case once I've decided I know where this fiction is going and I have a reasonable understanding of the characters and their behavior. You're reading what comes off my keyboard as it's made, with very limited editing. There will be mistakes in the text. I do a quick spell check to take out the worst of the errors, but there will be some I miss. You can point them out in the comments if they are particularly confusing or glaring and I will try to fix them, however I am not overly concerned about minor errors as this is not the final draft by any means.

No destiny, no choice, no hope. Our protagonist, a coward summoned to a world meant for heroes; a new world with new rules and old cruelties. Join him on his adventures as he must deal with menus, monsters, and mysteries in this litrpg fantasy. Thomas Goodwill was an average boy with an average life, all that changed when he woke up in a new reality. Now, out of his depth, damn near out of his mind, he must learn to survive in a game-like reality with no reloads, checkpoints, or save scumming. He does, however, have a drunk snake. Thank you for reading my first story, hopefully, the first of many to come. This will be my main story and is meant to help me practice and hone my skills as I slowly produce more complex ideas. It's a litrpg in which I want to only lightly focus on the mechanics as I don’t want to pad out the word count with math and number tables and while I want to add a few of my own twists here and there, overall I’m going to keep this story close to generic as possible so that I don't let my inexperience lead me into a corner. Thanks again to all willing to leave a review or some constructive criticism, without you I'd never improve. Unfortunately, Cover art is by me.

Moonblood
Five moons rise over Evanir, each in her own cycle, and each moon is also a god, one of five sisters. Many gods create spirit attendants and companions, brought forth fully-formed. Long ago, the moons worked together to create a lineage that are, instead, humans transformed by the mingling of blood. They intended them to be long-lived and to draw their strength directly from the light of the moon who chose each individual. The five sisters had different goals in mind – one wanted it to be a blessing for scholars and artists, to give them more time and fewer physical distractions; another wanted them to have an animal form, different for each, to keep them more in tune with nature so they could serve as guardians of the wilderness. There are drawbacks to their children having human lives and personalities before being chosen: not all share the goals of their divine mothers, and some choose to put their gifts to darker uses. Those carrying the blood of one woman, fleeing the corruption in search of a quiet life, take a different path. -=-=-=-=- Moonblood isn't so much a novel as a series of adventures of varying length. They involve a core group of people, which does grow over time. They take place in a fairly low-magic world, but despite that, our core cast are directly connected to the moons and have various abilities, including limited shapeshifting to a single individual animal form. As with all my work, unless gender, orientation, or other aspects of sexuality are explicitly stated, I suggest not making assumptions. Probably most significant, I think, is a major trans character who appears about 80K words in - no spoilers, just a note for those who care about that one way or the other.
