《Rather Ruthless》Chapter Three

Kaia paced her apartment, confused; the business card nestled in her palm. She had wanted to call him but after the warning Aunt Candace has given her, she was at a loss. She had always listened to her aunt, especially after her parents had died when she had been sixteen and her aunt had taken her in, but now she wanted so much to disobey. She didn't know what to do.

Obey her aunt and regret not calling Trystan for the rest of her life or disobey her aunt and regret disappointing her, and not forgetting the possible 'consequences' that were involved. Her aunt had been adamant about her staying as far away from Trystan as she could.

She wondered what about Trystan made her aunt dislike him so much. Surely, he wasn't as bad as her aunt thought he was.

There was also the event this morning that had made her aunt so tense. What had they been discussing?

Her aunt was not going to tell her what happened but Kaia was going to find. So that meant she was calling Trystan? No, right?

What was she even doing? She couldn't disobey Aunt Candace.

But she was an adult, why was Aunt Candace still treating her like a little girl.

Urgh, she was so confused? To call or to call him not? That was the question.

She laughed at her train of thought before sobering up at the realization that she had to make a decision.

Make a choice now, Kaia. Make a choice you won't regret.

Actually, any choice she made would result in some form of regret. She just didn't want to end up making the choice with the most regret attached to it.

Trystan stared at his cell phone, willing it to ring. When he had said, he would be waiting, he hadn't meant it literally. But here he was. Waiting like a fool for her to call.

He wasn't known for that. In fact, he was known for never caring about anyone else. He was ruthless, cold-hearted and mean. That was who he was. Yet, this girl had him twisted in knots. Those eyes, that skin, that body.

He groaned and slammed his fists on his desk. Damn her! Why did she affect him so badly?

He heard a ringing sound. Disappointment coursed through him when he realized it was the office phone. He answered it gruffly.

"What is it?!"

"It's Garrett, sir. We have him right where we want him." His employee informed throught the phone. Trystan smiled coldly. At least something was going right.

"I want his company destroyed." Trystan ordered.

"But sir, I thought you wanted it?"

"That was an order, Garrett. Get it done." Trystan hanged up and leaned back. Destroying someone's life definitely lifted his mood.

His eyes suddenly drifted to the file on his desk. He picked it up and opened it.

He took out the picture and stared at it. He had been too busy focusing on everything to notice the picture before.

The picture didn't even do justice to her beauty. She was looking at the camera with wide, smiling eyes. Her mouth was lifted just slightly. She was at the park, holding a book in her hands.

He wondered who had taken the picture. The thought of another man being bestowed with that look made him clench his fists.

He stood up abruptly and left the office. He made his way to the parking lot and chose to drive one of the newer ones. He drove like a madman to her house.

If she wasn't going to call him, then he would take matters into his own hands.

He parked a few feet away from her apartment building and continued his journey, walking. He took the elevator to her apartment.

As he stood outside, he thought of what to say. How to explain that he. . .what? He had been jealous with the thought of another man being with her. A man he wasn't even sure existed.

This was what he was reduced to. Despicable. He turned to leave, disgusted with himself, when his cell phone rang. He picked it up and answered coldly.

"Hi." The hesitant voice came through his phone. He stopped. She called him. She called him.

"Hi." He said back, a smile finding its way to his lips.

"I called."

"Yes, you did."

"I don't know why I did. Just like I don't know why I went outside the café to look for you." Her voice showed her uncentainty.

"Open your door, Kaia." Her name rolled off his tongue smoothly. She gasped.

"You're outside?" She asked, and he heard her scrambling around. He heard movement behind the door. He turned around as she unlocked it and swung it open. "You're here." She said into the phone. He ended the call and moved closer to her.

"I wasn't sure you would call. And I'm not a very patient man." He admitted. She stared at him for a few more seconds before she stepped aside to allow him in. He stepped into her apartment and walked into the living room as she locked the door, locking herself with him.
