Legosi plopped down on the seat behind the counter while he was free, not busy with the customers. He adjusted the glasses on his snout and glanced at the clock on the wall.
12:10 PM
He fished out his phone out of his pocket and searched for Louis's contact on BeastLINE. He was ecstatic when the deer gave him his number on their last date, now they could talk to each other whenever they wanted.
Legosi : Hey Louis, are you coming today?
Louis : Legosi
Louis : You ask me that
Louis : Every
Louis : Single
Louis : Day
Legosi : Sorry, I just wanted to know.
Louis : And it's going to be the same answer every time you big dope
Louis : Of course I'm coming
Louis : I like being with you :)
Legosi : OK.
Louis : What?
Legosi : What?
Louis : Just OK?
Louis : No "I like being with you too"?
Louis : I feel betrayed
Legosi : Sorry! I like being with you too, Louis. I really do.
Louis : It doesn't feel genuine now
Legosi : Then what do you want me to do?
Louis : Love me!
Legosi : I do!
Louis : Well I don't feel it >:(
Legosi groaned as he exited BeastLINE, he really needed to improve his texting skills soon if he wanted to convey his feelings better through it. He dialed Louis's number and put the phone next to his ear.
*Ring* *Ring*
Louis's voice boomed through the phone, sounding a little annoyed, "What?"
"I like being with you too okay! I was happy when you said that. It's always fun with you, I always look forward to meeting you here everyday, to make you your black coffee. And-"
"W-woah woah woah Legosi, calm done," Louis interjected. "Sorry.. I was just joking before, I know that you meant it." his voice was soft now.
"Oh"
"And... thanks. It makes me happy to hear that," Louis smiled from behind the phone. "Sorry but I'm quite busy right now, so see you later Legosi. I can't wait."
a small smile appeared on Legosi's face as well, he nodded despite the fact that the deer couldn't see him at all, "I can't wait either."
-----//
"Thank you, please come again Sebun-san."
"Sure will," The short sheep said with a cheerful smile. "You know.. you've been a lot more cheerful recently Legosi-kun."
"O-oh, I have?"
Sebun nodded, "Mmhmm, it's nice. Something good must have happened huh?"
"I-I guess you can say that.." Legosi rubbed his nape, bashful.
Sebun waved goodbye to Legosi and headed to the exit, "Well I've gotta go, goodbye for now Legosi-kun!"
*Kring*
"Oh!" Sebun stopped midway, she looked like she almost bumped into someone. "Sorry, excuse me."
"No it's fine, go ahead."
"Thank you." Sebun bowed down her head and walked out.
Legosi's ears perked up, he recognized that voice. His tail behind him started to wag like every other he met this animal, "Louis!"
"You don't have to shout everytime I come here you know." Louis entered the cafe and closed the door behind him.
Legosi's nose twitched, he smelled something sweet. His eyes darted to where it was, which was the deer's hand. Louis was holding a small bag, on it were a grinning rabbit's face and the words "Haru's Sweet Shack".
"Isn't that from the bakery near here?" Legosi pointed at the bag.
"Oh, this?" Louis lifted the bag up. "Yeah, I go there sometimes. Their baked goods are delicious."

Louis walked over and sat on one of the barstools. He put the bag down gently on the counter, "I thought maybe we could eat some together."
"You bought some for me? but I heard their stuff is expensive."
Louis sighed, "Just accept it you dumb wolf. I didn't buy it for you just so you can complain about how expensive it is."
Legosi dropped his head, "Sorry.." he looked back up shortly after with a small smile, "And thanks."
"My pleasure," Louis opened the small bag, revealing 2 elegant small shortcakes. Each topped with cream and a strawberry.
Legosi's tail wagged idly as he eyed the cakes. His right hand reached out to grab one of it.
"Wait, can you eat right now? You're still open right?" Louis asked.
"Oh don't worry, just look around you."
Louis turned on his stool, "Huh." There were no other animals there except the deer and the wolf themselves.
"I usually don't have many customers around this time," said Legosi.
"I can see that," Louis turned back around, now facing the wolf again. "Then let's eat."
Both of them grabbed one of the cakes from the bag.
"It looks so small when you're holding it," said Louis.
Legosi chuckled softly, "Heh. Yeah, it does." He brought up the cake to his mouth and took a tiny bite to taste test.
His face lit up, his tail wagged harder behind him as he shut his eyes, savoring all of the sweet and velvety goodness that was happening in his mouth.
"Ooo, it's so sweet~" Legosi mumbled before shoving more of the cake into his mouth.
Louis quietly enjoyed the sight of the wolf wolfing down(hehe) the shortcake while eating his own. Maybe it would be a good idea to bring more of these sweets if it meant he could see more expressions like these from the wolf.
Legosi finished the cake within seconds. He licked his fingers and lips for leftovers.
Louis's lips turned into a smile at the sight, "You missed a spot."
Legosi tilted his head, "Where?" His tongue darted around his lips again, trying to search the spot Louis had mentioned.
Louis leaned forward, reaching out one of his hands to the wolf's cheek, "Here." He wiped off the cream on his cheek gently with his fingers. He pulled his hand back to his lips and licked the cream off, "Mm~"
Legosi's face became as red as a beetroot.
Louis chuckled, "You're just too adorable."
The wolf's face reddened even further, "Stop iiit."
"Never, it's your fault that you're this cute."
"You're evil."
"Thank you," Louis took the last bite of his own cake.
Louis looked down at the counter, searching for his cup, "Oh, I think I forgot to order first when I came in."
Legosi looked down as well, "Oh. Here, I'll make it real quick. The usual right?"
"Mmhmm," Louis hummed.
Legosi turned around and got to work immediately. His mind wandered while he brewed Louis's usual black coffee. For all the time they've spent with each other, he doesn't really know much about the deer. He knew from what he had seen that Louis was rich, incredibly rich. And that he's currently studying in college. But that's about it. Maybe he could-
*Ring* *Ring*
"Oh," The deer pulled out his phone and answered it. "Hello?"

"Yes.. yes.."
Legosi finished the coffee and placed the cup in front of the deer gently.
Louis was still busy on the phone, but he managed to mouth a 'Thank you' and a smile before he continued his talk on his phone for another minute.
"I know, alright. Goodbye," He hung up and put the phone face-up on the counter. "Sorry about that."
"No it's..fine.." Legosi's eyes glanced down to Louis's phone. "Is that me sleeping as your background?"
Louis's hand was almost as fast lightning when it snatched the phone from the counter, "Nope, it's not. Definitely not the case."
"It looked like I was in your car.." Legosi rubbed his chin.
"Stop it."
"Oh! Was it taken during our trip to the cinema?"
"No."
Legosi smirked, "So you like seeing my face so much you took a photo of me secretly and kept it as your background?"
Louis crossed his arms on the counter and hid his face inside it. He groaned, "Uggghh, of course you had to found out."
"Oh it's fine~ I think it's cute that you did that." Legosi said, still smirking.
"..." Louis' face flushed. He buried himself further under his arms.
Legosi giggled. He rarely got any chances to tease the deer like this, but he didn't want to push it too much, "Alright, alright. Sorry for teasing you Louis."
Louis lifted himself up from his arms, his face still a little bit red, "You better be."
The teasing ceased and the two spent the rest of their time talking with each other like normal.
"By the way.. who was that that called you?"
"Oh. It was Oguma," Louis's answer was curt.
Legosi cocked his head, "Oguma? That sounds familiar.." He closed his eyes, trying to recall any instances of hearing or seeing that name. "Oh! I remember seeing it in the newspapers.. Isn't he a CEO of something big? You know someone like that?"
Louis nodded, "The CEO of the Horns Conglomerate. He's.. my dad. Sort of."
"I-isn't that one of the biggest companies here?! And he's your dad?!"
Louis nodded again before sipping his coffee.
"No wonder you're able to afford so much stuff.." Legosi mumbled to himself.
Louis stared at his own reflection in the coffee, "And.. I'm planned to be the next CEO by him."
"..I see."
Louis gulped the rest of his drink, "He wanted us to meet soon. That's why he called."
Legosi's ears and tails drooped after hearing the news, "Does that mean you're leaving..?"
"Sadly, yes. But.." Louis leaned forward on the counter and gave a peck on Legosi's cheek. "We can always meet again tomorrow."
The previous redness came back to Legosi's face. His tail wagged left and right excitedly behind him. His eyes met Louis's gaze, "Only on the cheeks?"
Louis gave a small chuckle, "Such a greedy wolf."
"Oh shut up, you want it too," Legosi scoffed.
"I do." The deer leaned forward again, closing the gap between their mouths.
Legosi melted into the kiss. He was ready unlike the first time they did it, but it still hit him harder than he anticipated. The kiss was quick and chaste, far from being intense. Yet Legosi still felt like turning into mush from it.
Louis pulled away, smirking, "Jeez, look at you. All that just from a small kiss?"
Legosi's face was all hot and flustered, the glasses on his snout off balanced to the side.
The wolf managed a small grin, "Maybe you're just too good Louis."
"It was just a peck Legosi, I didn't get to use my skill yet," Louis huffed.
Louis hopped off his stool, "Well you got what you wanted." Louis waved as he went to the exit, "See you again you big dope."
Legosi waved back while rebalancing his glasses with his other hand, "See you tomorrow Louis."

"What do you think you're doing?" Oguma asked from behind his desk.
"Huh?" Louis looked up to Oguma from his seat across the desk.
"You've been performing worse at school recently." Oguma's squinted stare felt like it could pierce through anything.
"I can fix that easily."
"You will."
The room fell silent.
"Is that all-"
"You're also spending much more of my money than usual. In odd places I might add."
Louis clenched his fist on his knees, sweat rolled down his face.
"Cinemas, bakeries, and an amusement park? it's rare for you to be spending a lot of time and money in places like these. You always bought things for 2 animals from these places too."
Louis's brows furrowed, "And? I don't see any problem."
"And I noticed that you seem cheerier, much cheerier than usual."
Louis scoffed, "What? You're not happy that your.. son is happy?"
A small smile tugged at Oguma's lips very briefly, "Of course I am."
Louis was taken aback, "H-huh?" Did his father just smile?
The frown came back to Oguma's face quickly, "But you're in a relationship aren't you?"
"..." Louis gulped.
"You've been spending my money every day at this one particular cafe. And after you started going there, your attitude seems to have changed.."
Louis's eyes darted downward to the floor, avoiding the other deer's gaze.
"I'll take that as confirmation that I was correct," Oguma adjusted his glasses. "How about we invite her for our next monthly dinner this friday?"
"W-What?" Louis stuttered. Legosi was a wolf, a carnivore, a male carnivore. Would his father accept that he's in a relationship with someone like that?
"All the other engagements I've set up for you have failed, so might as well find out what made this one work."
You know what? screw it. If his father wanted to find out about his relationship then he will. Maybe this would stop him trying to find a suitor for him, "Alright, fine. I'll invite them then."
"Good."
Louis stood up, "Is that all you wanted to talk about?"
Oguma's eyes went up to meet Louis's, "There's nothing else, you can go now." He emphasized by turning to his computer on his desk, continuing his work.
Louis nodded and headed toward the exit. But before he opened the door, he turned around one last time, "It's nice that you're finally interested in my personal life after so many years of not doing so."
'You dumbass,' Louis's thoughts echoed through his head, 'that was uncalled for.'
Oguma's glanced away from the computer screen to Louis, "You might not be my real son, but that doesn't mean I don't care or am not interested."
Louis's head lowered, his gaze now on the floor, "Right.. not your real son."
This time thoughts echoed in Oguma's head, 'I shouldn't have said that.'
Louis sighed deeply, "Well, goodbye then.. father." He hissed his last words and exited the office.

Cinder Roots (Undergoing a Rewrite)
This novel is currently undergoing a major rewrite, as I noticed several plot points that needed to be revamped. I'll leave the chapters I've posted here to anyone curious to see how everything started, but I'll be posting the rewritten story as a new novel in the future. The characters will be the same, but the journey will be more understandable and hopefully, a lot more fun to read. -------- First, everything was fire, it killed, it consumed, and it gave him life. He was just a tree, born in the biggest forest that remained in the world, full of dryads, naiads, elves and treants, but he was alone. He couldn’t see. He couldn’t talk. Curiosity plagued him. He dreamed of wandering the land, but could only wonder what stood outside the reach of his roots. The tree was tired of waiting. He decided to not just dream, but to act. How could he survive against a invading empire, a grand conspiracy that threatened to shake the foundations of the world, and the raw danger that lies within these woods? With pure determination. Warning - There are quite a few POV changes in the first chapters, but that'll change after the introduction is done, as I'll be focusing on the MC perspective only.
