Anya is bored and lonely. Her friends have gone away to summer camp and she is left alone in her tiny forest village. Gabriel may suspect more about her than she knows about herself, but he isn't telling her. Why not? This story is set in a parallel universe with less advanced technology than our own, in a forest that is meant to resemble old rural Saxony. Notice the way Anya talks, she sometimes addresses people as "Dear (insert their name)" Other slang will be explained at the end of each chapter.
