《The Unknown》Consequences

Mike's pov
I knock once and open the door. The girls are sitting quietly on their respective beds nervously awaiting my arrival.
"The three of you are going to be punished for being up after lights out, and Julie and Stacey you're also going to be punished for lying to Rick." I get right down to it, as I'm in no mood to prolong this. I pull out the desk chair and set it down in the middle of the room. Knowing what's coming, Julie and Stacey start to tear up. Lisa, however, looks both confused and scared, unaware she's about to receive her first spanking.
"Stacey, Lisa, wait in the bathroom. Julie, get over my knee."
Lisa seems paralyzed by fear, so Stacey grabs her hand and pulls her into the bathroom. Julie reluctantly walks over, head hanging down, staring at the floor.
"NOW!" I say.
She quickly complies, lying across my lap.
Before I raise my left hand up, I say, "You're getting ten for violating lights out and another twenty for lying."
Hearing these numbers, Julie starts to cry. The first ten I deliver quickly without pausing, so I don't lose my nerve. I hate hearing her cry, especially knowing I'm the reason why, but they have to learn there are consequences for their actions.
"These next twenty are for lying. Your punishment would already be over if you hadn't lied to Rick by telling him you had my permission to be in the common room. Do you understand?"
"Yes," she chokes out, sniffling from crying.
I give her a sharp smack on the bottom.
"Yes what?"
"Yes sir," she answers.
I know this may seem extreme, expecting a six-year-old to respond with sir, but Neil taught me not to underestimate kids' capabilities at this age. To me, this means demanding respect early, like by the way they address adults and by not dumbing down my vocabulary when speaking to them. As a military brat, I think my first words were sir and ma'am, not Dada and Mama.

I spank her hard ten more times, wanting to emphasize harsher consequences for dishonesty. These last ten are really going to drive that lesson home. I pause between each one for effect. From experience, I know that waiting for the next swat can almost be worse than actually receiving it. Almost. The last three I deliver are the harshest. I want her to remember these tomorrow, every time she sits down.
I stand her up in front of me.
"What do you have to say to me?"
"I'm sorry," she mumbles, not taking her eyes off the floor.
"Look at me when you're speaking," I say sternly.
Julie lifts her eyes to meet mine.
"I'm sorry."
"For?" I prompt her.
"For staying up late and lying," she sniffles between words, still crying.
"I know," I say quietly, pulling her close and kissing the top of her head. "Now go wait in the bathroom with Lisa and send Stacey out."
I sigh audibly. Shit, I say to myself. I still have two more to go. Stacey receives exactly the same punishment as Julie. Now it's Lisa's turn.

The Arcanist Seer
An eye of which sees everything beyond the skies and heavens saw an embodying fate with reek of blood and greed. He who sees the future and yet is restrained by his own shackles of his destiny. An eye that serves a purpose but nothing in exchange for his freedom. Will he remain as a tool of his adversary or escape from his own shackles of fate? This is a story of two old men trying to free from the shackle of their destiny set in a future only to await their impending doom. This is a story of a dead god, and of a storyteller, trying to break from the bonds of the past. And as their stories go, one of them will face the events that unfold in their distant past, as the other one will unveil its mystery predicted by its future. Is it a mistake to challenge fate, after all? *** The world-building is set upon on the universal scale, with dungeon and old-style fantasy. It has a progression that follows with the consistency of a dungeon setting, although it's not what you call a dungeon, but a function of a crystal. There's a lot to take in this novel, but that's all within my intention. I have always enjoyed challenging conventional ideas. The cover is not mine, it's just temporary.

Leave Bad Enough Alone
Something has been amiss in the city’s theaters as of late. The local bards have long done a respectable job of keeping the audiences entertained, weaving high concepts with skillful performances. But lately, a new set of bards, and their illusionist cohorts, have captured the crowd’s attention. Compared to the theater’s usual fare, their work is hackneyed and poorly plotted, with unskilled acting, bad special effects, and unsatisfying resolutions. Worst of all, the audiences like their work more, and these upstarts are far more profitable than the city’s decent bards! Clearly, there must be some dark secret behind the success of these newcomers, and it’s up to the city’s true artists to find out what it is and expose the conspiracy! Or maybe the city’s bards have just become too hopelessly pretentious and derivative. It’s hard to tell. But investigate it they must! Failure is not an option! Victory, or...well, they’ll have to get day jobs or something. Original cover image generated by NightCafé.Master story list here.

The Swarm
Anthony had been looking forward to playing the hottest new virtual reality game. When he put the VR helmet on he was met with a prompt asking him if he wanted to take a test to become a swarm knight. Thinking that this was one of the classes in the game he accepted. Instead of finding himself in the game, Anthony found that he was transported to a different planet. A planet where he would learn the greater truth of the universe. Everything was based on magic in the universe. Except that magic was based on nanorobots, called the swarm, that had been created through highly advanced technology. Genetics determined the access level and the amount of control that someone could wield over the swarm, and therefore their status in this society. Long ago Earth had been cutoff from the swarm. Now that it had been rediscovered, Earth would be reintegrated into the swarm. Unfortunately when that happened all the current technology on Earth would fail and be replaced with the ability to use magic. In effect, it would be the system apocalypse. As someone able to control the swarm, Anthony found himself in the unique position to influence how Earth was reintegrated into the swarm. Perhaps he could change things enough to save most of the people on Earth. But first he would have to learn how to control the swarm and become one of the leaders in the society he found himself in. Warning: If this fiction was a movie I'd rate it somewhere between PG-13 and R for occasional scenes of violence, gore, and nudity.
