《Daddy Unknown》Chapter 31

"Can we have a word?" She said finally, her voice barely audible.

Harry quickly glanced at the kitchen door. "Yes, m'am."

Emelia was silent for a few seconds, watching him with squinted eyes, and the anticipation was killing him. He was holding his breath, his entire body stiffening, waiting for what she wanted to say. Even though he already suspected what, all he needed now was conformation. The game she played was a dangerous one, and he wasn't about to participate. Grabbing a bunch of cards and putting them on the table was probably a safer option.

"Are you planning on telling her?"

That confirmed it. She knew. Fuck, she knew.

At that moment, Harraël was close to hitting himself. It was a damn miracle that Moira hadn't found out who her son's daddy is, now that his hair was growing longer and he started resembling Harry more and more. It was naive of him to assume everybody was the same level of oblivious as Moira. Her mother appeared to be a rather observant woman. Correction: definitely observant.

"Yes, m'am." He nodded stiffly, his anxiety level rising. Because what if she decided to tell Moira? He'd be dead -in a matter of speaking.

"Soon?"

"Yes, m'am."

"Does your vocabulary include more than just 'yes m'am'?"

"Yes m'-" he abrubtly stopped himself.

Within seconds, her face morphed into one of complete amusement. And it was only then that he noticed how much Moira really did look like her mother, they had the same smile. "Do I make you nervous?" She asked, a small giggle escaping her mouth -which also sounded a lot like Moira's.

"You do a little." He admitted sheepishly.

Emelia pat him on the shoulder. "Oh silly boy, there's no reason for you to be nervous, not because of me anyway. When you tell my daughter, however..." she trailed off.

"Wait, so you're not going to tell her?" He questioned incredulously, relief washing over him in tidal waves and the previous fears completely vanishing.

"It's none of my business." She stated, shrugging.

"Wow.. I-uhh thanks?"

"Don't thank me, dear! I'm just glad my baby girl has finally found someone to take care of her, and that Ollie has a dad. His real dad." She smiled. "Now come here and give your future mother-in-law a hug!"

Touched by Emelia's sincerity and kind intentions, he laughed, wrapping her in a warm hug. It felt very loving and well.. nice. It reminded him of his own mum, who had yet to meet his 'girlfriend' and son.

"Welcome to the family." She murmured, causing Harry to peck her cheek in reply.

"Am I interrupting something?" Moira asked, as she returned with their tea. She grinned cheekily, as if amused by the sight of them. "Were you using your charms again, mom?"

"Oh, you know me!" Her mother exclaimed, taking one of the steaming mugs from the tray.

Harraël was beyond relieved she'd come back after their talk, shit would've gone down if she'd walked in in the middle of it. But for once, the odd seemed to be in his favour. Moira and Harry sat next to each other on the couch, while Emelia opted to give the love birds some space and sit in one of the recliners.

"But really, what were you hugging about?"

Emelia took a long sip from her tea before answering, "I was just thanking him."

"For what?"

Noticing that Harry's eyes would continue travelling towards her daughter, Emelia shook her head and mischievously grinned. "Making you happy. Right Harraël?"

"I-uhh yeah," he spoke, sounding distracted as his eyes scrutinized Moira's physique, "yes yes."

She gave out a little laugh as Moira's cheeks flushed, and her daughter tore her gaze away from her. Her reaction made Harry's bubble -pop, and he let out a dry laugh of his own. He pulled her to his side, his arm wrapping securely around her waist.

"You make me the happiest man in the world." He quietly whispered, in a way that made her believe there was more to his words than 'happiness' alone. He placed a gentle, tender kiss to her temple. It instantly warmed up her stomach but also managed to make her cheeks burn even redder.

"Have you already had dinner, mom?" Moira asked, in a weak attempt of distracting herself.

"Yes darling, thank you. I was just hopping by to see how you were doing." She smiled. "Is Ollie asleep?"

"I tucked him in at 7."

"That's too bad, but I'll see him in a few days."

They sat in a comfortable silence, each of them sipping and enjoying their tea until Emelia glanced at the watch on her wrist. Clearing her throat, she placed her mug back on the coffee table. "It's about time I go back home." She announced.

"You can stay the night, if you want? It's late."

"Thank you but no thank you." She declined the offer with a shake of her head. "Wouldn't want the noise at night to keep me awake." Emelia winked at her daughter.

Instantly realising what she was referring to, Moira blushed once again. This time, Harry joined her with a face equally as flushed as hers. And even when Emelia had said her goodbyes and long gone, the redness remained. It awakened certain emotions, fired them up.

"So," Harry broke the silence. "What do you wanna do, girlfriend."

The word 'girlfriend' moved through her, replaying over and over again until she was grinning like an idiot. It was a mutual agreement. She guessed they really were together-together now. And the fact that he'd picked her, of all people, to be his set her heart on fire.

Moira sighed in content. She could get used to this.

"Yeah, me too." He murmured, brushing a stray hair behind her ear.

Her eyes widened, not realizing she'd said it out loud. "Err.. let's watch some TV."

Grabbing the remote from the coffee table, she pushed the on-button and aimlessly began watching the screen -fully aware of the emerald eyes glued to her face. He shifted closer to her and casually laid a hand on her thigh, his lips close to the space beneath her ear.

"You know," he almost-whispered, and it was kind of inevitable to sense a smile on his lips. His thumb touched the inseam of her jeans and could feel how he hesitated to move it, and for that she was grateful, even though her eyes were still widened. "I'd much rather do something else that watch television."

"Good for you, boyfriend." She grumbled the last part under her breath.

She didn't expect him to hear it, but he did. It was then that he cracked a smile. That real million dollar grin of his. The one she had grown to love so much over the past months. It was a second or two later that the smile suddenly disappeared as if it had never even been there. His face turned serious.

Moira's heartbeat picked up. "What's wrong?"

His eyes softened as he recognized the evident worry in her voice. "Moira.." he drawled. "I.."

Staring at him, she noticed certain things she'd never seen before. Like the freckles on his nose, that his hair was constantly overshadowing his ears and that he had a stronger eyebrow game than she did. It mesmerized her, and made her forget that he'd wanted to say something. After a while, his fingers curled against the denim as he pulled his hand away from her leg, asking, "Aren't you gonna answer that?"

She briefly looked around where she was, and noticed that the phone was ringing. She hadn't even heard it.

"Right," She stood up quickly, almost knocking Harry over. She hurried towards the phone, planning an apology in her head and hoping she hadn't caused any bruises on him.

Meanwhile, Harry was having an eternal battle with himself.

God almighty.

Bloody hell.

He'd almost told her he loved her, again.

It wasn't like he didn't want to tell her, he did. The words just never seemed to be able to leave his mouth, as if telling her was too big of a step. Hell, they had a son together. Screw steps. And yet, he couldn't do it. Perhaps he was scared she wouldn't say it back? Or that it would scare her and distance herself from him. Maybe the guilt from not telling her the truth was stopping him...

He loved her, her loved her with his soul, body and mind. He'd still love her tomorrow or within 20 years and he was sure there wasn't anybody in the world he could love more than he loved Moira. And thus, he promised himself that he would confess his love after he'd told her about the other thing.

"Oh my god!"

Moira came rushing back into the living room, dropping herself beside him on the couch, she exclaimed again. "Oh. My. God." This time slower, as if shocked.

Harry's eyebrows scrunched together. "What?"

"That was Dr. Patel."

"Where?" He asked, seeming genuinely confused.

"On the phone, silly." She rolled her eyes, giggling.

His stomach twisted with nerves, and he felt curious and scared to death at the same time. Why did Dr. Patel call her? He swallowed the lump forming in his throat. "What did she want."

"She called me to schedule a meeting with my spe-" she cut herself off, her eyes widening.

"A meeting with your what?" He asked with fake curiosity, the guilt stabbing him in the chest.

Moira took a deep breath, mentally preparing herself for what she was about to confess. She nodded to myself, adjusting it all, and prepared for the worse.

"You know why I never want to talk about Ollie's dad?" Her hands fumbled together, growing restless insantly.

"Uhh no?"

"Because I don't know who his dad is."

Harry stared at her for an instance, with a face as blank as an unwritten page. She didn't know what to think of it, or what to expect. Was that a good sign?

He cleared his throat. "What do you mean?"

"Ollie's dad is a sperm donor." Moira uttered quietly.

The guilt was eating him from inside out, making him feel like the worst person alive. He wanted to hold her and scream at her he already knew all this, because he was the dad. He was her sperm donor. But he couldn't. He had to stick to the plan.

"Please say something?"

"I-"

"Harry," she breathed his name, choking back tears. "Please don't leave me."

Her lip trembled, and he couldn't stand the sight of his Moira looking so panicked and.. fragile. It showed him a whole other side of her, one she'd always managed to hide. Everything was out in the open, on full display. Her true feelings were in clear view and he could see how truly terrified she looked. It reminded him of when Bambi's mother got shot by hunters.

Wordlessly dragging her onto his lap, he wrapped his arms around her tiny frame in a secure embrace. Lightly cupping her chin, he brought her closer to his face, though she refused looking anywhere near him.

"Look at me," he demanded in a low murmur.

Slowly letting her eyes trail up to meet his, she was close to bursting out crying.

"I will never, ever leave you."

That's when the tears broke loose, they slid down her cheeks like waterfalls, their force causing her to hiccup violently. She clutched onto Harry's sweater and buried her face in his chest to stifle her sobbing.

The sound broke his heart, making him hold her even tighter. He repeatedly kissed her forehead, and eventually forced her up so he could meet her mouth. Capturing her in a heated, meaningful kiss. Ignoring the tears that were still dropping down her cheeks, he kept them locked together until finally, he could feel her stop shaking and her breathing even out.

He then mumbled against her lips, "You mean everything to me."

She closed the space between them, granting him with another kiss. As if to say 'you mean everything to me too' without actually saying it.

"So that's why your mom asked if I was the sperm donor earlier." Harry more said than asked, trying to make her get used to idea of him indeed being the daddy.

"Yeah, I thought you would realize what she meant by that." She laid her head down on his shoulder, the warm skin under his clothes making her feel at ease.

"I didn't." He did.

There was a momentary silence.

"Harry?" She croaked to him, blinking rapidly to stop more tears from falling.

"Yes?"

"Will you come to the meeting with me?" she asked finally, trying not to sound hesitant or feeble.

"Of course, baby."
