《Daddy Unknown》Chapter 7

He could smell her intoxicating perfume as soon as he stepped through her front door. She had brought her hair up into a classic bun, leaving small strands of her blonde hair to curl delicately around her face. Really, it looked magical on her. She was wearing a loose t-shirt that outlined her bump wonderfully, a crystal necklace, a grey cardigan, loose jeans and cat-themed flats. No one had ever looked more adorable.

"Holy.. shit." Was all he said. Looking around Moira's apartment with his mouth agape, taking in all the details of her beautifully styled home. "You have to give me the name of your interior designer. This is amazing!"

Moira blushed, feeling flattered. "Umm.. I am."

"No way." He frowned. "I didn't know you were an interior designer."

"I'm one of the head designers at Starck & Co, actually." She told him, beaming proudly.

"I've never heard of them, but then again, I don't know much about furnishing."

She let out a slight giggle at his brutal honestly, and told him how she'd been working there since she was 22, fresh and straight out of University. She was a full time employee, 5 days a week, from 9 in the morning 'till 7 in the evening. And in the weekends, she usually worked from her home office. Mainly because she wanted to. Some might define her as a workaholic, but Moira simply loved her job. The pay was generous and Mr. Starck -her boss- adored her, treating her like a daughter.

Her only family was her mother, who she visited every Sunday.

Just her mother, since she'd never known her father, and that didn't bother her in the slightest. They'd been a good team: Moira & Emilia King, always trying to enjoy life and make each other laugh. Her mother was and still is a charming woman, loving yet feisty. Her best friend. She'd never get bored around her and even now, 11 years after she moved out of the house she'd grown up in, she still missed Emelia's everyday presence.

Besides her however, she didn't have many loved ones. And she didn't mind, since her job kept her busy. From university, she did have a few friends. But they only saw her once in a while, if they were lucky.

All in all, Moira wasn't much of a people-person, finding them untrustworthy and hypocritical. She preferred being on her own. And could easily entertain herself. Hence why she'd chosen to become pregnant the way she did. Instead of letting it all depend on a guy to step into her life and love her enough to gift her with children.

Trust wasn't something easily given by her, that's why her behaviour towards Harraël seemed so... extraterrestrial. She would rather not talk to people, let alone invite them to her house to watch movies and eat pizza. She liked his presence as well as despised it, he was nice but he could also be a threat to her peaceful life. Nevertheless, she had invited him to her house to watch movies and eat pizza. Willingly, voluntarily.

"You aren't still working, are you?" He asked, worry clear in his voice. It made unexpected butterflies start fluttering in her stomach.

"No, I went with maternity leave three weeks ago."

"Good." He nodded firmly in approval.

She huffed, the butterflies from moments ago vanishing. As if she needed his approval to go with maternity leave.

Annoyance was boiling up inside of her, once again. And she wasn't sure for how long she could keep it at bay this time. Her hormones were playing with her emotions. She felt like crying one half of the time, and like murdering something the other.

"Let's get this party started!" She sputtered, trying to rid herself of her irritations in the old fashioned way, distraction. Ripping the warm pizza boxes from his hold and setting them on top of her coffee table, she flopped down onto the bouncy cushions of her couch.

"I already picked a movie, hope you don't mind." She announced more than asked as she flashed him the DVD cover of 'The Da Vinci Code'.

Harraël shrugged and took a seat beside her, sitting a little too close to her liking. She let it slide and focused on the television screen.

Halfway through the movie -when every last piece of the pizzas had been long devoured- an unfamiliar feeling interrupted her from her haze. Only when she felt it for the second time, a few minutes later, did she realise what it was.

"Oh my god!"

Harraël's face morphed into one of concern when he saw her shocked expression, "What's wrong?!"

Snatching his hand from his lap and making the skin her fingers touched tingle, she placed his -much larger- hand on her baby bump.

They sat in silence for minutes on end, the movie long forgotten. Moira stared at her bump expectedly while Harraël turned more confused by the second.

Nothing happened.

But suddenly, he felt her body slightly trembling underneath his hand. Was she in pain?

Concerned, he rose his head to see her blue eyes rimmed in a red-ish color; there were no tears streaming down her cheeks, but she looked like she was about to cry.

"What's wrong? Are you hurt?" He asked quickly.

She feebly shook her head, shakily wiping at her damp eye. "No."

"Then what's wrong? Why are you crying?"

"I'm so happy." She smiled at him-a breathtaking smile.

That was when he felt it. A movement so small -yet prominent-, that he wouldn't have noticed if he hadn't paid attention.

The baby had kicked against his hand.

His eyes lightened instantly, and he erupted into a boyish dimpled grin. It was like someone had told him that he won the lottery-he was overflowing in joy, like a little boy, although he was far from it. He gazed up at her in complete amazement as she peered back at him with happy tears rolling down her rosy cheeks.

This was probably the most eye-opening, and special thing he had ever experienced.

Harraël wrapped his arms around her, Moira sobbing in the crook of his neck, wetting his t-shirt.

"Was this the first time that had happened?"

She nodded into his skin and he could feel her body slowly starting to calm down. Lifting her head away from Harry, she sat up straight. Her breaths were coming out ragged and uneven.

"When is your due date?"

"The 27th of January." she said quietly, her tears drying.

"Really? That's in like three months!" He rattled, and she froze up when his warm thumbs wiped across her cheek. His eyes stared down at the wetness on the tip of his fingers before he wiped it off on his shirt.

"And do you have any names yet?"

She smiled at his enthusiasm. "I do."

"Will you tell me?" He had a casual tone, but she could hear the curiosity in it

She hesitated. The names were personal, and for some reason unknown to her, she wanted him to like the ones she'd picked.

"When the baby's born I'll know, anyway. So you can tell me."

The idea that he'd still be by her side when she'd give birth to her baby, awoke certain emotions inside of her. She didn't know what they were but they warmed her entire being and she liked it. And if he meant what he said, he did have a point.

Gazing down at her fumbling hands, she shyly mumbled, "For a boy Flynn, Gabriel or Oliver. And for a girl Rose, Stella or Scarlett."

"Those are wonderful names!"

He chuckled when her cheeks blazed in response to the flattery.

"You seem to know what you're talking about." She mumbled, so softly that it was barely audible. "Do you have any experience?"

"Umm, yeah. My sister has a kid, Bella, she's five. An absolute bloody nightmare to get to sleep. Besides that she's an angel." Harraël said, now sounding distracted.

How cute, he had a little niece. She wondered whether he was good with her? And how she call him? Uncle Harr? Just Harraël? Or just uncle? Did she look similar to hi-

Her eyebrows furrowed a little when she felt his eyes wander over her, and stop at her bump. She couldn't help but feel intimidated and slightly overwhelmed from the strong look in his eyes-from the fierce determination smoldering into her. She'd never seen such an intense look in a male's eyes. She didn't think she'd ever seen anyone look at a pregnant woman's stomach like this before, either. It both frightened and captivated her, all at the same time.

She couldn't look away from his face, his eyes even ensnaring her, immobilizing her to the couch. And after a few moments of silence, she could finally feel her heartbeat return to normal, the overwhelming happiness she once felt draining away, leaving only utter content.

"Would you like to tag along for my next ultrasound?"

Never in the world would she have asked him that question if it weren't for the fascinated look in his eyes when staring at her swollen stomach. Every other person would have looked creepy doing it, yet Harraël managed to pull it off. It suit him somehow.

Without a moment of hesitation, he exclaimed very loudly and very happily, "Yes!"

He cleared his throat a little, trying to get himself to calm the hell down. He was acting like a total idiot, that he was sure of. To his surprise, she had an almost amused smile as she watched him awkwardly scratch the back of his neck.

"I mean.. uhh yes, I'd love to." He lowered his gaze shyly.

By then, the movie had already finished.
