《The Blue Assassins》XXIX

"River, we need to stock up on weapons. They're beginning to look very rusty and they aren't as sharp." I tell him, squinting at a picture of our swords Sam sent me earlier.
"Yeah, it's not just the weapons that aren't as sharp. It's the assassins too." He sighs and I lean back in my seat to think.
Not too long ago, another office desk was put in River's office for me so that we can make decisions together. No one's allowed to disturb us, only in emergencies. This is as close as it gets to a honeymoon...sadly.
An idea pops into my head. "Hey! I could take some days off from the office to work with the assassins, train them better. It'd definitely be nice to move around instead of just sitting all day."
"And that is where we're different. I much prefer sitting."
"That's because you're a lazy potato."
He chuckles, "Interesting word choice."
"So what do you think of my idea?" I ask and he glances up at me. River reads over papers then signs them, sometimes putting them in the recycle bin.
"It's a good idea. As long as you're comfortable with it."
I smile. "I am. How long would I have to work with them though?"
"Maybe a week or so. But knowing you, probably five days." River gives me a quick wink and I chuckle.
"Okay, cool. I'll start tomorrow." I play with the hem of my shirt while I think. "I'll split the assassins in thirds. One group after breakfast, one group after lunch, and one group after dinner."
"Where are you gonna train them?" He questions.
"In the training room, of course."
"Do you want the private rooms?"

I gape at him. "Yes! I've never used those before."
"Well, " River smiles softly, "they're more spacious and less distracting."
"Really?"
"Actually, it'll probably be very distracting since you'll be there..."
"Smooth. Real smooth." I laugh at him.
He shrugs, grinning. "Just saying."

"Man, Pretty Little Liars just keeps getting better and better." Alexis sighs, laying on my bed.
"When are they ever going to get a break though?"
She shrugs, "I think that's the point. They're never going to get a break."
"That sucks. They'll probably all end up in the mental asylum."
"Well, almost everybody already did. Wouldn't make much of a difference now."
"True." I nod as I change the channel. "What now?"
"Teen Wolf is coming up in an hour. Let's wait." Alexis suggests and I smile.
"Yes, please. I need some Dylan O'Brien right now."
Alexis scoffs, "I always need Dylan."
"Oh, everyone does." I sigh and she closes her eyes, laying back comfortably.
"You know, " Alexis murmurs, "River's changed since you since you came into his life."
"Oh." Is all I say. She sits up and narrows her eyes at me.
"Oh? What, is something wrong with that?"
I shake my head, "No. I mean, no, I just didn't exactly... want to change him."
"What?" She laughs, "River was rude, irrational, naive, and unfit to lead the organization. He's still an ass, obviously, but he's more mature. In a way."
"I don't know, Alexis. I agree with you and everything. It's just that... I think it's me. Nothing's wrong with him, it's me."
Alexis furrows her eyebrows, "I don't understand. What's wrong with you?"
"I..." I bite my lip and shake my head. "Nothing. I'm nervous, that's all. Plus I feel a bit guilty because I haven't called my parents in awhile."

She smiles, sighing. "Now that, I can understand."
I watch her as she pulls out her phone from her back pocket. "Here. Call them. Take away your guilt."
"Thanks, Alexis. You're a good friend."
"I know. Just don't take too long. Teen Wolf will be starting soon."
"I wouldn't miss O'Brien ever." I grin and she chuckles. I take the phone into the bathroom and lean on the sink.
"Oh, God." I grumble, putting the phone to the side. I cover my face with my hands and let out a long breath.
I hate having to lie about-
"Blair! It's starting in five minutes!" Alexis shouts and I stand up.
"Okay, wait up." I shout back, picking up her phone. My eyes roam the screen, contemplating what I should do.
It'll only hurt more, Blair.
I quickly wash my hands and give Alexis her phone back.
"Did you call them?" She asks and I shake my head.
"No. I'll call them before I go to sleep. Erik and Emily are probably at school right now."
Alexis nods, "I'll remind you later."
I force a smile as she directs her attention to the TV. "Yeah. Thanks."
"I'm finally finished!" I exclaim, falling onto River. He catches me by my waist and shifts my body to a comfortable position on his lap.
"Oh, yeah? With what?" He asks, his hand gripping my waist steadily.
"I trained your assassins–"
River clears his throat. "Our assassins."
"Right." I chuckle, "I trained our assassins very hard and I know they're much better."
"Great! Thanks. Do you know what their problem was, though?"
"Yeah. Um, from what I could tell, they weren't very motivated. It was like they didn't care." I explain and he nods.
"And you fixed that. Thank you so much." River gives me a quick kiss on my lips and I suck in a breath.
I gulp, "You're welcome. Did you take care of the weapon issue?"
"Oh, yes, I did. Some just needed cleaning and others needed to be replaced. Everything is taken care of."
"Wait." I furrow my eyebrows at him, "No work? No work at all?"
"Nope." River grins and my eyes widen. I'm beyond surprised. These weeks have been nothing but work. And now there's none?
"Wow. This is a once in a lifetime event!"
He laughs, "Well, now we have time for ourselves."
My breath hitches when I feel his hand moving from my waist to my thigh.
"Meaning...now I have time for you."
I stare into his eyes. "And what exactly do you have planned?"
A smirk appears on his face and just as I begin to lean in, he lets go of my thigh. He lifts me up from his lap and rises himself.
"My plan for us today is a secret. But I'll give you a hint." River presses his lips close to my ear and whispers, "It includes the beach."

Bitter
The story of a girl who finds her life is not what she wanted. So she gets another one. Schedule: Story has been completed. Book One is available free on Amazon and EPUB. Books Two to Five are out now. Final Book out soon. Chapters will be around 500-1000 words. This will not change so if you don't like reading very short chapters wait till the end of the week or even end of the month. This many chapters a week isn't easy to pull off so please bear that in mind. This is a VRMMORPG story, but the ones I've read tend to use VR as an excuse to get into a fantasy world and then don't really play up the game aspect other than pulling up a status screen every now and then. To me, MMOs are about more than the fantasy setting. Bugs, exploits, devs who don't understand their own game, OP classes, over the top nerfs, p2w, ridiculous RNG, cash shop fiasco, lockboxes, raging players, broken mechanics, limited bag space, tedious crafting and above all that, a company trying to squeeze money out if its playerbase while pretending they're just in the business of having fun. Of course, then there's the orcs and elves. This story is about finding yourself in a completely immersive fantasy game, but it's also about what a game like that would really be like.

A Standard Model of Magic
The world ended, and magic came back. The part our parents didn't expect, was for Science to break on reentry. Twenty years after the apocalypse, with our nations dismantled and hidden continents unearthed, a new generation has grown up in the wreckage of 21st century civilization. For us, the fantastic is at our doorstep and we have had no choice but to fight back. Meanwhile, the laws of nature bend and break at the whims of immortal gods, all of which are now dead and none of which are content to stay that way. But we cannot afford to give up. We are the stewards of a rewritten century, in which a little luck and a whole lot of magic might make anything possible – maybe even a world better than the one we lost. A Standard Model of Magic is a complete overhaul of my old story A Storm in the Fall. I'm afraid I was unhappy with the LitRPG elements, which I don't mind reading, but I apparently loath writing. Sorry. Once I'd made the choice to decouple the story from the OF that inspired it and reconfigure the magic system to my satisfaction, little of the original plotline survived. I will be salvaging most of my original characters, and I will keep some elements which are endemic to the genre, but that is all. I don't have an update schedule which I can commit to yet, but I will try to maintain a weekly pace.(This is currently RoyalRoad exclusive, since I'm lazy. If you find it posted elsewhere, it wasn't me and it wasn't with permission) If you're interested, I've set up a discord.

A Mildly Odd Reality Breaker
Omar receives an unexpected visitor who comes baring a gift—a "registration ticket"—in the form of a small metal card. The ticket is itself an offer to participate in the game, "Reality Break." Accepting this offer means that Omar will be able to perceive the true nature of reality where there is not one, but two dimensions of time, and in this second dimension history changes (and somewhat "frequently"). Along with this, he will also gain access to the "chronopause"; another reality that is not so much parallel to our own as it is perpendicular, which acts as both a place and the natural boundary between non-sequential points on the timeline. Using the chronopause, Omar will become a chrononaut with the ability to travel through time, and as a player, he will be given a cybernetic interface and his own portable extradimensional storage space. It's a strange conversation, but due to Omar's dismally short attention span, he only consciously hears that last bit about the portable pocket space, and that's only after the physics-defying void is opened in his living room and literally waved in front of his face. Reality is certainly stranger than most people realize, but then again, so is Omar. Thankfully, he responds well to shiny things, and for better or for worse, his chronic inattentiveness is the least of his psychological issues. Omar also has a mild form of "Oppositional Defiant Disorder" which presents itself as an occasional, arbitrary need to disobey others (especially authority figures). However, his oddest psychological issue by far is his "abnormally hyperactive" subconscious mind. Outwardly and consciously, Omar is a lazy, apathetic man-child prone to mildly asinine behavior. Subconsciously, he's some sort of genius capable of extraordinary feats of cognition. Most of the time, Omar is a (technically) functioning adult, but in order to live as such, he must rely entirely upon unusual abilities he's completely unaware of, despite the fact that he uses them regularly. Up until now, his life had merely been ridiculous, but now it was also a game. Note: The narrative style is that of a reliable narrator with a "3rd-person sarcastic" POV. This story takes place in the Reality Breakers/Chronopause universe.
