《The Blue Assassins》XXIV

"Going on a mission with your fiancé, huh? How romantic!" Sam smiles brightly and I roll my eyes.
"Yeah, blood and murder is such a cute couple thing. Totally romantic!"
She glares at me, "Your sarcasm is not appreciated."
"Well it should be. It's one of the many services I offer for free so... Take advantage, girl!" I wink at her, making her shake her head.
"Just put on your vest."
"You got it, dude." I quickly put on my vest and tighten it. Her eyes turn into slits as she stares at me.
"You're gonna die like that." Sam informs me and tightens my vest.
"Yeah, well, I might just die right now of suffocation." I loosen it but she tightens it even more. I wince, gritting my teeth.
"You're not gonna die before your wedding. Got it?"
I whisper, "Yep."
"Good." She smiles then hugs me. I take a gasp for air, which makes her laugh.
"Alright. I gotta go." I push her away and she nods. I open my door but Sam stops me.
"Just...just don't die out there, okay? Please."
"I don't know how I would. It's a mini mission, Sam. Not one of the life and death types."
"Still. Just don't die." She sighs, genuine.
I smile at her, "I won't. I promise."

"Who's the victim?" I question River as we sit in the helicopter.
"Stewart Sonia. He recently harmed members of our organization. Immensely." River answers, his jaw clenching.
I smile slightly, "So we're gonna make him pay, huh?"
"Absolutely."
"Sir!" The pilot called and River stood up.
"Yes, Assassin?"
"We have landed." The pilot reports and he nods.
"Great." He looks back at me and I cross my arms. His eyebrows furrow, "What?"
"Where are your manners, River?" I frown at him, making him sigh.
"Thanks, Assassin." He says, grudgingly, but I smile either way.
"You're welcome, sir."
"Happy?" River mocks me and I smile.
"Yes, actually. Very."
"Looks like you'll get what's coming to you." River pulls me up and connects my vest with his. Then, without a warning, he jumps off the helicopter with me attached to him.

"Oh Jesus! You crazy son of a–" I clutched onto him when I looked down. He laughed.
"Calm down, my queen. You're safe with me."
I smile, trying to calm myself, "That rhymed."
"I know." River leaned his head closer to me, which made me gulp. He whispered, "It meant to."
If I moved my head the slightest bit upward...our lips would touch. Just the thought had my heart beating faster than the Flash.
"Blair." River mumbled and I gasped quietly. His lips had touched my ear but I could feel it all the way down to my feet.
I forgot we were falling.
But it soon hit me.
"Where's your parachute?" I ask him, my fear building up.
"Who said anything about a parachute?" He responded as he gazed down.
I nearly scream. "W–what?! Are we gonna freaking die?!"
"Huh?" River blinks, "Oh. Of course not. Didn't I just tell you? You're safe with me."
"Doesn't seem like it." I start to hyperventilate and his eyes widen.
"Hey, hey. Don't worry. You're gonna be okay. I got you." River brushes back my hair and caresses my face. I slowly nod.
"Why haven't we gotten to the ground yet?"
"The helicopter was really high up. But we're about to get on the ground."
"Oh...wait what?" I frantically look around, "Aren't we gonna go splat?"
"Just wait, will ya?" He sighs and I huff, exasperated. But I trust River. I know he'll protect me. It might just be the old inner me saying that but... It's different this time.
This time, we actually have a relationship.
"Okay, okay. You ready?" He stares at me and I nod.
"Yeah."
"Hang on." River embraces me tightly and I close my eyes. Suddenly, I feel something on my feet then a feeling of flying.
I wait until it's over. I wait until it's steady and safe.
"Blair." River murmurs, "Open your eyes."
With reluctance, I open my eyes and see a trampoline underneath us. We land on it and go back up. Then River stops and jumps onto the concrete floor. He divides us and I stretch my body.

"Are you alright? You're not hurt at all?"
I shake my head, "No. No, I'm fine."
"Good. We gotta get moving. The target will be close at any second." He leads me down some corridors until we get to an alley.
River glances at his watch, "On three, we get him."
I nod, loading and aiming my weapon. He leans against the wall and I silently count in my head.

3!
River pounces on the person exactly on time and they fall to the ground. I see a passerby, who looks extremely scared, and quickly shoot at them. It obviously wasn't a bullet. Just a little shot of an amnesia drug.
"Do you have him?" I question as I search for any witnesses.
"Yeah." River glares at the man while the man shakes in fear. But his shaking stops once River presses his sword onto the man's chin.
"You, Stewart Sonia, have been sentenced to death for harming members of The Blue Assassins." River stares at him with pure hatred. "Enjoy your death."
River applied only little pressure on Stewart's neck but that was enough. The lifeless body laid beside the trash in the alley. I felt sick, like I always do in every mission.
River left a note written in Stewart's blood on the alley wall.
Stewart Sonia. He deserved to die out of the blue.
I frown at River as we walk back to where the trampoline was. "Really? Out of the blue?"
"Well, I can't reveal our organization. But I have to somehow give us the credit." He shrugs and I scoff. It's silent for a few good moments.
"How are we getting back to the helicopter?" I sigh and he smiles.
"Oh, the helicopter is coming to us."
River connects our vests together again and he jumps onto the trampoline. Once he does, I see a ladder higher up.
"Jump higher!" I encourage and he takes a deep breath. We finally reach the ladder and climb up to the helicopter.
"Hello, sir. Is the mission complete?"
"Yes. Call it in." River nods as the pilot begins to fly higher.
"What did he do exactly?" I murmur loud enough for him to hear me.
River sighs, "He molested a member's child."
I gulp. "Oh."
Another wave of silence passes over us.
"What a monster!" I exclaim and River chuckles.
"Yeah. I mean, it's a child. That's disgusting. Children are so innocent and don't deserve the horrible people in the world." He stares at the ground as if it's one of those horrible people.
I smile in thought. He'd be a great father...
"Anyway," River looks at me as I sit across from him. "Why are you so far away?"
I simply shrug, which he grins at. He sits beside me and gets close enough that our shoulders touch. We sit there quietly.
Until I kick his foot.
"What the hell?" River raises an eyebrow at me and I laugh. I kick him again.
He smirks, "Oh, I see. Two can play at that game."
River kicks my foot and I kick him back. He kicks me again but when I move to kick him, he holds my foot down.
"River!" I whine while he smiles.
"Blair!" He mocks me, which makes me pout. I use my other foot to try to push away his foot. But it's like his foot is made of rock!
"Fine." I cross my arms and close my eyes. "Be that way."
Suddenly, I feel River's foot on my calf and he starts to move his foot up then down. My eyes open instantly when his foot tries to get higher up.
"What do you think you're doing?" I hiss, making sure nobody in the helicopter saw. When he didn't answer me, I gave him a sharp look.
"Are you gonna answer me?"
"What was the question again?" River gives me a cheeky grin. I repeat the question with impatience.
His eyes gleam in mischief. I've never seen this side of him before.
Slowly, he leans closer to me and puts his lips on my cheek, close to my ear. He whispers huskily, "I have no idea."
And that's when I realized, he was attracted to me. Good. Now it's mutual.

The Cyclical Nature of Time
A girl’s life ends unexpectedly early, or so it would seem. Instead of eternal nothingness, she wakes up in an empty valley with no clue how she got there. Taking her predicament in stride, she sets out to do something about it. Unfortunately for her, the first couple of people she meets aren’t much help. They claim they haven’t heard of electricity and dress as if they were on a break from their job at a Viking-themed amusement park. MC is a somewhat normal girl. She's pragmatic and not very angsty. The story is tagged with anti-hero, but to be clear, she is not a villain. She does good if she can, she just isn't morally motivated to do so. The story starts out smelling of fantasy but will eventually shift towards sci-fi. It contains some supernatural elements and has a strong lead, but it is not your usual power trip. Expect a story that takes its time, but not to the point where entire chapters are spent on mindless chit-chat. I’m not into that. This is my first serious attempt at writing and I've learnt a lot writing this. Unfortunately, that shows. Chapter 1-10 is slow and rather pointless. Things get better, but it is not until chapter 25 or so that I began understanding how to structure chapters and to make them support the larger story. I publish about 3000 words a week (every sunday) but I write about 10000 words a week. Sticking to that pace, which is easy, the last chapter will be out by July.
