《LOVELESS》Chapter 56

Detective Kennedy parks in front of a ranch-style house in a suburban area. The detective cross-checks the address in his notes with the number painted on the curb before getting out of the car.

When he reaches the front door, he knocks on it, and waits a few moments before someone opens it. A woman, who looks to be in her early 40's, gives him a look as though she doesn't want to be bothered.

"Yes?"

"Hello. Is Briana home?"

"Hold on." She closes the door, and a few minutes later it reopens, revealing Briana with a look of confusion.

"Who are you?"

"Briana Billmore?"

"Who wants to know?"

"My name is Detective Jeffrey Kennedy." He shows her his badge. "I need to ask you some questions."

Briana quickly glances behind her before rushing outside, pulling the detective away from the front door. "Is this about Jonathon? Did he do something? Did he lose my car?"

"Your husband?"

"Yeah. If he's getting locked up, please tell me where I can get my car. I could really use it right now."

"Locked up for what?"

"I don't know. You're the one over here questioning me. But I'm sure whatever you guys think he did, he did it."

"Actually, I'm here to find out where you were on Easter."

Briana furrows her eyebrows. "Easter?"

"Yes, Easter."

"Umm. My cousin's house. Why?"

"Which cousin? Yemi Hardwick?"

"Hell no. I went to my cousin Demi's house. But why are you asking me that? What's going on?"

"Was Demi there the night Angela Hardwick was killed?"

Briana looks like she's just seen a ghost. "...That case was closed. You shouldn't be asking me anything about that."

"Actually the case has officially been reopened."

"Why is it being reopened? My cousins already told the police they didn't see the person who attacked her."

"We received some new information that leads us to believe we can solve the case this time."

"Really?"

"Yes. So, was Demi there that night?"

"There were a lot of people there."

"Like who?"

"Isn't that information in the files?"

"Yes. But surprisingly, you weren't questioned when the case was opened. I would like to know what you know, since you were at the hospital before Angela died."

"It's in the report that I was at the hospital?"

"Like I said... I received new information."

"Hmph." Briana glances behind her at the large window, and catches the lady, who answered the door earlier, peeking through the blinds. "Whatever you have to ask, make it quick. I don't want my landlord all up in my business."

"How much do you know about the murder? And who informed you to come to the hospital?"

Briana takes a long deep breath. "I don't know much. Like I said, I wasn't there. All I know is that my mom and her cousins were out partying that night, and someone approached them and fought Angela. She was still breathing when she arrived to the hospital."

"And who informed you?"

"I don't remember who told me."

"But someone definitely called you to come to the hospital?"

"Yes."

"Were you close to Angela?"

"No. But my mother was."

"Okay, so was she the one who informed you? Your mother?"

"I don't know- Maybe. I told you I don't remember. You're wasting your time asking me these questions. I'm not even a witness."

"But it sounds like you're an accomplice."

Briana sucks her teeth. "How so?"

"They told you to come to the hospital but no one told Angela's only child to come. Something isn't right about that, especially when Yemi and her mother were very close."

"Yemi was informed. I told her myself."

"Did someone tell you to tell her?"

"No. I do have a damn heart. I felt like Yemi should've been at the hospital to see her mother before she died."

"So if you felt she needed to be there, why didn't anyone else that actually witnessed the crime have that same feeling? Why did you have access to her mother's cell phone? And why did you wait until Yemi called that cell phone to tell her about her mother?"

Briana starts rubbing her forehead, overwhelmed from all the questions. "...You need to leave."

"Are you withholding information?"

"I don't know anything. Now, leave me the fuck alone," she whisper-shouts.

The detective nods. "Well... thank you for your time." He starts to walk away, but then turns back around with his index finger up. "You reported your vehicle stolen, right?"

Briana rolls her eyes. She wants the detective to leave but really wants her car back. "I don't wanna file a report. I just want my car back."

"If you don't file a report, you probably won't get your car back."

Briana sighs in defeat, and then turns to walk back to the house.

"Mrs. Billmore..."

She faces him, and the detective pulls out his cell phone.

"Give me the make and model, and anything else you got on the car. I'll see what I can do."

Briana smirks, hopeful that the detective will really help her. She gives him the information, and he saves it in his note app.

NEXT MORNING

An alarm is blaring, and neither Sam nor Yemi are responding to it, as they lay fully naked on the bed. Yemi's hair covers her face, and Sam has a strong grip around her waist.

The alarm takes a quick pause before going off again. Yemi wakes up. She tries to get out of bed, but is blocked from Sam's hold on her. She moves her hair out of her face, and tries to feel for the phone to turn it off. She can't reach it. Half her arm is stuck under Sam.

"Sammmmmmm!"

Sam immediately sits up in a daze.

Yemi snatches Sam's phone before turning off the alarm. "Why is your alarm going off this early?"

Sam sighs, closing his sleepy eyes. "I told all the guys to come in early this morning before the gym opens."

"When did you do that?"

"When I left the gym. In our group chat."

"Oh." Yemi sits up. "So what are you going to say to the front desk guy?"

"About putting his arm around you?" He asks with his eyes still closed.

"Well... that and some other things he did."

Sam immediately opens his eyes. He looks back and mean-mugs her. "What other things?"

"You promise you won't get physical with him?"

"What the fuck did he do, Yemi?"

"Why are you cussing at me?"

"I apologize. Now, tell me what the fuck he did."

Yemi shakes her head and sighs. "I'm only telling you so that he won't do it to anyone else."

"Yemi, just say it."

"...He was telling me how much he loved my ass, and then I asked him if you allowed him to speak like that to the guests."

"-What kind of question is that? Of course, I don't."

"I know you don't, babe. I was just trying to get him to stop talking to me like that."

Sam sighs in aggravation. "Alright, I'll handle it."

"But that's not it."

"Did he touch your ass?"

"No. But he covered my mouth and told me he could put his magical hands on me."

"Are you fuckin' kidding me?" The boom in his voice causes Yemi to jump. "Why are you just now telling me this?"

"I didn't want to say it in front of him."

"You could've told me when we went outside, Yemi. I wouldn't've left him at the front desk, if I knew he did that shit to you."

"Please don't be mad at me. I saw how you were looking at him already, and I just wanted to wait until the right time to tell you."

"Stop waiting until later to tell me shit. No telling what that muthafucka is doing while I'm gone." Sam stands up and heads to the bathroom.

"Sam?"

"I need to get ready for this meeting. We'll talk later." Sam closes the door, leaving Yemi sitting there, pouting.

SHORT WHILE LATER

Detective Kennedy is at his desk talking to another detective across from him. "So how's your case going?"

"Let's just put it this way... I can see why they closed the case in the first place."

Detective Kennedy makes an eek face.

"How about yours?"

"I'm not sure, yet. I questioned two women yesterday. The first one is definitely hiding something, like she's trying to cover for someone, and the second one said the same thing that was written in the report."

A man suddenly comes into the room and walks towards Detective Kennedy. "Kennedy, you're in luck!"

Detective Kennedy spins his swivel chair around and faces the man. "Talk to me."

"I was finally able to enhance that old video surveillance you gave me."

"Yes!" The detective fist pumps, and then hops up. "Lead the way, Bob." He grabs a notepad and pen, and then follows Bob to an office full of computers and equipment.

They sit down and Bob presses play on the video.

Detective Kennedy moves his head closer to the screen as he watches intensely. On the video, we see a crowd surrounding what looks to be two people arguing. It's clear that it's two women in the altercation, but the faces are not clear because of the distance from the parking lot surveillance camera.

Another woman comes out of nowhere and pushes "Woman A" down on the ground. "Woman A" gets back up and slaps the aggressor really hard. "Woman B" helps the aggressor by tripping "Woman A" to the ground. "Woman B" backs away as the aggressor grabs the hair of "Woman A". The aggressor hits "Woman A" in the face repeatedly.

Everyone looks on as the aggressor gets the best of "Woman A". "Woman A" finds the strength to kick the aggressor, upsetting the aggressor even more. The aggressor then slams "Woman A's" head on the ground a moment before "Woman B" pulls the aggressor away. Three other women try to wake "Woman A" up, but she won't move.

The onlookers run off and scatter to their cars.

A few plates are visible as the cars drive from under the camera. "Pause it."

Bob stops the video for each car, and Kennedy writes down each license plate number.

"Thanks Bob. Hopefully, I can get something with this."

"Good luck."

Detective Kennedy goes back to his desk, and opens the software to enter the license plate numbers.
