《LOVELESS》Chapter 41

Jamie enters the office and sees Sam turned away from the door. Jamie glances down, nervously, before closing the door. "I want to explain my-"
He's cut off mid-sentence as Sam lunges at him, strong-arming Jamie against the wall.
"Come on, man," Jamie pleads.
"Are you fucking her?" He seethes through gritted teeth.
"No, man. You know me better than that."
Sam flings him against another wall. Jamie winces and hastily responds, "Sam, I swear to you I'm not on some foul shit. I ran into her almost two years ago, and she told me how bad she felt and how she wanted to make amends, so I told her to wait because you were still not over what she did."
"And you never told me that shit?" He asks incredulously.
"I didn't think you would wanna hear about her."
Sam pounds the wall with his free hand, right next to Jamie's head. "So why the fuck would you keep in contact with her, then?"
Jamie sighs hopelessly. "I really thought she was genuinely worried about you, man."
Sam shakes his head, trying his best to calm down. "This shit is mad sus, yo."
"I know it sounds bad, but I had the best intentions. When I told her about Yemi, I thought she would be happy that you weren't holding on to what she did anymore. But instead, she started acting stupid."
Sam pushes Jamie away from him. "You shouldn't have told her shit about me."
Jamie rubs the back of his sore neck. "I know you're mad, but you gotta chill out, putting your hands on me."
And with that, Sam swiftly steps to him and punches his mouth.

Yemi clutches her phone while standing on the side of the G Wagon. She tucks in her bottom lip, trying to figure out her next move.
She unlocks her phone and then opens her Contacts before scrolling to Veronica. She hesitantly taps the video button. A moment later, Yemi shakes her head, feeling like she's making a mistake by calling. So she clicks the end button just as it starts to connect.
"Damn it," she whispers to herself.
Her phone starts ringing, and she sighs, seeing that it's Veronica Facetiming her back. Yemi takes a deep breath before accepting the video call.
"Hey chica. Why'd you hang up?"
"'Cause I shouldn't get you involved with this," Yemi responds, warily.
Veronica furrows her eyebrows, confused and concerned at the same time. She's about to open her mouth to speak when the waitress comes to her table.
"Hi. Are you all ready to order?"
"Yes we are... Yemi, give me one second, okay?"
"You're busy. I'll just call you la-"
"Yemi stop. I know something is bothering you, so don't hang up."

Yemi nods as she anxiously looks at the entrance of the gym.
Veronica turns her attention back to the waitress. "I would like the half rack of ribs please."
The waitress nods, and Veronica glances at her little cousins.
"They'll tell you what they want off the kids menu."
"Pizza please!" Stevie tells the waitress.
"You got it." The waitress smiles at him, and then looks at Max. "And for you?"
"Pretzel dogs!" Max shouts.
The waitress chuckles. "Great choice!" Then picks up the menus. "I'll put these orders right in."
"Thank you." Veronica smiles at the waitress before turning back to Yemi. "Sorry about that. So what's going on?"
"Can the kids hear me?"
Veronica looks at the kids who are looking straight at her, both smiling. Veronica smirks. "Yeah. Let me put my pods in." Veronica quickly pulls out her airpods from her bag. She connects them to the call before sticking them into her ears. "Alright, what's up?"
"Sam told me not to go inside the gym, and I'm worried he might really hurt Jamie."
"Wait, slow down. I'm confused. Why would he hurt Jamie? And why does he not want you to go inside?"
"Oh damn. I forgot you don't know what happened, last night."
"Something bad happened?"
"He saw his ex."
Veronica's eyes look like they're about to pop out of the sockets. "Where?!"
"At the church."
Her lip curls in response. "Why the fu-" She glances at the boys before changing her tone. "Why would she be in the church?"
"She's the one that's been calling Jamie lately."
Veronica's jaw drops, dramatically. "Oh. My. Gosh. Oh. My. Gosh."
"Yeah, and then Jamie showed up just now, wanting to explain his side of the story. Sam sounded really pissed when he told me to stay out here."
"Oh no -- You have to go inside, Yemi. You have to stop him from doing something that'll get him locked up."
"What if they're fighting? I won't be able to stop them."
"If he hears your voice, he'll stop. Trust me."
Yemi contemplates for a moment and then nods. "Okay, I'll go."
"I'll stay on the phone."
Yemi locks the truck and runs inside. "Where's his office?" She asks Veronica.
"All the way to the left."
Yemi starts to run in that direction when the front desk employee, Misty, notices her.
"Hey, what are you doing?" She jogs up to Yemi. "This side is for employees only."
"I'm here for Sam."
"He's in a meeting, right now, and he doesn't want anyone to disturb him. I can give him a message for you."
"I'm his girlfriend. I need to see him."

"I'm sorry. He didn't say anything about a girlfriend coming to see him."
Yemi doesn't see Veronica rolling her eyes. "Yemi!"
She looks down at the phone.
"Turn the phone around, so she can see me."
Yemi does just that, and Misty does a double take at the screen.
"Yo, you know me, right?" Veronica asks sarcastically.
"Oh, uh... Veronica, yes. Hi," she says, intimidated.
"You need to let her go to the office."
Misty stammers silently, "...Well-"
"Now!"
Misty nods before quickly walking away. Yemi turns the phone back around with a surprised look on her face.
"I don't know why Sam has those employees scared of him like that," Veronica vents to her.
Yemi sprints to the last door, where she hears indistinct voices. She hesitates before opening the door, and Veronica notices her expression.
"Someone stopped you again?"
"No. But something is telling me not to go inside."
"Yemi, please go in there before it gets worse."
Yemi sighs before slowly opening the door. She steps in and notices, on the side of the office, a flushed Sam standing over a bloody mouthed Jamie. Neither one of them are aware of Yemi's presence.
"Do you know how it felt seeing her, and then realizing I still have feelings for her?" Sam emotionally yells to Jamie.
Simultaneously, Veronica covers her mouth in shock and Yemi gasps, catching Sam's attention. His eyes quickly shift to Yemi, seeing the sadness written on her face. He instantly backs away from Jamie, moving towards Yemi.
"How long have you been standing there?" Sam whispers, silently praying she didn't hear his confession about Jasmine.
Jamie shakes his head, knowingly, while Sam's eyes plead with Yemi's. "Mamas..."
She shakes her head.
"That probably sounded worse than it really is," Sam says, trying to ease her mind.
Sam reaches for Yemi's hand, but she swiftly moves it away. She steps to the side of him and looks at Jamie who is now standing up. "I should've chilled out like you said." Sam furrows his eyebrows at her words. "You were right... I barely know him," Yemi tells Jamie dejectedly.
Sam turns around and scowls at Jamie, "You told her that shit?"
Jamie exhales in guilt and defeat. Sam strides back to him, ready to fight. He's so caught up in in the moment; he doesn't even notice Yemi walking out.
Yemi makes a beeline to the front door, not realizing Veronica is still on the phone. "Yemi, I don't think he meant it like that. I know for sure he only wants you."
Yemi squints at Veronica's face before abruptly ending the call.
While outside the gym, she immediately opens the Lyft app and inputs her home address. She's about to press the request button when Veronica's name pops up on the screen. Yemi growls quietly in frustration while declining the call. The Lyft app reappears and she quickly makes her request. "Please be close. Please be close," she whispers, hopeful a car will come before Sam comes out.
As the app is finding a driver, she unlocks the truck and rushes to the passenger door. She pulls her purse out just as her phone pings. She looks down at her phone and sees that the car is 3 minutes away. She exhales in relief and slams the door closed. She's about to run to the sidewalk when she realizes she still has Sam's car key. "Shit!"
She runs back to the gym and opens the door. She stands in the doorway, looking straight at the front desk. "Aye!" Misty turns her face to Yemi before Yemi launches the key to her. She flinches, but still manages to catch it just as Sam rushes out from his office. Yemi's eyes grow big at his presence before quickly disappearing from the door.
She sprints towards the sidewalk, and Sam bursts out from the gym. "Yemi!" Yemi doesn't look back as she makes her way to the curb, looking down the street for her driver.
"What are you doing?" He jogs up to her, and she snubs him. "Please don't ignore me."
Yemi's driver pulls up in front of her, and Sam does a double take at the car.
"So, you're just gonna leave? We're not gonna talk about this?"
Yemi reaches for the door, but Sam blocks her reach. "Stop, Sam."
"You're not going anywhere," he tells her calmly but sternly.
"Sam, just let me go. Please." She reaches for the door again, but Sam stands in front of it.
"Fuck. Why are you doing this?"
"You told me you wouldn't run away from me."
"That was before I found out the truth."
"I've been nothing but honest with you, Yemi."
"Oh yeah?" She asks sarcastically.
Sam sighs in frustration. "You have to let me explain what you heard."
"You don't have to explain anything to me. Now move." She pushes him with all her might, but he doesn't budge.
The driver rolls the window down. "Ma'am, are you gonna get in? I have to leave soon."
"Yes. I'm trying."
"She's not getting in, you can go." Sam intervenes.
"Sam, they're going to charge me a cancelation fee."
"That's your fault. You shouldn't've called them."
Yemi rolls her eyes at him.
"Why can't we just talk about this?"
"Because now I know why you don't love me... because you still love her!"
Sam looks away, absentmindedly. He's unsure of how to respond. Yemi takes this as her chance to move past him and to open the back door. She's halfway inside when Sam grabs her hand. She does a defense move to get out of his grasp, and Sam looks at her in shock. Yemi slams the door closed, and they both stare at each other through the window as the Lyft driver pulls off.
