I try to forget about my worries but the anxiousness eats me from inside. Hopefully I’m just overthinking things. I keep walking for five minutes, making sure I stay on the route, and just like the boy said, after around five minutes, I finally reach a large round building with a sign on it that says “Library”. I have finally arrived to my destination. Pushing the door aside and stepping inside, I finally let out a sigh.
I look around me in disappointment, I don’t know why, but I expected much more.
There is only a single floor, but the ceiling is very tall, maybe six meters in height.
In front of me there are ten sections of shelves, many of the shelves are empty, seems like books are not in high demand in this town… I hope I’ll be able to find the important things I’m looking for in this small selection of books.
To my right I see a male librarian, obviously he looks like almost everyone in this damn town.
Usually the librarian is a female… I hoped to find a behind the desk here,
I haven’t seen a single female since many days before I fell from the cliff…
The librarian was seated behind a table large table with piles of books on it, he sorting and marking them. I slowly walked towards him and tried to make sure he notices me before I speak to him.
“Hello! Could you please point me towards the area with history and geography books?”
The librarian looks at me with the look everyone outside looked at me with.
He returned his gaze to the book, and then again looked at me, and put the book down.
He hesitates a moment before answering but finally open his mouth.

“Yes, head to the 4th section on the right for history, it should be on the 3rd shelf.”
“And for the geography, we don’t have any, we only have a single map which is now in use by someone who took it for a while.”
“Thank you! I’ll come back when I’m done reading.”
I can’t help but begin to wonder again why do they all look at me like that…
Maybe they haven’t ever seen someone so different from them?
Heading to the 4th section and looking at the shelf, it surprises me how little the selection of useful books is, there is only a total of 20 books on the shelf and most of them are random topics like “The Evolution of Gardening”, “Achievements of Cooks”, “Sculptures Throughout The Years” and “Tales of Great Fencers”.
I could count the amount of books I could actually find information in on one hand, they were, “Settlements and Architecture”, “The Ancient God” and “Popular Myths and Stories”...
Opening the first book, I start going through the pages, noting everything of importance to myself. There are only two important findings… The first is that this settlement is the first of its kind, this town is the only town there is in thousands of kilometers around this area. No one actually knows where the houses came from or who built them, it is mentioned in the book that every single building and sculpture in this town, one day simply appeared.
The 2nd book talked about a being called “Ancient God”, might be the one who summoned my nice bath and gave me the nice gifts. The book is very short and simply describes how magnificent and omnipotent this being is.
The 3rd book has a lot of interesting information regarding my previous findings.
It is said that this might be the only town on this planet! The materials and ware in the market appear once in a every certain amount of time in random locations around the city, there is no constant pattern and no one can prove it is true. It seems like many people believe the Ancient God is the one who causes this and he is also the one who made the houses and sculptures.

“So the man posing for the sculptures might be this ‘Ancient God’ himself.”
The most interesting part is that it is rumored that the things usually appear near “mud” farms.
But, sadly, there were nothing in the books describing anything related to the people, only technological achievements were properly described. So many useless books.
Seeing as the librarian doesn’t mind me, I keep looking through the whole library in search for anything regarding the people or the location of this place, but nothing.
Nothing! Nothing in the books explained why there were no animals around this city.
Nothing explained why there were no trees, why there were so many people that looked as if they were cloned, or why there was a huge shit-hole in the middle of nowhere, unless the rumor about the things appearing near them is true.
Making sure I returned every book I took out, back on the shelves I took them from, I then headed towards the librarian to bid him farewell and ask the most important question I have had this whole time, as soon as I approached him, he looked up and I started talking,
“Thanks, I found most of what I was looking for.” I lied.
“There was a single question that came to my mind and I couldn’t find an answer for.
Mind if I ask you? I really hope you could help.”
“Sure go ahead”. He looked surprised.
“Why are there no females?”
“I don’t understand your question, I didn’t catch the last word you said…”
Wondering what was wrong with my question, maybe the question sounded rude, maybe there is actually a different word for females in this place, or maybe he couldn’t talk about it.
I decided to repeat myself in a more polite manner.
“Sorry, I’ll repeat myself, if it is possible, could you please tell me why are there no females in this city?”
The librarian looked lost, not knowing what to say, certainly he doesn’t understand what I mean by the word ‘Females’. He took out a dictionary, probably thinking it was some sort of a rarely used word he have never heard before, there are many words you may or may not know and will never be used in a conversation in your entire life…
Flipping through the pages of the dictionary, he reached the section on which the words started with ‘Fe’, looking through it again and again, not finding anything. He handed me the dictionary.
“Maybe you confused a certain word, try skimming through the dictionary, maybe you’ll find the correct word for what you’re trying to ask about.”
I took the dictionary and took a seat beside a large table.
I opened the dictionary and went to the word index, reading each and every word looking for words I don’t know, I may not seem like it, but I am quite well educated even though it was self education…
(Word Index: The pages that list all the words and which page they are on, without the definition.)
After reading through the index three times to make sure I haven’t missed anything, I have come to a realization!! The words “Gender”, “Male” and “Female”, are missing!! MISSING!!
None of the words I didn’t know were anything close to them!!
As a healthy (I think) young man, It hit me like a hammer! “Are there no females in this world?!”
