《Phantom Path》Chapter 46: Troubled

The village of folks gone back to their old, regular day, as gone is the presence of the Jacqawin who troubled their peace. Sounds a sigh from Bjørn, the boy who wishes for both himself and the warrior he relates with to find peace in hoping he'll get the chance to put the criminal to justice, Nora coming by him after going out of her way to get them both something to drink, a worried smile on her face as she observes him, Ezek entertaining the teacher and children of the school with a show of his gun-wielding skills, earning himself these little fans whom he can't help but smile at, Nahshon on another side of the village, accompanying the one who piques his interest back to her office in the clinic, everything about her being well classy; the way her hair is, her clothing, her lipstick, her walk.
"Do you always stare at everybody like that?" She asks him, Nahshon averting his eyes to the sky, almost choking on his own spit.
"So you were a vampire, huh?" He smiles.
"Yes, I am. Does it scare you?" Isabela looks at him, her smile now exposed from her mask now removed like a threat that troubles his heart feeling weak.
"No...." He stiffens up. "Wait, well, you seem really powerful, why aren't you helping with what's been happening?"
"What? The kidnaps, the monsters running wild? If a doctor like myself has to go into battle, what sense would it be of soldiers existing? Not my problem. I'm sure they can handle their job just fine without me," She questions.
"Oh..." Nahshon sounds, agreeing with her words, but wondering if she is as good of a person as he imagined. "But at the same time, they could use all the help they can, you know?"
"Yes, I suppose so. But, I am a doctor, I too have responsibilities. I heal people. I'm already doing my part, aren't I?" She challenges, Nahshon nodding in agreement. "Now, let's get to the point of why I called you to my office"
"Okay," Nahshon answers. awkwardly nodding his head.
"You've piqued my interest, Nahshon," She sets head to rest in her hand, the boy feeling within his chest a beat skipped, looking at her eyes that perceive down to his hands.
"W-What do you mean?" Nahshon questions, a little chuckle awoken from his nervous self.
"I'm not sure myself...I'll have to draw more of your blood to have a better understanding before I give you a briefing. What was drawn this morning probably won't be enough," She tells him, the boy growing disappointed in himself thinking it would be something else as she turns to get out her syringe.
"...Is it because of what happened when I was in the sanctuary?"
"No, this seems to have always been the case for you," She tells him, the boy lifting an eyebrow in wondering what she's hiding from him that has Isabela giggling. "You don't have to worry. As I've said, I'm not too sure on what it is, so I'll give you an answer after I do more extensive research"
"Oh okay," Nahshon nods, silence filling the room, offering up his hand that she slowly injects the needle into.
"So, it's obvious you're not from around here, where are you from exactly?" She breaks that silence.
"...Ziona," He tells her, wondering why he lied.
"Ah yes, I could tell from how strong your accent is from time to time," She tells him, the boy thinking he'll sound crazy if he told her the truth.

"Sorry, it's that obvious, huh?"
"Why are you apologizing? My accent shows quite a lot as well, don't you think so?"
"Yeah...You're from Manuela?" He questions, the country of Spain popping up in his head, her Latin accent one he embraces.
"Hmm, it's the first someone has guessed right," She giggles, finishing up with a band-aid by the first from earlier. "Yes! People normally say Leartele"
"Hmm," He says, understanding that country to be the equivalent of Italy.
"Long ago, an old woman told me Verencia was the county to be in if one sought out the truth"
"Really? How?"
"Well, she never told me to be exact, but...." Isabela stops, smiling as she grabs a glass and her wine. "Since being here for months, it seems the more I'm here, the more apparent it becomes; these fjords and mountains, how the sun seems to never sleep, the people, and their adorable children, they seem to have inspired many of those who are considered brilliant minds. And it seems it may be the same case for me"
"I see," Nahshon nods, pondering on her words.
"And what of you, Mr.Thompson?"
"Well...Let's just say I had no choice but to come here, I think," He says, remembering the Overseer telling him he surely had a choice.
"May I ask why?"
"Well, just like you, I have to find myself...my own truth," He explains, watching as her lips touch the glass of wine she drinks.
"I see," She says, her lips folded at the taste of her drink, catching the wandering eyes of the boy once more. "Don't worry, it's not blood"
"Huh, vampires could eat and drink normal stuff?"
"Well yes, we are normal people like you after all," She challenges, giggling as she sees Nahshon scratching his head with a sorry look on his face. "Well, most of them, atleast. But think of it as eating candy or chewing on a straw"
"Ah...and do you drink blood?" He asks, Isabela in silence as she looks at him.
"Yes...of course I do," Isabela answers, Nahshon nodding, his head stiffened as she draws closer with her continuous smiling that reveals her sharp fangs, almost feeling the presence of her breath tingling on his skin. "Especially of curious little boys like yourself"
"Hmm..." He hesitantly nods, hearing her laugh as she braces away from his personal space.
"I am only kidding. I only drink the blood of animals," She tells him, the boy's neck seemingly feeling itchy as he nods. "That is the only thing that can truly satisfy us vampires"
"...Have you drank the blood of a person?" He persists, seeing as she goes silent once more, her eyes to the watch on her wrist, looking up to the boy with eyes he can't read.
"Well, Mr.Thompson, you should check in with me after I've given you a call. That won't be a problem, right? That I have your contact," She challenges.
"No, ma'am," He answers, feeling awkward as she had completely ignored his question.

"What are you kids up to?" Ezek appears to Nora and Bjørn.
"Ah, you're both back," Nora asks, turning to see Nahshon as well.
"Yeah," Nahshon sits, Ezek grinding as he hears Nahshon sigh.
"So you're into vampire girls, huh?" He challenges.
"...Tch!" Nahshon smiles, shaking his head.
"Hey, do your thing! But maybe...you should learn to be a man first," Ezek tells him.

"It's nothing like that, dude," Nahshon tells him, fanning his hand at him, sighing once more, wishing he wasn't so awkward of a person.
"Hey, chill out, I'm kidding," Ezek laughs, throwing candy wrapping at the lad, Nora chuckling at their antics, looking over to Bjørn still sulking with his eyes to the ground.
"Okay, that's it!" Nora gets up, her hands planting onto Bjørn's face that she squishes, looking into his eyes. "What is wrong with you?"
"I...I'm fine," Bjørn simply tells her.
"No! You're not alright! You're obviously holding something back! You've been like this ever since the Jacqawin came here earlier. What's going on??" She challenges, rattling his head for an answer, the boy looking over to Nahshon and Ezek, bringing his eyes to the ground once more.
"Oi!" Ezek calls, Bjørn's head raised from the ground once more. "If there's something on your mind, then say it. It ain't gonna be good if you lose the chance to when you clearly wanted to, so best you say it now. And if you don't...I'll kill you, right here"
"Ezek," Nahshon chuckles, seeing as he summons a handgun.
"What the hell?" Nora joins the laughter, three of them hearing as Bjørn also joins, pulled from his sour mood, calming down to a sigh as he holds Nora's hands.
"...There's something I need to tell you guys," He starts, taking a deep breath. "It's the day I went to visit Alps..."
The three being around him, they become all ears, but frightened they become from what they've learned, Bjørn explaining what he heard at the meeting of the commanders and King; the ex-commander who betrayed his country, the enemy hosting an army of around 80,000, the coming war, including the reveal of how his father became the way he is, and how the Jacqawin is also connected.
"...B-By the gods," Nora's breath shakes, her hands covering her mouth as she drops back in her seat.
"N-No way. It was true...this was all connected all along," Ezek stands completely appalled.
"T...They're turning people into monsters??" Nahshon's voice shakes, feeling as his chest tightens, hearing the beating of his upset heart, reminded of that fateful day, the day Christopher cried to him to save his sister, reminded of all the emotions he felt as if his consciousness had gone back in time to that very moment he saw the goblins laughing. "They...were sacrificing people for war..."
"Bjørn...your dad...I didn't know..." Nora clasps her hands.
"Yeah...what makes it worse, is that this murderer is still out there. She's hurting even more people, and she's enjoying it as she's doing it," Bjørn says, his fist clenched, the three hearing as he begins chuckling like he's lost it. "I get it now. I see why the Jacqawin became the way he is...she destroyed everything he loved, and now he grew into someone who can't even trust anybody because of what happened. 2009? He was probably 16 at the time, and he suffered by himself, all on his own. I get it now..."
"Bjørn?" Nora calls, her hand on his cheek.
"I'm upset! Why does everybody always treat me like I don't have a will of my own? Am I to just stand aside and do nothing because of my age? I don't want to be someone who's weak. I want justice for my dad, even if it kills me. I want her to feel the same pain she brought onto my dad. Tch...is this...hatred?" Bjørn looks up to her, Nora being able to do nothing but only embrace him tightly as she sees the agony in his eyes, the two boys in silence as they still comprehend his words.

Mrs.Solberg smiles proud of her artsy plate, smiley faces made out of fruits, one she gives her husband to enjoy, Fredrik, whose eyes are stuck on a channel showcasing a train just doing its job of going through the land of Verencia on live television, Mrs.Solberg caught with an apple piece in her mouth by Bjørn who enters, greeting her son who she realizes gives off an entirely different vibe, his eyes dark, and mouth screwed.
"Hey, Mom..." He hails her, slowly closing the door.
"Hey, kid, how was your day?" She asks.
"Nothing much"
"Did you finish your checkup? I wonder why you have to go so far though. They should let you do it somewhere closer"
"It's fine, mom"
"Hung out with your friends today?"
"Yeah...," He answers, his mom now sure there's something up with him, seeing as he stands still at the door.
"Hmmm," She sounds, picking up the plate. "fruits? They're apples in it, your favourite?"
"I'm good...I'm not hungry," He tells her, and so they fade to silence, Fredrik in the living room focused on the television with munching on his fruits, Mrs.Solberg growing even more worried, hands fidgeting on her apron.
"Wh-"
"What happened to dad?" Bjørn questions. "What really happened to Dad?"
"Bjørn..." His mother calls, sighing as she looks at him, turning back to the counter where begins cutting more fruit. "Honey, we already discussed this. Your father was on a quest and got into an accident and hit his head-"
"You're not telling me what really happened, mom!!" Bjørn drops his sword, his hands on his head as in his eyes, are the feeling of tears he holds back. "The killer is still out there?"
"W-What?" Mrs.Solberg's voice shakes.
"Dad went to a village to stop an attack of monsters, and a vampire did this to him! Why are you still acting like you don't know anything??! How can you live knowing that they're still out there hurting people...?" He challenges, calling down sadness in mother's heart, as comes a flow of tears from her eyes.
"Bjørn...I've been angry about it too. Nothing hurts me more than to know that the killer was not brought to justice and that they're still out there causing more pain. But it's been nine years...please, for the sake of your father, let it go...please, it's all I ask you to do," She cries, walking up to her son with a soft embrace.
"N-No...how many more must suffer. Many lost all they had because of them," Bjørn states, an image of the Jacqawin coming to his head. "I...can't just let go. They are people out there who have lost everything..."
"Bjørn...?" His dad appears, his expression sad, wondering what is going on as he meets eyes with his son, his hand motioning as he calls him over.
"Tch!" Bjørn braces his mom away, quickly rushing out the door as fast as he can.
"Bjørn!!" His mom calls, the boy not ceasing to her call, keeping his pace at front.

A Standard Model of Magic
The world ended, and magic came back. The part our parents didn't expect, was for Science to break on reentry. Twenty years after the apocalypse, with our nations dismantled and hidden continents unearthed, a new generation has grown up in the wreckage of 21st century civilization. For us, the fantastic is at our doorstep and we have had no choice but to fight back. Meanwhile, the laws of nature bend and break at the whims of immortal gods, all of which are now dead and none of which are content to stay that way. But we cannot afford to give up. We are the stewards of a rewritten century, in which a little luck and a whole lot of magic might make anything possible – maybe even a world better than the one we lost. A Standard Model of Magic is a complete overhaul of my old story A Storm in the Fall. I'm afraid I was unhappy with the LitRPG elements, which I don't mind reading, but I apparently loath writing. Sorry. Once I'd made the choice to decouple the story from the OF that inspired it and reconfigure the magic system to my satisfaction, little of the original plotline survived. I will be salvaging most of my original characters, and I will keep some elements which are endemic to the genre, but that is all. I don't have an update schedule which I can commit to yet, but I will try to maintain a weekly pace.(This is currently RoyalRoad exclusive, since I'm lazy. If you find it posted elsewhere, it wasn't me and it wasn't with permission) If you're interested, I've set up a discord.

After All
This is not my story. My story was of a world I forged by my raw will, and of you, my children, forged of my dreams. That story has long since ended. Our world was not alone. Another deity came from beyond my sight, and despite our resistance rent our world asunder. In the end, all was lost and you were gone. That I survived your passing is a testament to the cruelty of existence; I cannot forgive existence for the monstrous crime of making me go on without you. This is the story of a new world, forged by the hands of fools. That it is made from the bones of that which I most hated will bring this place no absolution. In the fullness of time, I will seize the reins of this new narrative, and I shall end it. You are lost to me, my children. I will make a funeral pyre of all reality for you, and be with you in oblivion after all. --- DocSumac here. This is a story that has been rattling around in my head for years. It's not complete, but I'm not going to let it haunt me anymore. I'm uploading what is ready, and I'll add more as I can. --- Addendum May 20, 2020: I've added the Sex tag. Not because of actual smut, but becuase of what will probably devolve into an ongoing parade of dick jokes. No point denying my nature.
