《Phantom Path》Chapter 40: The Demon Leaf
Advertisement
A war broke loose, men clash swords and women wrestle, the sky crying above them, flocks of birds watching the terror below as soldiers of both sides war, their shriek like a monster growing larger, their ears curling in agony from their own battle. The enemies faltered, slowly they are pushed back as the Verencian soldiers advance in wanting to get through. Slowly but surely they make progress, a line zipping across the sky and hooked onto a building in one's impatience, it is the Demon Leaf who flies his way atop the rooftops, Tomrik hissing in wanting a grappling hook for himself, jealous of his fellow captain. But as his move gave him space to breathe, he went not alone, as several of Kalf's henchmen have followed him up there, surrounding him in a matter of minutes in him wanting to make his way to Adrian's side, stopping in the middle of his progress with a hiss of his teeth.
"ADDs. Of course..." He sighs, grabbing from his bag a kunai he holds firmly, his eyes counting every one of them at front, and ears mapping the ones whose feet swipe against the shingles behind him, a spin of his blade held at neck's height, all the enemies comprehending as two of their own necks have been slashed in their charge to the awareness of his instincts, frightened by his merciless strikes, as they did not consider the Verencian soldiers to kill in this battle, never hearing the screams of death from their allies who fell.
"Argg!! Stevie!!" One security shouts his dead friend‘s name, all their feet collectively charging towards Li, blood spilt across their faces, seeing as one another fall with slashes in their chests, open bellies and faces terrorized, seeing as Li continues his advance to Adrian, hearing as thunder breaks through the campus. "Get him!!"
Their guns loaded, streaks of gunpowder set cross Li, the captain bouncing from wall to wall, roof to roof in evading them, turning back with his own gifts to them, bombs that take them off their feet as he skillfully gets back on track, Adrian finally in his sight, whipping from within his robe a sawed-off shotgun that he aims towards the enemies that work in ambushing his friend from above, their faces met with him and two large barrels that smoke their faces off, their corpses landing at ground level by him who makes a grand entrance as Adrian had finished off his own battles.
"Zhang?" Adrian calls, relief in seeing him.
"You owe me one," Li smiles.
"Hm," Adrian shakes his head, his hand lifted, the feeling of wrapped leather gripped in his hands, looking to the one who had thrown it scratching his head.
"God damn it. Not again," Yuejin sighs in disappointment.
"It's the foreigner," Li states, smiling as he rubs his nose. "Go on ahead. I'll take care of this one"
"Yeah?" Adrian nods. "Alright then. Catch you later"
"So! You're the vice around here, huh?" Li asks Yuejin as Adrian runs off, dead bodies beneath Li's feet while Yuejin puts his hands in his pocket, comprehending that this man is very skilled as he also takes a look atop the rooftops.
"You can say that. I am like his advisor. Pays me well," Yuejin responds, unfixing his tie and cracking his neck. "A captain, I assume"
"Yes, I am Li. Zhang Li. You?"
"You may call me Yuejin. Are you from here?"
"No, I'm not actually. Born and raised in Qin. Left and came here around 15 and joined the army by the time I was 17. And here I am, captain at 21. Awesome life story, huh?"

"Yes. Very...'awesome'. I see. I could tell you were trained under great masters. You haven't lost your native tongue, have you?"
"No. It's still here. Fresh as new," Li tells him, speaking in his native tongue of Qinese.
"Excellent," Yuejin responds in the same tongue, laughing as he slides from underneath his sleeves two knives. "Well. Shall we begin? You must be eager to cut my flesh?"
"Are you kidding?" Li grins, set in his stance with his Kunai bloody. "I wanna see what I can make from that fur of yours"
"Tch!" Yuejin hisses, both their feet pushed off the ground, running against each other with their blades grinding against one another, sparks off their weapons into the air as they run around the battlefield in trying to kill each other, their movements fluid like leaves through the air, both thinking they've cornered the other, only to be swiped off their game plan to start all over, Li blowing a round from his shotgun to an oncoming chair, looking down on a knife coming at his neck, quickly vanishing with Yuejin feeling as his body begins to twirl, kicked by the captain over a table, Li looking down at his arm to see that he has suffered a small cut, sighing as if it was a little lower, his wrist would be cut open.
And getting up, Yuejin groans in returning to the fight, brushing himself off, chuckling as his eyes meet Zhang Li's, their battle gone silent, hearing the chaos on the outside, lighting being discharged, followed by thunder that echoes across. Yuejin sends more knives flying, Li dodging them by near proximity, in a stands-still as he sees it would be a bad idea to move forward, so he goes back, taking his time in exiting through the window with backing up to the large space outside, leaving Yuejin no choice but to follow, Li shrugging his shoulders in seeing his opponent's bothered expression. By the count of two, before his eyes, Yuejin counts three bombs he quickly evades from, and still he's caught, one of his legs suffering a burn that he rolls on, suffering a critical hit to the jaw that sends him flying into a wall by his opponent who suddenly appears before him. Nevertheless, his opponent gets up, his tie from his neck and onto his burnt leg.
"You're not bad, mister. The only people that have ever come this far are my friends. Not bad at all," Li says, Yuejin's breath shivering, his face in disbelief, as he watches at the cuts on Li simply burn up, disappearing like they were never there. "Nope. Before you ask, I didn't slip myself some potions or anything"
"You would have to have a large amount of control over your mana to even heal just two wounds, something that's just been theorized, and he did it with all of his? The only type of people who have such abilities otherwise are warlocks, vampires..." Yuejin says, looking into Zhang Li's grin, not seeing any signs of fangs. "You're a demon...? That must be it"
"Who knows. I could probably be a unicorn too. What are you gonna do now, Yuejin?" He asks, Yuejin then turning his attention to the crest on his white robe.
"You wear the crest of a green lotus...? Ngh!" Yuejin sounds, his eyes going blank, calming down as he begins thinking logically.
"What's wrong?" Li smiles.
"You are of the great Zhang Bao's blood-The Demon King!? The Highsword of Qin??" Yuejin quickly gets up, understanding that his opponent is more of a threat than he thought. "Are you another son of his? I've never heard of you"

"His grandson actually. And he's ex-demon king. If you want, I'll have him sign your autograph and give it to you after we're finished. How does that sound?" Li suggests, Yuejin backing up against the wall, sliding down to a sit down where he pops out a potion.
"Tch...You must be kind enough to allow me to regain my strength like you've done," Yuejin challenges, Li giving him the go-ahead to drink his red potion, healing all the wounds he had suffered, getting up in a groaning stretch, stance changed as together comes his hands in forming signs, and appear silhouettes from out his shadow, a pair of hounds that begin circling their prey Zhang Li, Yuejun smirking as he believes Zhang Li may be lying.
One after the other, they cross him, their fangs reaching for his neck, Li saved only by his reflex of spinning, his hands forming a shield that keeps Yeujin's knife attack from also reaching his throat, reaching out a palm which Yuejin counters, his hand met with his, forming another sign of hounds that jump from both their shadows, almost claiming Li's head. Pushing back and getting his stance once more, he evades from the bites of their fangs, one becoming a victim of his kunai he flings with a paper that combusts into flames, swiping another paper onto his second that disperse into thin air, casting a release of its summoning. Again he dodges Yuejin's attempt, this time saving his sight, flinging himself over his head and behind, forcing Yuejin into dispelling his summons as they were in mid-jump to catch Li before he got behind him. And so he drops his knife, backing Li into a wall with strikes of his elbow in his sides to set himself free, Li suffering a punch to the face and stomach, but saving himself from an overhead attack, pushing Yuejin off with then pouncing backway onto the wall with both his legs striking his opponent in the chest, Yuejin dashing back, his hands this time weaving a different set of signs, gushing from his mouth a cloud of flames Zhang Li rolls away from.
Now it has become a battle of pure combat of highly skilled fighters, their hand movements vicious like snakes and kicks like organic blades, both grown to an understanding of each other's abilities just through this fight. And to a stop they come, their hands locked together, and feet moving around in trying to get the upper hand, set free one becomes, Li pushes back, swiping from his back the sawed-off shotgun he aims at Yuejin, with his eyes then turning to his left to a giant fist that nears his face, vanishing like a mirage out of harm's way, chuckling as he sees as hundreds of security guards have popped out of nowhere.
"Alright then. How about you tell them this is a 1v1 match and they should go back to wherever they came from, huh?" Li suggests to Yuejin, scratching his head to this predicament. "Y-Yuejin?"
"...Hm...I am glad you all have to come to my aid...keep him busy," Yuejin commands them, fixing his collar with him, closing this fight, walking away with a wave to his opponent. "This was a good fight, supposed grandchild of Zhang Bao. I am honoured to have been your opponent. But I must attend to other business. Goodbye..."
In a flash of a step, three guards are cut down, the rest of them quickly charging Li in stopping his progress towards their boss, their numbers overbearing for him to get close, as magical projectiles fly, guns fire off and fists destroy trying to strike him. So he takes out his grappling hook, ziplining himself towards a building, only to be tackled mid-air, quickly getting back his stance as he works to defend himself from numerous attacks that threaten his life. And awakens a frustration within him, seeing beyond his battle that of Yuejin walking away calmly with his hands tucked in his pockets, sensing around him the hundred of guards that pounce to get him, sighing, as into his robe he reaches. And hearing as silence falls after what seemed like horrifying screams, a crawling feeling of fear reaches Yuejin who slowly stops his pace, as on his fur he feels as electricity runs through it, feeling a sudden rush of fear. He turns around, his neck stiff as he does so, eyes shaking as before him, are the hundreds of guards only cut down to two fear-stricken ones that refuse to fight any longer, around them many gears of the fallen ones that have seem to just disappear from out of them, one of them running towards Yuejin, tears in her eyes as she desperately runs away.
"B-Boss!!!" She reaches out her hand to him, Yuejin witnessing the abnormality of her mouth stretched wide open, tearing as she gargles on her blood as she still stretches for him but with no more movement, and before his eyes, he watches as her fresh, young skin fades to pitch black, her eyes gone bloodshot, and formed are cracks of fire that erupts from within her, throwing her into a blaze like Hell itself has called her as she screams in excruciating agony, all of it coming to an end with a leaf of steel flung from out her mouth and back to its owner, leaving her to be only dust that dirties the tattered clothes she wore.
Blood flashing from off its metal skin, it whips back into the hand of its owner who takes a breather after all the fighting he's done, the last of the guards sitting in total terror at Li who returns the attention.
"Run along, buddy. Go on," Li commands him, the guard taking no time to run away from his sight, a wide smile across his face as he lives to see another day, and chuckling to himself, Li lifts the tip of his chain, the metal leaf that has done all of this damage. "Pretty cool, isn't it? My grandfather had it made for me. This chain was forged by some of the greatest blacksmiths known in Hell. It was made from a tree that bore poisonous fruit, that if eaten, your skin would change colour and you would be engulfed in flames that would scorch every single drop of blood within you. One cut and you would catch a fever so high, that your brain will simply tell your body to just self destruct. And that would be it. You'd be dead. If I were you...I'd be afraid just like he was"
"Y-You...bastard" Yuejin mutters, his fangs gritted, his eyes gone wild, growling at who threatens him, as he steps into a new stance, on all fours, a knife equipped in his mouth, beneath the sky turned dark and thunder like a pulse of a heart, with a show of lightning flared above, and the wind chilled and heavy. "I'll kill you"
"...Huh?" Li sounds, genuinely surprised, as before his eyes, Yuejin vanishes, quickly lifting his hand with his feet lifted off the ground, twirled into the air by the rugged force his opponent attacks with, astonished by Yuejinn's speed and strength doubled, Li dodging his next strikes more wild, but very much coordinated. "Tch! How could I forget you were demihuman? After all, you acted all so elegant!"
The dangling of Zhang Li's chain ringing in Yuejin's ears, quickly he backs up on all fours, vanishing once again, zig-zagging across Li with a strike that bloodies his side, his skin cut by the beastman's claws. And with quick thinking, Li catches Yuejin in his barrage, chain wrapped around his leg, he swings him into a seating of chairs and a roundtable, Yuejin quickly flipping back into his stance. A cocky bastard, Yuejin hisses, watching as Li taunts him by striking his chain against the ground, a show of flames like a monster blowing fire from the head of the leaf, the sounds of its dangles twitching the ears of his opponent gone mad, a mix of rage and fear. He controls his emotions, as now his knife is equipped in his hand. Yuejin runs up to his enemy, his body low, hearing the woosh through the wind as Li flings his chain towards him, Yuejin dodging it in a close call, swiping his knife against his leg which the demon steps back from. And like a wheel, Zhang Li's spins his chain, Yuejin taking no chance to deflect his attacks, avoiding every swing of that chain for his dear life, jumping into the air, as by his feet is a bomb Li throws, avoiding the explosion just in time, throwing down a knife that Li easily dodges, the demon smiling, his face menacing, Yuejin's heart gone cold, as in his ears, rings his coming death, the chain that swipes across him while stiffened in mid-air, thunder drumming in his ears, dropping to the ground with his breath heavy and his eyes bloodshot, groaning in pain to the long slash across his stomach, it burns so intense, that it is enough for him to think to end his own life.
"Whew! That one looks nasty! How about you call it quits now, huh?" Li suggests, spit drooling from Yuejin's mouth, comprehending that his opponent can control the level of poison inflicted upon his victims, as his skin remains fresh, not engulfed by flames.
Nevertheless, he still holds his knife firmly, his vision somewhat blurry, and ears ringing, he refuses to lose, swiping a bottle from out his pocket, swallowing its substance. With that his eyes bounce to the sky, hearing the rush of his heartbeat growing stronger, the pain of the slash dimming. He rushes towards his opponent on all fours, his claws and knife swung towards Zhang Li's face, missing his chance by the increasing lag of his focus, suffering another slash, a deep one under his arm that has him drop his knife. But still he fights, adrenaline pumping through his veins, his claws flashing like lightning towards Zhang Li, wanting to slash him up like a need in his life, letting out a shout that fades into nothing, eyes falling blank, as in his fight for his life, he hears the slowing down of his heartbeat, and black falls his eyes, but not completely, seeing a light that shines within the distance, seeing a silhouette he knows.
"B-Bao Zhai?" He calls the name of the one he misses, his wife, seeing another who hugs at her leg, his daughter. "Biyu..."
By their names, he drops to his knees, stretching his arm out with his eyes gone hollow, sensing as the feeling in his legs go missing, dropping him onto his belly. And so Li puts away his chain, looking at Yuejin in his dire state, kneeling by his side.
"You...demon. How dare you? I-Is this the effect of your attack?" Yeujin coughs in his native tongue, blood dripping from his mouth.
"No, it's not. It means you want to live because they're people who you want to return to. Best you sleep now. Don't let me have to actually kill you..." Li responds, Yuejin dropping his hand to his words, turning over on his back with his eyes pointed at him, his breathing heavy and destroyed to the poison in his body, closing his eyes as he continues to suffer, but no longer he does, as by the lift of a hand sign by Li, the poison takes it time in being released from his body, going silent the moment every ounce is cleared out.
"Hm..." Li sounds, his hand placed against Yuejin's neck, confirming that he still has a pulse, sighing as he rests beside him, his wounds sizzling as they heal, feeling as the earth shakes from the thunder that beats. "Sound's like it's getting even more intense over there"

Wander West, in Shadow
BOOK 1 COMPLETED A young wizard journeys west, through dark forests and dangerous lands, searching for something. Accompanied by a wild witch who has secrets of her own, they come across terrible creatures, hauntings, cursed villages, and memories from their past. Who else will they meet along their journey, and to find what he is looking for, how far will the wizard have to wander west? NOTE: The above synopsis is intentionally written to be as spoiler-free as possible. If you would like a more in-detail synopsis, one that contains minor spoilers, please check out the "Synopsis" chapter at the beginning of this fiction. If you read and enjoy, please leave a rating or review! FORMERLY TITLED: THE GLIMMERLING This story was formerly titled "The Glimmerling", because the first part was a short story of that title; it has since been expanded upon, thus the title change. Chapters 1-8 (30k words) are the first 'arc', if you want to get a feel for the story. To give some context on the setting: Magic is a bit weaker in this story than you might be used to, and we start off following some relatively new magic users. For some perspective, being able to light a campfire with magic is considered relatively advanced for someone who is the age of the main character. Magic can become very powerful - and there are some examples of powerful wizards within this story - but it's not where the main characters are yet. Part of the story is about following them as they learn more about magic. Enemies are also very dangerous, and running, hiding, or trying to talk their way out of a dangerous situation is often a better choice than fighting for the characters. While I have added tags for traumatizing content, sexuality, violence, swearing, etc. I try to avoid super-explicit descriptions of these things. But they are part of the story.

Hi, this is my first novel because writing looks fun and I tend to be incredibly bored a lot. I don't know if I'm any good so please tell me what I'm doing wrong as a review Chapters will come out whenever I feel like a reponsible person PS: I am a very indescisive person so the synopsis will change a lot, have fun with that. PPS: I am terrible at writing synopsises. So I'm reading this a few years later and my god its shocking no one shot me in the head when I was younger. But uh, people have been DMing me asking if this story has stopped, which it has. (why was I allowed on the internet during my EdgeLord Phase, I don't know, but someone really should have stopped me) But thanks to all the people who read this, it really does mean a lot.

Being Frank
**Author's Note** This was my 7th attempt at writing this story. I've worked on the story since 20 years ago but my writing style and skills haven't been satisfactory to me. So after working as a digital content manager for 2 years and after a very long deliberation I've decided to drop this 7th attempt and start on my 8th attempt. This 8th attempt will be the same story but starting from a different point in the timeline of my story. Thank you for your support on this 7th try, it is only due to your reviews and comments that I have the confidence to work hard on my 8th attempt. I started on my 8th attempt with the intention that my 8th attempt will be the final one as I'm a lot more confident and content with my where my writing skills are currently at. Volume 1 In a world filled with magic, war, giants and other awesome races lives Frank. Who being Frank is somewhat of a hermit. He loves to tinker with various contraptions trying to bend the laws of magic to his will. Through his successes he has garnered some attention; unwanted attention. If only that was all there was to it. .... war is coming Volume 2 Frank was born as a normal child, born in a normal family. His father was a scientist and was busy working most days. This is also why Frank was especially excited when his father decided to take an extended holiday to travel to Asia with his family. But their trip turns out to be one from which there is no going back. Writer's notice: I will continue to participate in the NaNoWriMo every November till I finish all that I have planned to write. I expect to have this story finished in 14 years approximately.Update:I was unhappy with how I had first written the first and second volume but am leaving the editing and finishing of those volumes till later and have started on the third one. The chronological order so far is 2-1-3. Might fix that too later.
