《Phantom Path》Chapter 39: Old Friend
Advertisement
A collection of memories awaking as children play about, envious of them having friends at their age when he didn't, with his bike by his side as he strolls through the streets of Drammen, a city by the banks of Vestland and Strongcastle, a place where his life completely changed after he moved there, a reminder to him of where he started from, remembering when he was just a troubled teen that had already gotten his first set of tattoos as he goes by an old place he used to hang out by himself as he smoked and drank, by railings where he could overlook the city.
"Huh...I was fourteen at the time, wasn't I?" Adrian sounds, seeing his old self by these railings, as one day, someone decided to approach him, his younger self looking up to a man that was great in his eyes back then, to Kalf smiling as he told of him beating up people that were from his guild, reminded of when the man laughed at his coldness, telling him that joining his guild would be a good way of making friends, telling him that not everybody is his enemy.
And to another place he stops, a restaurant busy in the summer day, Adrian remembering it as the Blue Dogs headquarters before it was transformed into what it is now, the place where he really got close to Kalf and others, also remembering seeing all the messed up things that were done within it. Drugs, harassment and exploitation, his eyes had seen it all, his young self of back then knowing it was all wrong, something that has torn at his soul whenever he pretended not to see them. And that's when it all changed for him, his eyes following a kid running across the building, reminded of himself, as that day, soldiers from Vestland raided the headquarters and he fought and ran to escape, stopped by another who came before him, eventually losing the battle to the man who brought him to his knees, looking at his black leather shoes like Vernon's, and dark locs wrapped in a bun, as he was told by him that it's not too late in choosing another path, Adrian looking back at that memory in hissing at his words.
"Fucking cunt," Adrian calls the man, off to another site, to another restaurant facing the streams and valleys of Vestland, going by a specific seat, the table still marked by his edging of long ago, sitting down as he begins viewing the scenery, reminiscing on a goal Kalf once told him before it all fell apart, one day wanting to own a huge villa up in Vestland and live like a king, with no worries, with no hard work, a dream he believed to be in goodwill.
And reminded is he of another who sat at this very table, the tapping of his finger on the wooden frame a rhythm still stuck in Adrian's head after many years, remembering his dark locs that were highlighted by the beams of light that coloured it brown, but steady he put his focus once more, trying to remember the exact location of where Kalf would be, his eyes shifting to the television atop the cash register playing a movie about a wealthy man stuck on an unknown island with his mistress, Adrian's eyes lighting up as he jumps out of his seat, back onto his bike with riding out of the city, heading back into Vestland and going beyond it, by a long road stretching across the sea, seeing many islands offshore. There he opens a space within his bike, pulling from it a map he opens, seeing all the listed names of these islands before him, home to their own cities and attractions, except one, the one he sees far off in the east by itself, concluding that it may be a private island, a place fully owned by the buyer, which means no soldier could patrol there and no ordinary citizen could see anything going on. There he sighs, closing his eyes to the thought of all these signs.

"You bastard...you really didn't leave? After all the wrongs you did," Adrian says, as now he begins riding to the east, finding himself upon a hill after sneaking his way past the entrance and into the island, coming to a clearing where he crouches in having extra security in not being seen, looking upon a large estate of many things with his phone as his eyes, recording everything he observes.
A private military he sees, men in uniform with weapons by their side, trucks driving around the campus that stack crates, with maids in tight dressing of short skirts. And with a very unique presence of his own, he sees another, his skin of fur and his suit very elegant, saluted by security as they pass him stopping by another who joins him on his walk, Adrian's fist immediately clenched to the sight of this one whose presence burns the skin of his soul.
"Kalf..." Adrian mutters, looking at Kalf laughing as the soldiers pass him in saluting as he goes by his pool, the captain witnessing as he lifts what seems to be the very same pills going around the country. "Still crappy as ever, huh...?"
And so his senses tingle, Kalf stopping in his tracks with his friend asking him of what is wrong, looking up to the hill beside his estate, to see nothing but trees, smiling as he then continues on with his walk.
"It seems we'll have to prepare for a big event, my friend Yuejin," Kalf chuckles.
"And what of our businesses going down?" Yuejin questions, scratching his furry chin. "It is only a matter of time until they come for the ones in Vestland, our more prosperous ones"
"It will all blow over after a while, this country is far too soft for strongmen like us...it's not like it didn't happen before," Kalf tells him, Yuejin raising his eyebrow in wanting to call bullshit on his words. "Instead of worrying, we should focus on building even more! Our power in Britannia is growing even stronger as well. We have no time for feeling down for what we've lost"
"S-Sir!" A guard approaches them, saluting to both of them. "This morning, about 12 of our businesses were raided by soldiers. Here, in Vestland"
"Huh...?" Kalf sounds, his lips shifting into many shapes, bursting into a wide smile as he begins laughing hysterically. "Come, my friend! This is getting rather exciting!"
"Will we escape by sea?" Yuejin asks.
"No. I'm sure the banks of the country have been locked already," He figures.
"Tch! For seven of our more successful businesses to be raided on the same day must mean they were watching for a long time...which must mean that they know of your existence within the country, Hagen. You've been exposed," Yuejin frankly tells him, their informer awkwardly standing between their scary characters in wanting to leave.
"You," Kalf points to the informer.
"Yes, sir," The soldier answers.
"Am I incompetent to you?" Kalf asks.
"Huh?...n-no, sir"
"I'm your boss, right? And I pay you well enough?"
"Yes, sir. Absolutely"
"Good. Now, here's what you'll do for me: you're going to rally the others, and tell them how much you love me, then after that, you'll tell them what you just told me. Get ready, my loyal servant, a war is coming"
"Heh?"
"You can run along now, little one," Kalf tells him, the informer immediately running off, finally relieved from their overbearing presence, Kalf looking to the sky in anticipation of what is to happen next.

And back to the headquarters, soldiers keeping single file as one presses his way in, they look at Adrian who's eyes spell wrath as he walks down the corridor, opening the conference door to Commander Vernon and the captains of the raid.
"What have you found out soldier, soldier?" Vernon asks.
"He's really behind all of this," Adrian tells them, casting the recording from his phone to the television in the room.
On the recording, he reveals to them what he had seen. Vernon firstly pausing at the private military and trucks carrying the crates, he then moves on to the appearance of Yuejin with Kalf, rubbing his chin in remembering the reports of the Henney's Bar battle.
"This one," Vernon zooms in on Yuejin. "A captain of my ranks engaged him. His right-hand man perhaps? Be careful of him, he seems to be a very tricky opponent. We can’t afford for any of them to escape, especially the big ones"
"Interesting," Zhang Li sounds, rubbing his jaw. "So he's the vice, huh?"
"Looks like it. And by now, they should have figured we raided their businesses"
"So what's the plan? Shouldn't we get them today? The more we wait, the more likely they're increasing their chances of escape, don’t you think?" Tomrik figures.
"Hmm...I was thinking you all should rest and do this tomorrow. Are you willing to do this right now after all the work you’ve done today? These men are dangerous people. You’ll need all the strength you can muster. And plus, the borders of the land and sea have been secured. They won’t be going anywhere for a while," Vernon challenges, Tomrik slamming his hand against the desk with his fist formed.
"With all due respect, commander, we aren't scared of those bastards, they’re just easy pickings, all of them! For all the people they messed with, as soldiers who vowed to protect our people, I say we don't give them a chance to breathe. Isn't that right? Guys??"
"Yes, Tomrik is right," Egil nods in agreement with him. "Since your soldier hadn’t really dealt with him, I understand your relaxed thoughts. But we in Vestland had dealt with Kalf for years; this is a man who is full of surprises. If we wait by tomorrow, who knows if he'll still be there by nightfall"
"Yeah. That foreigner guy is an assassin type, right? He’s heightening his chance of escape right there," Zhang Li chuckles. "Just leave him to me"
"Huh? You can't do that! I wanted that fight," Tomrik challenges, going quiet to the sight of Zhang Li’s ghostly eyes, Vernon looking at Sebast is also wanting to hear her take.
"They are right, Commander. It is best we strike now while we can," Sebast joins, Vernon nodding in agreeing to their points.
“Hmm…” Vernon sounds, looking at Adrian who’s head hangs low, his hands in his pockets. “And what about you Captain Adrian?”
"Yeah. Let's get this show on the road. It's now or never. And he goes down now..." Adrian states to them, the moral of the captains peaking as all hands have gone on deck, and one by one they step out to the corridor, as a team that all the other soldiers in the headquarters stop to look at in awe, knowing they are going out to serve justice to whatever wrongdoer that has crossed their path.
"May the gods be with you all," Vernon tells them as they reach out the building. "I'll be leaving it up to you all. I expect you will be successful in bringing him to justice"
"Yes, sir," The captains salute together, Vernon smiling as he walks off to his soldiers picking him up, Egil stepping in Adrian’s way after the commander has left, with eyes that the other captains realize carry respect.
“Captain Adrian, I apologize as there was one thing I missed out in the reports. The year Kalf was almost locked up for his crimes, a witness came forth and revealed all his wrongdoings. That was you. You helped us and many others in almost bringing him to justice the first time, and on behalf of them, I thank you, Captain Adrian,” Egil tells him, reaching out his hand to Adrian, requesting a handshake from the one who chuckles at his change of character.
“No problem. I’m just doing my job, that’s all,” Adrian tells him, taking his hand in this newfound trust built between them.
“Hell yeah!” Tomrik shouts.
"Let's go!" Adrian commands, the other captains following his lead, all wanting to take apart a piece of Kalf.

Continuing as usual, the residence of Kalf's estate complete their tasks of patrolling, cleaning, moving crates and going off to delivery as normal, one of these trucks of men unfortunately on edge after what they were told, just like many in the estate, their anxiety shooting higher as in front are soldiers that halt their journey, the driver winding down his window with a forced smile cracking every two seconds, as Adrian and the other captains lead soldiers past the island's gate.
"C-Can I help you, gentlemen?" The driver asks, his friend's leg jumping up and down and fast.
"Get out of the truck. Make it easy for yourselves, aye?" A soldier tells him, the man sniffing in holding back his tears.
"O-Okay..." He sounds, getting out with his friend as other soldiers open the back of the truck, taking out the crates within the trailer and opening them up, finding boxes of all sorts of drugs naked within them.
"Well, I think this just helped our case even more," A second soldier says, taking a picture of the crates of drugs and sending it to the soldiers going to the estate by the side of the captains, hearing as the driver begins crying. "Oh shut up, you nonce!"
***
And by the second gate they reach, to Kalf's estate, the security already rallied in front of it as they had gotten a call from the first gate, coming face to face with captains and soldiers on the other side.
"What are you doing on our private property??" One security asks, their faces going cold as a soldier gives him the answer by flashing a warrant to his face.
"Open these gates and don't fuck around, punk," The soldier orders, the security hissing, laughing as he shakes his head.
"And what makes you think that is gonna scare us?...And who the hell is this?" The soldier asks, his face going worried as an intimidating force comes through the crowd of soldiers, firstly seeing the many tattoos and piercings over his body, with a microphone in his hands as he takes a deep breath.
"Kalf Hagen! You and your buddies here are under arrest for the smuggling of illegal substances, harassment charges and influence of other crimes done! Come out, we know you're in there!" Adrian calls, all going in silence in not hearing any other words, none from the kingpin himself.
"You aren't getting an answer cause there is no one by that name here, bastard! Get out of here!" A second security answers.
"Shut the hell up, will ya?! A soldier demands, their quarrel joined in by the others on both sides, Tomrik flinging a middle finger into the air for all of them to see, with Adrian taking another deep breath.
"Kalf!!!" Adrian shouts into the mic, prompting everybody else to go quiet in his call. "It's Adrian! Adrian Askeland! I hope you haven't forgotten about me. After all, I was your closest tool...and the one who got you on the run after I testified against your corrupted ass. Come out while I'm asking nicely...or we're forcing our way in for you..."
Once more, all fade to quietness, but no further do they wait, as doors hollow across the estate, the captains and soldiers feasting their eyes on the one who comes to greet them, angered by his presence alone.
"Adrian, my boy!" Kalf laughs, Adrian's face as cold as ice, not even wanting to entertain his upcoming nonsense, Yuejin fixing his tie as he stands behind him. "By the gods, have you grown! Tell me, have you gotten yourself a little lady yet? I remember how shy and nervous you were with the girls"
"I'm not here for the chit chat, Kalf," Adrian tells him, shushing the man's laughter. "You're under arrest. It's over, you have nowhere to run to anymore, not like the last time. The least you can do is have some dignity to not turn this into anything unnecessary. Tell them to open the gates, Kalf. Open the gates and tell your foot lickers to get the hell out of our way"
"Hm..."Kalf closes his eyes, scratching his head as he lets out a sound as he stretches. "Ah, Adrian, you're still a little kid after all, aren't you? I'd hope you would sit down with me and have a drink, talk things over. But you come to me with this? Heck, I didn't even hear you say good afternoon. Hah...well, it was nice talking to you, boy. Sorry, but I am very busy doing adult stuff. Don't worry, someday you'll understand when you've grown. Farewell..."
His footsteps like a ticking clock, they all watch as he walks away with Yuejin by his side, the soldiers gone speechless to the audacity of this criminal, with the captains also annoyed at his arrogance, Adrian's eyes fueled with anger in staring at his back, the ticking louder in his ears the farther he goes, joined by Egil who steps closer to that ticking, curling the iron of the gate with a punch that flies it open, breaking up the wall of men that stand before it, with Tomrik taking a deep breath as he points to Kalf.
"Soldiers!! Go! Go! Go!!!" Tomrik commands, the soldiers loading into the estate with cries of war as they clash weapons with the security that holds them back, all seeing as sparks of lightning dance through the atmosphere as it is Adrian who speeds through carrying a sound of thunder.
"Kalf!!!" Adrian shouts, as he stretches a fist towards him, close but stopped by the many men who get in his way, lightning blasting off his body in a sheer shout of anger that gets the enemies off him, his eyes dead set on the man who he hates.

Miracle Angeliva
Spirits, or what people usually referred to as ghosts, are something that has always been with us since ancient times. Some people are gifted to see them. However, most of us can’t see them without training. And without seeing them, we won’t believe. People only believe what they see, after all. However, I assure you, spirits are real. Spirits are always there. Just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they are not real. Just like people of ancient ages who can’t see bacteria or those who can’t see stars further than eyes can see, there are limits to our technology. Similarly, even though the current technology can’t prove the existence of supernatural beings, that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. In the future, if we can develop technology so everyone can see them just like how a microscope helps us seeing micro beings, I believe everyone will believe it too. That being said, I still can’t prove their existence yet. -Raleigh Von Vlad Update daily (if possible, if not, guaranteed chapters are on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday) Thanks to gej302 for the fantastic cover!
