‘We have located Bedivere’ - said the Inspector.
‘Excellent comrade - well done. Have you informed the secret service?’ - Asked the Chief Inspector.
‘The SS is aware sir. Bedivere was amongst the list of names we gathered from the docks sir - a known associate of Lancelot.’
‘And have you transferred Bedivere to the secret service?’ - The Chief Inspector asked.
‘Sir, as part of the greater good agreement - the SS came into possession of Bedivere.’
‘Ah yes - greater good! So they have him bagged up and ready to unburden himself of all of his secrets?’
‘There was a complication sir. When the secret service snatch team arrived at Bedivere’s place of residence to detain him, they found him deceased sir.’
‘Deceased comrade?’
‘Yes sir - a single gunshot wound to the head sir.’
‘Single gunshot wound to the head?’
‘Yes sir.’
‘And how do the secret service know this dead man was Bedivere, if he was dead?’
‘Sir, myself and Bedivere’s handler visited the slaughterhouse this afternoon at the request of Number Four.’
‘You went to the slaughterhouse this afternoon?’
‘Yes sir - as part of the greater good effort.’
‘Continue…’
‘Number Three - rightly so - thought it strange that a known associate of Lancelot would be found dead, and requested that Bedivere’s handler and myself attend the slaughterhouse to view the deceased - and to also inform the secret service if we had any previous dealings with the deceased. It was at this time that Bedivere’s handler was able to provide a positive ID that the deceased was in fact Bedivere, sir. The SS ran ballistics on the bullet that killed Bedivere - and the weapon is linked to 17 unsolved murders sir. Murders linked to the Unit.’

‘17 murders Inspector?’
‘Yes sir.’
‘Very brave of you Inspector - heading over to the slaughterhouse. Just the two of you - it’s the kind of place where you can go in, and not come out.’
‘Greater good sir.’
‘Yes - greater good. So what’s the next plan of action?’ - Asked the Chief Inspector
‘We have four Gawain targets in custody - all bagged and warm sir.’
‘Very good.’
‘We will be transferring the Gawain targets to the secret service today - but I would suggest that we convene a follow-up meeting with the previous attendees to discuss next steps based on recent developments, sir.’
‘Very good Inspector. I will discuss this with the Superintendent over lunch.’
‘Yes sir - very good sir’ - said the Inspector.
‘Thank you, comrade’ - said the Chief Inspector.
The Inspector left the Chief Inspector’s office and returned to his own office, stopping along the way for a cup of tea. The Inspector entered his office and sat down behind the desk. He opened the desk drawer and pulled out the Victory whiskey, removing the top and splashing some in the tea. The Inspector replaced the top and put the whiskey back in the desk drawer.
The Inspector picked up the phone and dialed zero. ‘The slaughterhouse’ - he said to the operator. He waited while sipping his tea.
‘What?’ - Said a voice on the end of the phone.
‘Number Four’ - said the Inspector. The line clicked and went quiet, then another click.
‘Number Four’ - said Number Four.
‘The Chief Inspector is going to speak to the Superintendent’ - said the inspector - ‘And the Superintendent will speak to the deputy-minister.’
‘And…?’ - Number Four said.
‘The deputy-minister will speak to Number Two’ - said the Inspector - ‘So make sure your man is ready and eager.’

‘Greater good comrade’ - said Number Four.
‘Also - I have the Gawain targets for you.’
‘Warm?’ - Asked Number Four.
‘Very warm’ - said the Inspector.
‘When will delivery be?’
‘Arranging it now. Expect them in about an hour.’
The Inspector hung up the phone. He immediately picked the phone up again and dialed a three digit number - ‘Get the Gawain targets delivered to the slaughterhouse’. The Inspector hung up the phone. He picked up the phone a second time and dialed a three digit number - ‘Can I have some sandwiches please...yes...yes...thank you comrade’ - and hung up the phone finally.
