[Vince is sat outside of the college on the pavement, laying on his back. The group are in the background, talking to each other, while Sissel is distracted by Vince. After a few seconds he goes over to Vince and sits down next to him. He sighs, looking around.]
Sissel: Um…
Vince: [worried] You saw it, didn’t you?
Sissel: [concerned] Well… maybe a little bit. Nothing too much.
[Vince looks at Sissel, intensely.]
Sissel: [concerned] Okay, I saw all of it. I was still in a panic about everything, so just… sorry.
[Vince sighs.]
Vince: It’s fine. Guess we’re both kinda fucked now then.
[Sissel nods.]
Sissel: I’m… not going to act as if I’m the best person to talk to, but if you want to-
Vince: I… don’t think we should.
[Sissel nods again, taking a few deep breaths. Vince looks forward.]
Vince: Because the way I see it, there’s three possibilities.
Sissel: Preacher?
[Vince nods.]
Vince: First possibility, complete coincidence that we have the same power. Second possibility, different power that’s let me copy his.
Sissel: That’d actually be cool.
Vince: Third possibility, I’m thinking time travel situation. Me from the future.
[Sissel thinks for a moment.]
Sissel: In another situation, I’d actually quite enjoy that. Meeting future versions of myself. Or you, that’d be more interesting actually.
[Vince looks at Sissel again. Sissel notices, stopping himself from talking.]
Sissel: [worried] I should stop.
Vince: No, don’t. It’s fine.
[Sissel looks forward again. Cheshire walks over and starts to nuzzle into Vince’s leg.]
Vince: You doing okay?
[Sissel gives a half-hearted smile, which quickly fades.]
Sissel: [confused] I don’t know. Been a long day.
Vince: You should really get some sleep.
Sissel: Probably.
Vince: Definitely.
Sissel: I would if I had something to sleep on.

Vince: What does that mean?
[Sissel gets up.]
Sissel: I got some stuff to think about.
[Sissel starts to leave but chuckles to himself and turns back.]
Sissel: I’m telling you if Tracey saw this…
Vince: [chuckling] If she had seen this, it would’ve made her go mad.
Sissel: [chuckling] Yeah, she would’ve like… she would’ve probably jumped into getting her own power if she could.
[The two chuckle. Sissel looks back to the group and Liv starts to walk away from them, Cheshire joining her.]
Sissel: Um… I’ll talk to you later, okay? Need to talk to Liv.
Vince: [concerned] W- Are you sure?
Sissel: Yeah, just… talk later.
[Sissel starts to walk after Liv. Leigh notices him moving.]
Leigh: [shouting] Hey Sissel!
[Sissel turns to the attention of the group.]
Leigh: [shouting] Meeting at the clubhouse! Okay?
[Sissel gives a thumbs up and runs after Liv again. Cheshire brushes up against Liv’s leg, which makes her look down and pet him.]
Liv: Hey, Cheshire…
Sissel: [distant] Hey! Wait!
[Liv turns around and sees Sissel running towards them.]
Liv: [surprised] Oh, hey Sissel.
[Sissel stops next to her.]
Sissel: [tired] So… Sorry. I’m sorry.
[Liv is confused, looking down at Cheshire.]
Sissel: [tired] About blaming you. I… don’t have an excuse, I don’t deserve one. It was wrong. I’m sorry.
[Liv looks at him, nodding slowly. She goes from confused to certain, not smiling.]
Liv: It’s fine. Really.
[Liv starts walking, Sissel moving next to her.]
Sissel: [tired] No! No it is not, I… look, I’m not sure if I can make up for that but I will try!
Liv: Sissel, really, it’s completely fine.
Sissel: [tired, forceful] I blamed you for her death, that isn’t “completely fine”!
Liv: [annoyed] Sissel, this is pissing me off more than that!

[He stops talking, she sighs.]
Liv: Sorry.
Sissel: I deserve that, don’t worry.
[Sissel chuckles awkwardly, looking down at Cheshire.]
Sissel: Um… you don’t have to forgive me about it… but I’m gonna try and make up for it.
[Liv looks at him, thinking.]
Liv: Let me say something, on behalf of Tracey.
Sissel: [concerned] Okay…
Liv: I’ve known you for years. You put a lot of effort in usually and you don’t annoy me, which I appreciate. What you’re like now? That’s not good. Okay? I know you, you always do whatever it takes for people to get pushed away, that’s how you cope. You can’t do that all the time.
[Sissel nods.]
Liv: Sissel, you’re not a bad person. So stop trying to be.
[Liv walks off with Cheshire, Sissel watching her walk down the street. He nods to himself, taking some breaths. He takes a deep breath, turning and heading off down the street. Cuts back to Vince going to Leigh, Chelsea and Gary.]
Vince: [worried] So… clubhouse?
Leigh: Yeah. Little meeting.
Vince: [worried] Okay.
Chelsea: You okay?
[Vince shrugs.]
Vince: I will be.
[Vince gives a smile.]
Vince: Let’s go.
[Vince turns and leaves, the three following behind him. Gary looks back at the College, sticks his middle finger at it wildly and follows with the group.]

Vast Asleep
The story of Kingard the Binder in the aftermath of Broken This short story is the epilogue of Broken, the second book of the Chronicles of Mother's Gate series. It’s a great follow-up to the novel, a bonus story that adds extra layers but is set apart from the full-length narrative. Vast Asleep follows the story of Kingard, who finds himself caught in a world called Mother's realm, bathed in glowing light but strangely stuck in place. He encounters his greatson Varyan there, and learns that his experiences are likely dreams. As he grows more accustomed to the loving realm around him, Kingard remembers fear and trepidation about the face of the world, and he loses contact with his companion. This story answers the question, Is Kingard really dead? with a tentative no, and new mysteries brewing. It also raises the question, What's happening while he's awake? and includes an excerpt from the sister story Ride Awake, about Kingard's situation with the Colkh'rak. Praise for Tales of the Known World Bookends: Loved it. The difference between the two stories is great! The difference between the epilogue and prologue is astounding. So much light and love in the first story. You feel safe reading it. Healing. The second, so much darkness, pain and despair. The choice of vocabulary is awesome and makes an impact. And this set of short stories ties the two books together so well. -- Dana V. of Texas ★★★★★
