《I am the Night》Chapter 3: Remake

Wayne looked into her eyes and couldn't believe what he was seeing, but then he had seen his reflection and had started to come to terms with the fact that this world, the world of Batman was just like his in so many ways. "So, what movie are you going to be in? The Netflix thing."

Julie Madison blushed and then looked away, "Well, I mean, the first movie I am going to be in isn't that amazing, it's just this horror movie remake called Clayface."

Wayne thought a moment and then asked, "Wait, the old Basil Karlo movie?"

Julie's face brightened up and she nodded, "Yes! Wayne Entertainment is partnering with Blumhouse to do the remake they even managed to get Bixby Snyder to play Clayface."

Wayne laughed and then said, "I'd buy that for a dollar!"

Julie smiled and nodded, "Yep, that guy. He's amazing."

"What part do you have in the movie?" Wayne asked as he signaled a waiter over.

Julie blushed again and then said, "The female lead. You have to promise not to laugh..."

"Oh, then you'll be Helen." Wayne thought a moment and then asked, "As I recall the original movie was known for being very scandalous because of nudity and strong sexual tension. Is that going to be something you are comfortable with?"

Julie nodded. "It might be a bit over the top, but my job as an actress is to give the best performance I can no matter what the part entails." Julie thought a moment and then continued, "These days it's rare for an actress not to do at least one nude scene in their early works."

"Isn't Katherine Karlo up for the same part?" Wayne asked.

Julie frowned and then said coldly, "Katherine is a bitch. I shouldn't be saying this, but she has a reputation as a part stealer. If she doesn't get parts with her acting she isn't afraid to get her parts the other way."

"Oh, I see. How did you end up here at my charity ball?" Wayne suddenly asked.

Julie blushed again and then admitted, "My agent said I should come here and meet some of the bigwigs at Wayne Entertainment."

Wayne turned to the waiter standing to his side, "Ginger ale for me..." Wayne looked at Julie.

"Oh, could I get a coke zero?" She asked.

Wayne smiled and said, "And a coke zero for the lady." He looked at her, "You don't drink?"

"Is that weird?" Julie smirked, "You ordered a ginger ale, at least mine tastes good."

Wayne laughed and said, "Touché. I may not look the part, but I am on a ridiculous diet. I have a few billion reasons to stay in perfect health."

Julie nodded, "It's the same for me. Even a coke zero is something of a rare treat for me. These days to be a top actress you have to stay on top of your health. The life of your career lasts only as long as your face and body hold up. For an actress, most are lucky to get ten years."

A handsome bald younger man suddenly walked up to Wayne and smiled at Julie, "Hey Bruce, who's tonight's beauty?"

Wayne looked at the bald man and as he searched his Bruce Wayne memories, "Hello, Lex. Lex Luther, Julie Madison."

Lex gave her hand a gentlemanly kiss on the knuckle and then he turned to look at Wayne, "You never called me back, Bruce. That drone project isn't going to sign itself."

Lex started to talk about the project but then Wayne noticed something over Lex's shoulder several waiters started to come out of the kitchen wearing gas masks. Wayne said suddenly, "Lex, I think we're in trouble."

Lex turned and saw the gas masks and he hissed before quickly snapping his head in the direction of his private security team and giving them a hand signal.

Wayne grabbed Julie by the arm and dashed in the direction of one of the side exits. He said to her, "I'll be ok, but you need to go. Now."

The gas-masked waiters ran to the exits just after Julie passed through and chained them up. Wayne felt an adrenaline rush like he never had before as he closed in and attacked one of the waiters taking the gas mask from his face and putting it on his own. The room erupted into screaming as the music stopped and poison gas started to fill the room. Wayne walked around the room and punched the masked waiters in the gut and stripped off their masks, one by one. Lex and his security team managed to stop one of the exits from being chained and herded several people out that door before making their escape.

The main entrance suddenly burst open and a few men with machine guns started to fire into the crowd. Wayne casually walked up behind one of them ripped his gas mask off and took the gun from his hands before using the gun to spray bullets into the other men. Once they were down he shouted at the partygoers to head out of the building while he made his way around the room looking for more of the men. From out of the kitchen came a green-haired man who looked confused that the room had emptied aside from a few dead waiters and the gunmen. He ripped off his gas mask and yelled, "Where's the party? There is supposed to be a party!"

Wayne walked up behind him and asked, "You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?"

The green-haired man spun around and asked, "Who the hell are you?"

"They used to call me Crazy Joe, but now you can call me... Batman." Wayne pulled the trigger and unloaded the rest of the magazine into the green-haired man. Still wearing the gas mask he sat down on the green-haired man's chest and said, "I hope you don't hold it against me, Joker. You're just way too... Much. For me to play this game of catch you, put you in jail, and then watch you escape again. Hey, but before you die, do you want to hear a joke?"

The Joker lay on the ground blood pouring out of his mouth gasping with his dying breath. Wayne shook his head, "Ah, I can't tell what you are trying to say. Here's that joke. What do you get when you cross a homicidal clown with vengeance? I'll tell you what you get. You get what you fucking deserve! No, not funny? Well, you know what they say, that's life." Wayne sat on top of the Joker until he stopped breathing then he sat there for a few more minutes before the police arrived. Wayne calmly took off the gas mask and set the gun down raising his hands.

The GCPD placed him in handcuffs and lead him down to a waiting patrol car and sat him inside. Lex Luther and his security team walked up to the Police officer and said, "Do you know who that man is? He just saved my life. That's Bruce Wayne. I am damn well not going to allow you to treat that man as a common criminal."

The cop looked shocked as he looked at the man calmly sitting in the back seat of the patrol car. "I'm sorry sir, but as of right now, he is a suspect until we interview everyone and sort this all out. Please step back for now and wait for the detective to get your statement."

It was another hour before Wayne was taken to the downtown GCPD station. Wayne saw a familiar face along with a detective step into the interview room. Jim Gordon looked at the detective, "Eckhardt, can you take those cuffs off him please?"

The cuffs were removed and then the three men sat down at the table together. Jim Gordon waited a moment and then said, "I'm sorry Mr. Wayne, before we begin, I'd just like to apologize for keeping you locked up like this but until we know more about what happened, it's for your safety as well as ours so I hope that you can forgive us. Your attorney will be joining us in just a moment."

Lucius Fox and another man walked into the small interview room. Lucius held his hand out to Jim Gordon and said, "Hello, I'm Lucius Fox and this is Coleman Reese, we represent Mr. Wayne."

Soon they sat around the table and Jim Gordon turned on a video camera and said, "Mr. Wayne, could I have your version of the events of Monday evening, the 28th of March."

Wayne calmly gave a blow-by-blow of what had happened at the charity event right up to the moment he killed the Joker. He described the moment he shot the Joker, "Then, another man came out of the kitchen, he threatened me with a gun so I shot him."

Coleman Reese then spoke up, "I think Mr. Wayne has given you more than enough of his time, will you be pressing charges?" Jim Gordon's eye twitched slightly and he shook his head no. "Alright then we'll be leaving, thank you, gentleman. If you have any more questions, feel free to call me at this number and I can arrange a meeting."

After they left the room Jim Gordon asked detective Eckhardt, "What did you make of that?"

Eckhardt shook his head, "I don't know why he lied about how he killed that lunatic Arthur Fleck, but the rest matched up with all the other statements from the eyewitnesses."
