《I want to live》ch. 8 The forest

I'm approaching the man besides the exit. He seems like a good person; He’s smiling and talking to the players who have finished training here.
“Hello, Rudy sent me.”
“Hi, this is a little gift for your travel.”
He gives me a little leather pouch. I open it and look inside but don't see anything, I put my hand inside and I can't touch anything, in fact, I can’t even touch the end of the pouch.
“That is a magic pouch, it can have up to 60 items and 10,000 bits. To take something out, you have to think about the item you want, it already has 500 bits so try thinking about the bits you want to take out.”
I imagine 50 bits and something appears in the pouch, I take it out. I see 5 copper coins with a big 10 carved in them. If I'm not wrong there should be, 1-10 copper coins, 100-1,000 silver coins and 10,000-100.000 gold coins. The currency is called bits here.
“Well, that's everything you'll get here so go outside and have some adventures, I recommend you the zone outside this town, there are some easy preys.”
“Thanks, I'll consider it.”
I look at the hall one last time and see a lot of people looking at me, they seem very curious.
I go outside the hall and walk towards the entrance of the town, since it is a small town, I don't take too much to reach the entrance. There is a big sign in front of the entrance “Red beginners' town”. I see lots of people fighting some slimes outside.
I approach the slimes and prepare my abilities. I use [blue hands], [red hands] and I begin moving my fury to my hands. I see a single slime wondering far from the others so I pick him. I run up to him and punch him with all I have, He just wavers and return to its original form quickly. It seems that blunt attacks are not effective. Let's try something different, I try to cut it with my hand open while pouring fury in it. The slime's body is cut into two parts and it begins to dematerialize into light particles leaving just one copper coin behind. I receive a little notification in the upper left of my sight telling me I received 1 XP.

After killing some slimes, I decide to go for something a little more challenging. I travel to the forest in front of the town's entrance. There should be some harder monsters here.
I hear a loud howl; I hid behind some bushes. I see 5 wolves walking in front of me. Should I attack them, maybe 5 are too much for me... What am I saying? it’s a game, if I die, I'll just lose some XP. I make sure to activate my abilities. I go out of the bush and attack the nearest wolf with a close fist. It gets thrown far away but I don't know if it died. The 4 remaining wolves take distance and begin surrounding me. Their intelligence surprises me.
I don't rush, I'm taking special care about my back, it's where they'll probably attack. One of the wolf rushes exactly when it thinks I can't see it, I hit it with my elbow. He falls back howling in pain but quickly enters the pack again. I think I got a plan.
I run to the closest wolf; it tries to run away and I try concentrating fury in my legs, my velocity increases dramatically, I reach the wolf, grab its leg and I use all my force while throwing it to a wolf in my left. Both of them crash and it seems that the one I grabbed can’t move so it just howls in pain.
I run to another one before they regain their formation, it takes little to no effort to reach it so I try kicking it, the wolf strongly crashes into the tree and dies. I feel a bite in my right leg, one of the remaining wolves is biting it strongly, when I try to stop it. The other wolf jumps to my back, I concentrate all my fury in my hand and try to hit the wolf but the one in my leg doesn’t let me maneuver so I fail, now there’s another wolf biting my back. Aaghh! it hurts.

I try ignoring the one in my leg while grabbing the back one, I successfully grab it but it takes a piece of my skin with him, I cut with my hand open and manage to open its throat. I throw the now dead wolf to the ground and I use my final bit of strength to hit the wolf who is still taking bits of my skin. It releases my leg and I use that opportunity to step on his face, it quickly dies. I fall into the ground due to exhaustion. I look at the wolf who can’t move, I think he’ll die soon because it’s bleeding a lot. I’m wishing that the wolf I sent far away is dead, if it returns, I won’t be able to do anything. I wait a little. I see a little message appear in my sight. “You’ve killed a pack of wolves alone, 400xp” “level up” “level up”.
I feel the adrenaline in my body dissipating. I feel... alive. I’m shaking, I’m shaking from emotion while thinking about my awaiting battles.
I got up 2 levels at once. There are two important things about the XP system. One is that it always gives all the XP at the end of the battle. The other one is that it decides how much XP to give you based in your contribution of the battle (in case of a team battle), the monster fighting and some other special conditions. Since it specifically says I fought them alone, it should have increased the amount of XP originally given by defeating the pack.
I put the points in strength. My body begun slowly regenerating since I ended the battle so I can finally stand on my feet. I grab what the wolves dropped, some coins, four pieces of leather and a little orb. What's the use of the orb? I should go back.
I reach the entrance of the forest. I see three guys approaching me. The one in the middle has a fancy black and red armor while the two at his side have a smaller armor with the same colors, they have an emblem with a lion on it.
“hey, what’s your name!?”
He asks me with a condescend tone. I want to avoid fighting with them since they have more numbers and better equipment.
“I’m Chrys, what’s yours?”
“I’m Blackflame, the one in my left is Redless and the right one is Redder, what are you doing in this place?”
“What do you mean?”
“don’t play dumb!! Why has a veteran like you spawned in this town? everyone knows that this town is Fire Lions territory, from which guild are you from!?”
“I’m not from any guild.”
“Who are you trying to fool, the people from the training hall told us that you finished your training incredibly fast, even if you deny that, who can go to the forest and hunt alone with the beginner equipment?”
He’s getting on my nerves. Even if I can’t defeat them, I should give him a punch in the face.
“And so... what? Why does that matter to you?”
“guys, this little prick is being disrespectful, just because he has a good face, he thinks he’s better than us, let’s show him that nobody disrespects Fire Lion.”
I don’t know what he’s angry at anymore.

The Laptop Hero (Portal/Isekai LitRPG)
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] - April 2022 Silas got summoned to another world—by a group of kids attending magic school who seemed rather unhappy with the results of their ritual. After a brief glimpse of his summoners Silas woke in the town dump. Unable to speak the local language, a misunderstanding escalated and before long Silas wound up in a jail cell, the locals having confiscated all his worldly possessions aside from his laptop, which had formed some strange bond with him. Now he can summon his laptop at will, and he can view his Status, level up, and gain powerful skills and magic as if he were some character in a video game, which is great and everything, but all Silas really wants to do is sit in a dark room and play games on his laptop. Only, life isn't a game, and Silas needs to get his act together because everyone else is playing for keeps. Or does he? Maybe for Silas life is just one big game now, with everyone else stuck playing by his rules. Assorted Disclaimers, in no particular order: I am only posting this on RoyalRoad.com, so if you find my story elsewhere it was not posted by me. Please do let me know! While I do consider this a progression fantasy, and have tagged it as such, Silas's Status improvements will not necessarily proceed in a linear fashion. His RPG stats will have ups and downs, exploits and nerfs, periods of growth and stagnation. Such is the life of a gamer, to be held under the thumb of the all powerful devs, or in this case a certain goddess devoted to the idea of Balance. SIlas himself should learn and grow, improving and progressing in areas where he struggles, or rather, to show such is my goal. The story is told from multiple points of view. While other PoVs will come and go, Silas shall remain the only lead character. The world Silas finds himself on is not a nice place. Expect him to encounter gore and traumatizing content and bad people who do bad things for selfish (or possibly noble) reasons from time to time. Some characters will use profanity, however due to cultural differences the curse words used will differ from those used in our corner of reality, so I'm not including the profanity content warning. Silas himself isn't one for foul language. No explicit sexual content here. This novel is intended for mature readers, however, and will include mature topics, including, but not limited to, sex, violence, death, and taxes. No harem. Might be an eventual romantic interest, possibly even some competitive jealousy, yet as his story begins Silas is too overwhelmed with other concerns to consider long term plans. Musophobics might want to steer clear of this story. Same goes for turophobics. You have been warned. Keep in mind, however, if my other disclaimers didn't make this clear, I only have the faintest of outlines at the moment. This story will take me where it will. My goal with this story is to write it to the end, something of a long-term writing exercise, with the hope others might take an interest in my work and encourage me to keep at it. I've started a number of works before, even finished a few, but this is the first time I've shared any work in a public forum. My temporary cover was made by me, in GIMP using public domain images. If you can do better I'll happily accept your submission and give credit for your work here!

After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. The cover image is a Chandra/Hubble composite image of VV 340 / Arp 302 / UGC 9618. While we're not going to space itself any time soon in the story, people from elsewhere are coming to Earth and Serenity will visit other planets. Plus, I like space imagery.
