《Eric the Unready》Chapter 7 - Another Day, another Dollar?

Given that the scent of blood would likely attract predators, Eric figured that relocation would be his goal for today.

Walking away from his camp site, Eric was happy that he survived. Even though he was tired, hungry, and thirsty, he felt that it was a huge success that he survived the night.

He took the time to collect some foxtail like fuzz for tinder and some likely vines for making cord, which would help in making snairs and other traps. Facing down beasts head on, was not a path to success, he needed to out think them. With goods in hand, he continued his walk deeper into the valley. About a hour later, he stopped, believing that he was far enough away to avoid any animals tracking him to his new camp site. Today he needed to create some tools and address his immediate survival needs. First he found some dense climbable trees where he could build a simple stake fence in the gaps between trees so he wouldn't be attacked from behind. Then he got started on building a fire.

Having made a fire once before, it went faster this time. He remembered that he needed to press on the stake to create friction, so he pushed down on the stake using another piece of wood. The fire caught quickly, and soon he had a nicely burning campfire.

He needed some bowls to boil the water from the lake, so he used embers to burn out a trough in a wood log. In the mean time, he started crafting an axe, finding a stout piece of wood that he cut a sliver through and then banged the claw into with a rock. Taking the vines, he wrapped them around the claw, trying to ensure that it wouldn't pop out again once he started using it. A few careful swings showed that despite it’s makeshift appearance, the sharpness of the claw made it a formidable tool/weapon.

Once the trough was finished, Eric scraped away the char and pour in the pond water. Setting the trough near the fire, Eric dropped hot rocks into the water to heat it up. Eric wanted to make sure that the water boiled, without burning his bowl. Soon enough, the water boiling, killing the untold amounts of bacteria in the pond water. Given that his water bottle wasn't very large, this water only whetted his thirst, but at least kept away dehydration for a little while. Eric made plans to return to the pond once appropriately attired. To that end, he started to play with the bones to see if he could create some manner of bone armor. Smashing leg bones into a tree, Eric found that it was very strong, while still relatively light and could provide some protection if fashioned correctly.

Eric wrapped his stomach with rib bones, tied together with strips of shirt and jeans. To his right forearm, he lashed a leg bone to brace his arm against attack. Thus dressed in his post apocalyptic wear (mad max style), Eric started walking back to the pond, keeping his eyes and ears open.
