《Deity's Fragments [Paused]》Chapter 14 - Battle

The cricket was the size of a grown man's leg. It leaped forward, attacking Zack.
Zack saw the cricket attack, so he moved to the left, dodging the cricket; in turn, it launched an attack that failed to connect.
This insect was relatively fast and agile, but it wasn't something he couldn't handle without using his powers. This battle would be great to better hone himself in combat against monsters.
The cricket reached another tree and jumped back towards Zack. This time, he didn't dodge but charged straight at the cricket connecting with a slash.
The cricket fell to the ground while voting green-colored blood.
"Criiii!"
He jumped into a tree, then another, and started moving faster as he jumped into different trees. When he reached a speed fast enough to leave a mirage of himself, he attacked.
Zack couldn't see where the blow came from, so he took it full on. The collision caused him to roll a few meters, but he quickly regained his composure, used the speed with which he was moving, and with his hands propelled himself into the air giving a spin and then landing on his feet, still falling backward and leaving marks of his feet on the ground.
Zack activated his ocular ability and waited for the cricket's next attack. The cricket had to slow down the speed at which it moved to make a new movement pattern in the area where Zack had fallen.
Zack was amazed at this monster's intelligence; it could do some essential tactics in the fight, making it more difficult to battle.
The cricket had already marked its area, so it decided to attack from Zack's left side. As he attacked, Zack turned his vision and saw the cricket coming towards him.
He ran electricity down his arm directing it towards his sword as he took a step backward to make a crescent moon attack towards the cricket.

The electricity coursed through the sword and shot out, forming a crescent moon slammed into the cricket.
"Bzzz" *Electrical sound*.
"Criiiii" The cricket fluttered to the ground as it was electrocuted. Zack wasted no time and charged with both of his swords towards the cricket's head.
The cricket's head came off as green blood spurted from its limbs.
[You have killed a level 1 medium giant cricket.]
(Note: For AI, you use "[* *]," and for system voice, you use "[ ]")
Zack sat for a moment as his body trembled. He couldn't deny that he was afraid; it was his first battle, and this might even kill him, but he couldn't let fear win him the battle before cricket.
His mentality from this moment on would get stronger as he fought. He still played video games on his computer and rarely trained until not too long ago, when he got his skill, and everything started to change.
Zack gently slapped both of his cheeks and pulled himself together. He walked over to the corpse and, with one of the swords, opened the corpse and picked up a core-shaped object that was still moving.
It was dirty with green blood, so the only thing he could do was to clean it and then eat it.
Zack finished cleaning the core, but he still looked at it with disgust. He swallowed and closed his eyes as he put the core in his mouth and ate it.
To his surprise, it didn't taste bad; he even felt he could become addicted to the taste.
[Medium level 1 Giant Cricket Core consumed]
[1 to 10 attributes will be gained]
[+10]
Zack was surprised. No wonder it was difficult for him to fight the cricket; it was medium level. But what surprised Zack the most was the power of the thunder. He only used 50 energy points in that attack and left the cricket paralyzed. He also felt that he had barely used less than 1% of the lightning ability, this was a powerful ability, but he didn't have enough power to use it to its total capacity.

Beasts in the hunting area are divided into: (Low, medium, high and elite). In the first area, you will find level one and level two beasts. Currently, Zack had fought a level 1 medium beast.
'I have 50 points assigned and 10 unassigned attributes. In order to ascend to the hunting dimension 2, I need 600 power points. This is going to take a while before I can advance any further.' He said to himself.
'I have powerful skills, and I think I can continue hunting with the capacity I have now, my biggest problem is the level of consumption that these skills have, I will designate the 5 points to resistance and 5 to Mind to have better control and less consumption over the ability]
[*5 attribute points assigned to Endurance*]
[*5 attribute points assigned to Mind*]
'Can you do this too?" asked Zack in surprise.
[*I can help the master to no waste time with these things, but I can only do it when the master is willing to do it.*]
Zack nodded and opened his database.

Zack looked to the side and sighed. His backpack was ripped when he rolled, and everything he had in it was spread on the floor.
He walked over to the backpack and picked it up. It only had a few scratches, but it wasn't unusable; the hit had just ripped it a little. He began to gather his supplies and pack them. He ate a few meals so they wouldn't go to waste since they couldn't be put away again.
When he finished, he looked at the cricket's body for a moment, then closed his eyes, took a breath, and started moving through the trees again.
He ran for about 30 minutes and then started walking. Although he was an awakened one, he still didn't have enough strength to run for hours without getting tired.
As he was walking, he suddenly stopped behind a tree and put down his backpack. There were five blue-colored crickets ahead. These were sure to be low class. He couldn't be that unlucky to run into five high-class crickets together, which was almost impossible in this part. He unsheathed his two swords, and after waiting a few minutes, he found the time to strike.
One of the crickets had moved away from the others and was on a tree branch near Zack. He used the electricity to boost and jumped to the low tree branch attacking in a spiral with his two swords.
[You have killed low level 1 giant cricket.]
Zack had slashed the cricket next to its branch, but this made a noise that allowed the other four crickets to hear.
This time, he wasn't scared; he realized that they were low-class crickets. If he was in trouble, he could shoot out there, and these crickets couldn't stop him.
'I like this feeling of adrenaline rushing through my veins,' he thought.
Smiling, he moved and attacked the first cricket of the four to make his attack ...

Mother of Learning
Zorian is a teenage mage of humble birth and slightly above-average skill, attending his third year of education at Cyoria's magical academy. He is a driven and irritable young man, consumed by a desire to ensure his own future and free himself of the influence of his family, whom he resents for favoring his brothers over him. Consequently, he has no time for pointless distractions or paying attention to other people's problems. As it happens, time is something he is about to get plenty of. On the eve of the Cyoria's annual summer festival, he is killed and brought back to the beginning of the month, just before he was about to take a train to Cyoria. Suddenly trapped in a time loop with no clear end or exit, Zorian will have to look both within and without to unravel the mystery before him. And he does have to unravel it, for the time loop hadn't been made for his sake and dangers lurk everywhere... Repetition is the mother of learning, but Zorian will have to first make sure he survives to try again - in a world of magic, even a time traveler isn't safe from those who wish him ill. ********************************** If anyone is interested, I have a story-related worldbuilding site that can be found here. I don't update it as often as I should, but there is a fair amount of content there already. It also contains a page with all the fanart, fan translations, audio books and the like - you can reach it directly by clicking this link. I have a patreon account for those kind people that want to give me money. It also contains info for those who want to donate via paypal. The story was originally posted on fictionpress, back in 2011. When I reached chapter 91, I started uploading the story to RoyalRoad, one chapter per day. The story will continue to be updated on fictionpress as well as here, and can be reached by clicking on this link if somebody is interested, though at this point there is nothing there that isn't also on RoyalRoad. ********************************** The cover you see on the side has been made by a fellow RoyalRoad user Sydorow. Thank you for your time and art skills.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
