《Deity's Fragments [Paused]》Chapter 10 - Free Hunt

Walking outside the academic facilities, a large green field could be seen. Zack had never felt such fresh, clean air.

It took him a minute to feel the pleasant surroundings, but soon he started to move, as he didn't want to be looked at strangely by the people walking around.

You could see couples, men with a tamed beast, people carrying different kinds of weapons, as well as groups carrying some dead creatures.

The more you advance in the military school, the more freedom to go out hunting you would have. Besides, the school guarantees to be rescued in life or death cases, but this only applies to those who are students belonging to the school.

Walking, he approached a door that connected to a large barricade. This was the barrier that protected the school from outside beasts.

As he approached the door, he was stopped by two guards. "Your student ID," said one of the guards.

These guards were muscular, and their indifferent looks made them look like an immovable mountain. Zack pulled out his ID and held it out to the guard.

Before handing it to him, the guard refused it. "You are not yet cleared to leave the compound. Please return your way."

Zack was taken aback by this, he didn't even get a good look at his ID, but he could deduce whether he had permission or not, although he didn't know that he needed any permission to be able to leave the school.

'Maybe this and other types of restrictions are fled by those who choose not to join this military school,' he thought as he walked back, wanting to see the other surroundings of the school.

"'Oh, look who's here, we meet again.' A familiar voice sounded from behind Zack's back.

"Do you really have to show up on people's backs?" he said to Dereck, who was walking towards him along with Jin Na. "Are you two a couple? I always see you two together," he asked.

Jin Na blushed and answered, almost shouting. "Of course not!"

"Oh, it seems that she almost dislikes the idea of being together as a couple. You're unlucky. Is it like that with the other girls?" said Zack while giving a small smile.

Dereck and Jin Na were surprised, they thought that the ice block (Zack) didn't even smile or make any jokes, but it seems they were wrong. Maybe the last situation changed his perspective towards them.

When Zack saw their expressions, he realized what was going on and went back to his normal face. He himself didn't understand why he was suddenly so friendly with these two people.

"Do you have some free time, Jin Na and I are thinking of going to the general market to see if we can find anything of use; would you like to come along?" asked Dereck.

"While we're at it" He didn't know what market they were talking about as he thought it would be some classroom from a marketing class or something, and since he had nothing else to do, he decided to follow them, but he would still keep his guard up.

Walking, he realized that they were not walking towards the school entrance, but they were surrounding it. Stopping and clenching his fist, he said, "Where are you taking me?".

Dereck and Jin Na looked at each other and then at Zack, "You don't know about the general market? I thought you knew about it since you agreed so quickly." Putting his right hand behind his head and making a complex face, he said. "I know you're suspicious of us, but we have no ulterior motives; what's more, you can check that market on your tablet. It should have it marked."

Sighing, he decided just to keep walking, leaving the sentence alone. "Forget it, let's keep going."

If they had some ulterior motive, he would find out. Besides, the worst thing that could happen was to get badly beaten if a large group ambushed him, and with that, he could get these two off his back and get revenge later. There was also the fact that he had no real enmity with them; he just wondered why they were so friendly with him.

They arrived at the back of the school where they found a door labeled 'General Market'; passing through the door, they found themselves in a market crowded with humans.

Zack was amazed by the magic; to make this kind of door required two well-synchronized experts in the use of space-time magic.

Following Dereck, they passed several stalls where they sold different types of goods. Potions, armor, weapons, mounts, food, services, etc ... What surprised him most were the different races he encountered.

Orcs, beast-men, goblins, spirits, demons, and other varieties of races.

"This is the largest market in the entire number one hunting area. If you cause trouble, even if you belong to a powerful race or family, you can't get away with it. Come on, let's go through registration." Dereck said.

"Registration?" asked Zack.

"Yes, Jin Na and I will register. When you register, they give you a direction stone that teaches you how to return to the market when you go out hunting. Since we signed up for the school's Free Hunt, it would be nice to have this."

"Free Hunt?" he asked again.

Dereck looked at him a moment, a little frustrated, and answered. "Did you seriously skip school registration without knowing anything? Did you want to come and be food for the beasts?" He sighed. "Free hunting is an option the school gives you; you can go out hunting without being tied to subjects or some school restrictions."

Thinking for a moment about what Dereck said, this was something many would actually want. Most young people just wanted to get into the area to hunt beasts. They didn't want to waste time in classes.

"If this is the way you say, then why does the school bother getting young people in?" asked Zack.

"That's a good question," Dereck said as they continued walking and talking. "We got in late, but the new entrants are taught how hard it is to live here, how many hunters die, and why they need to join the military school. Although they are right about the hard life hunters have, they just want to brainwash the students, so they join the military when they graduate and not some organization." He continued speaking.

"But why let some students go out hunting freely then? They need guinea pigs to keep the wash on the students, plus when you join the free hunting group you have to turn in 10 core of beasts monthly and always have a GPS on you" When he said this, his gaze was a little cold, something unnatural of him.

Zack noticed this but decided not to dig into this; he himself was not interested in others digging into his past. Dereck stopped talking, and they kept walking until they came to a giant building.

This was the place where the general market registration was done.
