《The Legend of The Demon Prince》chapter 7 : the fire dragon

Emily and Yue were going through the dense forest carefully. This time they were extremely cautious of running into wild beasts. After the last experience with the wolves they had already learnt their lesson that no matter what always be cautious!
They had been walking for an hour. Kong Yue had his hands on the hilt, ready to draw at any moment and use the momentum of the draw for instant kill. Emily couldn’t bear the suffocating silence and finally spoke, “what will you do with reward?”
“What?”
“Yes, what will you do with it? I want a share too as I am also risking my life!”
“Ok then we will split it. 90 – 10 happy.”
“wtf?”
“Now be quiet! Do you want to be ambushed?”
After this bout, they quietly moved forward. After walking for an hour they had already reached the lake and fastened their pace. It was surprising that even though Yue had taken his first mission he still ran without making any notice in the forest whereas Emily’s feet produced negligible sound.
Both moved in a practiced manner for another hour or so after which they had already reached the inner parts. There was still a large distance from central part but roars of bests was growing older.
“Emily, it’s your turn to guide now. Where?”
“Just follow me.”
“Don’t run too much ahead of me or you may get hurt.”
“En.”
Moving steadily, another hour passed. Finally they had reached the central part. There had been 2 instances where they had seen that beasts were coming their way and had climbed trees and hid themselves. Due to which there journey of a dozen kilometers took them 4 hours. Emily still kept leading and after few minutes they reached a garden in the middle of the forest.

The garden was as large as a football field with different flowers growing around. It was a bizarre site.
“Emily, is this the place?”
“Yes! Isn’t this place beautiful?”
“Yes it is. Now on with the mission. Let’s leave quickly.”
“You are such a coward.”
“Where is the soul fire flower? We have to get 15 of them.”
“Look there”
Emily pointed at a flower which was growing abundance in this garden. The flower was growing in 100s in this place. There were beautiful flowers surrounding it, looking at these enormous numbers greed surfaced in his eyes.
“Emily, what are those flowers?”
“They are fire breath flower, golden flame flower, sunny grass and fire orchid! They are all so beautiful. I had come here once before. It’s been 6 months since my last visit!”
“Amazing!”
Yue couldn’t help feeling elated at this heavenly site. But something was bothering him. He also thought, why were all these flowers related with fire? Is it just a coincidence? He couldn’t bear this curiously and turned to Emily.
“Why are all these flowers, have fire affinity?”
“Well, I only came here once before in my whole life so how should I know?”
“This is suspicious. Let’s just get enough of these and leave. There is a risk of beasts coming here soon.”
Yue thought inwardly that though this place was the central most part, why weren’t there any beast here? Also the roars of beats sounded very low indicating that they were too far from here. He was left guessing about the secret of this place.
While he was busy, checking the surrounding, Emily had already filled their bags with dozens of soul fire flowers.
“Yup we have enough now, let’s go.”
“Can’t we go later? It is so beautiful here!”

Suddenly a deafening roar came from nearby.
“Holy shit! This must be the legendary dragons”
Emily cried out and urged Yue to run. Without any further delay both of them ran at top speed. Even though Emily didn’t run fast, she was pulled by Yue so she was going at a much faster rate. Both of them were running when they noticed a gigantic shadow hovering over them.
It was the legendary dragon! A magnificent being at the sky qi realm. Maybe the most powerful being on a planet lacking in qi cultivators. It was an unparalleled existence here. A fire breathing, 50 m long entity, so strong that it could annihilate very thing in its path.
Its aura was suffocating to the extreme. The dragon was flying in air. It was a km away from them. They ran as fast as possible. But the dragon was catching up to them. 900m, 600m, 300m, and then it was directly above them. They were now in a rocky region. There were huge rocks as large as 40 m high everywhere. Yue without any thought pushed Emily into a crater before the dragon could catch them. Yue had a smile on his face. A smile of satisfaction. Emily soundlessly cried.
The dragon pounced on the now stopped Yue. It carried the little human into midair. The dragon had a lustrous skin deep red in color. It was radiating scorching heat all around it.
The dragon said with a majestic voice, “Stupid humans, you dared to enter my territory and even dared to plunder my food! You are courting DATH! ”
It threw Yue in the air with a velocity such that it was difficult to even follow with the eye. The dragon opened its mouth and gulped down the human in the air at once. Then it looked down and said again, “I am sparing your pitiful life for now. Never gain appear here. SCRAM!”
“Yue!”
Emily cried out loudly from that crater. She was now filled with fear and worry. Is yue dead? She couldn’t believe that he died just like that. Emily was girl who had a badmouth but was actually very sensitive. These past days with yue had changed her impression of yue. She now viewed him as her best friend and was unwilling to leave like that. She also thought about her mother. What would she do? She just lied there on her back in that cramped space.
Even though she completed the mission the duo had taken what was the benefit? She regretted coming here. She regretted telling him that she will guide him. She regretted meeting yue. She believed that she was the one who killed yue, her best friend!

Beyond the Bridge
There are many worlds, many multiverses, and you can move between them via the Federation's Bridge network - magical gateways to other worlds. The world dubbed "C'thon" by its inhabitants - or Gamma-Theta-Nu-649, if you ask the Federation's bureaucracy - was deserted when the Federation found it. The "civilized" races had all died out centuries prior, and the wilderness had grown downright feral in their absence. Now, the lonely Federation outpost of Bridgetown is under constant threat from the hungry wildlife, malicious fey, territorial goblins, and wandering undead that surround it. The town's distance from the Federation's centers of power means that it gets precious few of the resources that it needs to stay safe and afloat. Enter the Guild of Adventurers, a plucky and disparate crew who do the Federation's dirty work in exchange for coin. One team, the first of many, crosses the Bridge to C'thon looking for fame, fortune, and (if they're lucky) the answer to a newly-discovered Prophecy. They'll get much more than they bargained for, although first they need to avoid being eaten by the local wildlife. Updates weekly on Wednesday. Chapters will be as long as they need to be for them to work, which means they can vary. If anything drops below 2500 words, I'll post an extra chapter if I have one ready. [PS: This is not a litRPG, but I do borrow heavily from TTRPGs for inspiration, and the general setting and storyline is from a TTRPG campaign I'm running.] [PPS: This is my first attempt at writing long-form fiction. I'm not trying to make a great piece of literature or have a multi-novel overarching plot, but hopefully it'll still be a fun story - let me know what you think in the comments.] [PPPS: Cover image is from a free-download wallpaper by Tyler Edlin; I do not own it, and will take it down immediately if requested.]
