《God Slaying System》Proving your Worth

Soon after, both Issac and Kane were seen inside of the arena which was just a floor below them. It was a really wide arena that had a lot of space to move around and make really tactful plays.
The area was flat and big.
'How did it get down to this ?' Etna sighed as she reflected on her inability to stop the fight.
All the other members of the team were also sighing looking at the stage before them. They all only had one thought for Issac and that was none other than defeat. Honestly, no one expected Issac to win against Kane in this fight.
"But, I would really love to see what that Issac dude is capable of. I don't think that he would just make such a confident statement without having something to back it up." Goofy said as he pretended to massage his goatee which he of course didn't even have.
"Yeah I would also like to see his limits." Taki agreed with Goofy.
It was not that they underestimated Issac or something. It was just that they were too confident in the abilities of their friend Kane who could be said to be among the top 5 battle maniacs of Chaos.
Kane was also a swordsman class in the game. He had a muscular physique and just one glimpse on him could tell that he was agile too. All in all, he had the perfect physique required for a swordsman to excel at their class.
Kane unsheathed the sword hung on his back and with just one look at it, Issac was surprised. It was none other than the Sword of Heroes that was taken from him back in Blue Sky City.
Looking at the surprised expression of Issac, Kane laughed.
"What's up with that expression ? Now, Don't tell me that you are scared."
"Nah, I was just surprised by seeing that sword on your back. I used to have one of them too. Let's start the battle and let the actions speak for themselves, shall we now ?" Issac gave a faint smile as he provoked Kane to start the battle.
"Let's see how long you will have that smile on your stupid face. Don't worry I will make it quick." Kane shouted enraged.
Suddenly, the sound of a system countdown sounded throughout the arena.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1 … Defy Heaven and unleash your potential. Start!!!
As soon as the system said start, Kane started rushing towards Issac with full speed. He had a creepy looking grin on his face while rushing towards Issac whereas, on the other side of the arena, Issac was just standing still without even taking out his weapons.

His behavior really made everyone question what he was doing.
"Did he already give up ?" Taki muttered.
Wind Steps!
Using his skill Wind Steps, Kane got a temporary boost in his speed. In the blink of an eye, Kane had already managed to cross a distance of 5 yards separating Issac and him.
The others looking from the audience area were shocked. Last time when Kane had executed his skill, they could at least see his afterimages while moving but, right now they couldn't even see a single speck of Kane before he crossed the distance of 5 yards. This could only mean one thing: Kane's skill rank had increased.
Just the thought of this sent shivers down the spine of even Etna. Although Kane right now was not as strong as her, he was improving at a really tremendous speed and would surely catch up to her in due time.
Might of a Lion!
Hurricane Slash!
Just as Kane appeared before Issac, he executed one berserk and one attack skill.
Peng!
"Huh ?" Everyone watching and even Kane was surprised by the sudden situation. Issac had taken out a sword and also had managed to stop his full berserk mode strike with just one hand. No one had even seen Issac taking out a weapon much less getting the time to stop the strike.
He had stopped the strike just before it had landed.
"What precision." Etna muttered.
Mad, Kane started madly executing slash after slash at a really tremendous speed packed with explosive power towards Issac but, the result was always the same. Issac always managed to stop all the strikes with one hand like it was nothing.
Kane suddenly backed off 10 steps as he saw his berserk attack failing to hit its mark even once.
Kane had already felt that Issac's strength was way more than his even though he was lower level than him. This could mean only one thing: Issac had spent all his attribute points on his strength attribute. There was no other way to explain the situation otherwise.
Kane gave a faint smile after reaching that conclusion.
"Heh! Do you think that you can overpower me only using your overly dis balanced strength attribute. My major power is not strength. I will show you noob what really happens when you don't properly balance your attributes. Let me show you the difference between our speed." Kane boasted as if he had figured out everything there was to know about his opponent.

"Let's see." Issac replied laughing.
Kane suddenly became even more agile than before. As he approached Issac, many afterimages of him could be seen from a distance. While fighting, if a player left afterimages while approaching their opponent, the opponent would be confused and would reveal many of their openings.
Several times, even expert players made mistakes by exposing their opening. Even if it was for a second, a fight between expert players could take a whole turn just due to one mistake, so leaving afterimages while fighting was an amazing tactic.
Before even a few seconds had passed, Kane's real body suddenly appeared behind Issac. He had left a few afterimages in front of Issac to confuse him and strike when he created an opening behind him.
"There!!" Kane shouted as he slashed towards Issac who was before him.
Slash!
"Huh? How?" Kane suddenly blurted out as his sword went through Issac before him.
"Do you think that you are the only one capable of making afterimages?" Issac said as he arrived behind Kane.
"But, but .." Kane tried to talk but remembered that he was still in the middle of a fight.
He jumped up a little and rotated his whole body around really quickly executing one of his skills.
Hero Strike!
Suddenly, Kane felt something hit as he slashed his sword towards Issac.
Floosh!
Dirt and Dust covered the whole area before Kane at the place where Issac was standing. Just the pressure from the attack left a whole area before Kane was damaged.
"Hahaha!!!" Kane started laughing thinking he had succeeded in defeating Issac.
Kane waited for a few seconds for the system to declare the winner but, the sound of the notification he was expecting never entered his ears.
As the dust settled down, a figure stood still in front of Kane. Right now, really dark aura was spreading from the figure making anyone inside the area of the aura feel like the god of death himself stood before them.
Kane suddenly felt a chill sent down his spine.
"Impossible…." Kane became speechless as the figure standing before him was none other than Issac. Just before he had struck Issac, he felt like the man that stood before him was nothing more than an average player. But, now he felt as the god of death himself had arrived before him.
Fear could be seen in the dark black eyes of Kane.
Before Kane had executed Hero Strike, Issac had not used any abilities or skills. But, without the use of his Passive skill: Aura of Darkness, even he would have gotten some heavy damage if he hadn't reduced the attributes of Kane by 10%.
"Good. This seems like the perfect time to try out my new berserk skill. Now, it's my time to attack." Issac said as confidence and determination flashed through the eyes of Issac that were practically screaming to destroy anyone who stood before him.
Blood Reaper!
Suddenly, the whole appearance of Issac started changing as black serpents started rotating around his body. Black mist suddenly started coming out from the body of Issac that looked like it could end life anywhere it went.
"Sto.." Before Kane could even react, Issac suddenly appeared before him.
Slash! Slash!
Suddenly, two slashes went through the body of Kane as he tried to run.
Maintaining his posture, Kane took his fighting stance believing that he would die defending as there was no way that he could match the speed of Issac.
Those two normal slashes alone made it so that Kane lost more than 25% of his HP. He looked around his surroundings to see where Issac would attack from next but, there was no sign of Issac anywhere in the whole arena.
"What is really going on ?" Taki asked Etna.
Etna kept quiet, too immersed in the match before her. This was the first time she had seen such an amazing match take place before her. She was too immersed in the fight so that she would not miss out any of the details of the match. Right now, she was like a small baby getting immersed into a cartoon.
Suddenly, 2 more slashes went through the body of Kane dropping his HP to less than 50%. Similarly, the battle ended without Kane even noticing where he was getting hit from. Only after Kane's body fell to the floor and the system announced the victor, Issac's shape came into view inside of the arena.
Everyone watching was just too shocked from what had happened.
How did Issac completely disappear from the arena? How did Kane lose his life? Just who was this Issac?
These questions were running through everyone's mind.

This was my entry for National Novel Writing Month, because why only write one series at a time? The more the merrier! (meanwhile, my keyboard bursts into flames...) I'm also the writer of The Last Science, an ongoing low-fantasy/speculative sci-fi series. If you're familiar with that, you know what to expect here: lots of character-focused drama and dialogue, not a whole lot of traditional action. However, I'm writing a bit differently than usual here, and in a very different structure, so there should be some surprises for returning readers. I hope you enjoy it! [Discord] — for those of you who want to hang out and chat. Cover art (fullsize): Path of Revelation, by taenaron (Tobias Roetsch), modified by Etzoli. Normally I like to do my own cover art from scratch, but I was in a rush for the contest. Might be replaced down the line if I get time.
