《The Power of Love》My Luz

Amity groaned as she lifted her head up from the armrest of the couch. She remembered coming over for the sleepover, which had finally been between just her and Luz, but she didn’t remember heading to bed. Then again, if she had, then maybe she wouldn’t have passed out on the couch. Even worse, she didn’t have a blanket, pillows, and she’d fallen asleep on two lumpy logs that made her back feel great right now. Did Eda slip her a sleep potion or something?

Opening her eyes, she dismissed the idea. She also said goodbye to breathing as her idiot’s face hovered over her. Luz was still asleep and had done so while sitting up. Amity wondered if it had been so she wouldn’t wake her. Wait, how had she managed to even sleep like this? The very thought made her stomach churn and her heart flip… But she didn’t scream. In fact, her cheeks only turned a little red even.

Okay. So this was a dream. That was good to know. She’d actually gotten pretty good at figuring out whenever she was dreaming of Luz because of that. Well, and her making sure she figured out someway to know that if, and this was a very big if, Luz ever said she loved her she wouldn’t have to waste time thinking she was just in another dream.

It also meant she could better enjoy the dreams. Her subconscious couldn’t keep her Luz away from her. Her dumb, energetic, sweet, kind Luz. Amity pressed her hands against the couch and slowly lifted herself up. She didn’t want to wake up Luz immediately, but being in her lap made that a little hard. After all, every fidget threatened to make her flip off of her love’s legs and faceplant into the ground.

But she was a master of subtlety. After all, if she wasn’t, Luz would know how she felt and her screaming would get an answer.

...Okay, she was a master of subtlety, or Luz was really polite. Or dense. She really hoped it was that last one. But in a dream, it didn’t matter. Amit could slip a hand onto one of Luz’s cheeks, bring their faces closer, and-

And get her eye jabbed by Luz waking up and turning her head so that her ear went directly into Amity’s eye. It was actually a pretty big concern between witches and the serious girl screamed in pain from the shock of it. Even worse, Luz flailed at the sudden sound and threw Amity off of her legs, indeed causing the serious girl to slam face first into the hardwood floor of the Owl House.

Amity turned herself over while one of her eyes stayed closed and she yelled, “Hey, watch your ears!” Stupid, pointy things. She normally was pretty thankful for the fact that Luz had her round ears whenever she accidentally leaned in to look at her idiot better.

Wait a second. Amity looked back at Luz and blinked a few times, and not just because of the pain in her eye. She had to make sure that she wasn’t just imagining things after all. Sure, it was a dream, but Luz was always human in her dreams. No question. Now though, she had the same, dumb pointy ears that Amity had. They even became flushed with color when embarrassed like Amity’s.

Luz leaned down to help Amity up. “Oh gosh. I’m so sorry. I just felt a breath against my face and do you know how weird that feels? If I knew it was you though I, um…” Luz blushed as she touched the cheek that Amity had been so close to as she glanced away.

Amity turned a little red herself before she reached forward and grabbed Luz’s ears. “I don’t even know why you would put these on. Do you know how much I would give to not accidentally clip my ears because I thought my head was clear of something?”

However, instead of whatever prosthetics she had one stretching or coming off, Luz slapped her hands away as she yelled, “Ow! Of course I do, I’ve dealt with them as long as you have. Well, except for the three months where you weren’t born yet.”

Luz giggled at the reminder that the human was the older of the two of them while Amity just frowned. She then leaned in close and whispered, “But Luz, you’re h

Amity emerged from the water with a gasp. She liked to do some deep dives when she swam but she still had to breathe, as much as she wished she could master a spell to fix it. She hadn’t gotten down underwater casting yet though. Not that it mattered too much when she was just on a pool date with her girlfriend.

Speaking of which, Amity turned to catch said girlfriend staring at her. She gave Luz, an older looking Luz for that matter who was still mostly lithe despite the years, a wink to let her know she caught her staring. The energetic girl’s ears turned bright red before she turned her head away and Amity let out a sigh of relief at seeing those round ears she liked.

Luz only looked back over as Amity slipped out of the water to sit beside her. Unlike Luz, she had filled out a bit and her bikini, which was so much braver than anything the serious girl would even consider wearing in reality, flaunted it all for her human. They’d been together a few years though so Luz didn’t lose it like she had when Amity had hit her growth spurt anymore. Well, not as much anyway. “So, is this taking your mind off of finals like you wanted?”

Ah, Amity thought to herself, that was a part of this setup. Nice. Her mind even started to fill in the gaps as she gestured to one of the abominations that awaited nearby with chilled drinks. “Good sun, my girlfriend looking as hot as the day is, and the ability to relax? I’d say yes if you didn’t keep asking.”

Luz giggled nervously before saying, “Sorry. I guess I’m just having trouble forgetting about them. After all, if I want to go to the same college as you, I’m going to have to work my butt off.”

Amity frowned for a second before playfully whining, “But I like your butt.”

Luz’s head began steaming for a second before she looked at the abomination with the drinks and shouted, “Dump your tray!”

For a second, Amity assumed she was safe. After all, though not without trying, the two girls hadn’t figured out yet how to make Luz be able to control abominations. Her way of casting magic simply wasn’t compatible with the craft. Of course, this was a dream so while Amity was telling herself all of this, a set of very cold drinks drenched her. “Ah!”

Luz almost rolled over as Amity jumped up to try and flick off as much of the juice from herself before the serious girl yelled, “Luz!”

The human smirked at Amity from where she laid on the ground before saying, “I need the practice!”

Amity hugged herself to try and get a little warmer as she glared at her girlfriend before being unable to stop herself from sighing happily. “Well, at least your lessons are finally paying off.”

“I sure would hope so. I’m in the abomination track with you after all.”

Amity creased her brow for a second before opening her mouth. She didn’t even get to say anything though before Luz’s face twisted and

Amity put down her drink as she got up from the small table she’d been sat at. She was never much of a fan of these high society parties that her parents dragged to her. She had a hard enough time comfortably talking amongst groups of her friends, let alone with a bunch of people who simply reinforced the pressure she felt at home. At least she was good at hiding it, unlike with how she felt about Luz.

Speaking of, she smiled as she saw her human obviously annoying a few of the other guests with some snooty impression of hers. Amity began striding towards her before a mental tick went off in her, reminding her of the past two scenes. And immediately telling her what the problem this time might be.

She didn’t simply come out and say it though. She would try and be more subtle as she sidled up next to the well dressed girl. After all, Luz’s suit was much better fitted than the one she wore to Grom, though Amity kind of wished she still had her tutu on. “So, how are you enjoying yourself?”

Luz smirked as she crossed her arms and watched her victims walk off in disgust. “Thankful that my parents aren’t seeing this. I am so tired of getting yelled at when I come to stuff like this.”

Amity’s face dropped a little at the statement as her suspicions felt almost entirely confirmed and she really didn’t like this one. “I wouldn't take you for someone to come to these normally, even if you crashed it.”

Luz shrugged. “Yeah, but you know how it is. You only were even willing to bring me because you knew I knew how to behave because of my upbringing.”

Amity balled her fists in frustration before shouting, “I wouldn’t bring you because I wouldn’t want to watch you be miserable because you’re not high b

Amity didn’t even try to pretend to be a part of this dream. She was too annoyed by all of this at this point. Was this a nightmare? It didn’t scare her enough to feel like one. Just like a really dumb dream. She put a few fingers against the middle of her forehead before with her other hand she swiped some of her hair behind one of her ears.

She then blinked a few times as she did the gesture again and found her hand to stay mostly parallel with her head. Normally if she did that, she’d smack her ear and internally scream at herself for it. Right now though, she didn’t need to. In fact, she had to almost flatten her hand against her head to feel her ear properly.

Her round ear. So she was human this time. She was pretty okay with that actually. And, now that she knew the alteration, could calm down and take in the fact that she was in front of a rather mundane house. In fact, one that mirrored most of the ones on the block. Water dripped on her from above which for a second made Amity’s body freeze out of panic as she noticed the darkened clouds but it didn’t burn. Weird. It’d be cool if wherever Luz came from didn’t have boiling rain but she’d never even considered the possibility.

She didn’t dwell on it too long though. Not when the door to the house that she was in front of swung its door open and a woman who shared Luz’s skin color and could easily be old enough to be the idiot’s mother looked at Amity. The woman then shouted, “Nina, please get in here before you catch a cold.”

Amity nodded before running to the house. Or, more sprinted because of what she was used to on the Boiling Isles but who was keeping track. Besides, if she was dreaming of Luz’s house, then she was more than happy to focus on that rather than whatever her mind thought human weather was like.

The older woman closed the door behind Amity before smiling at her and saying, “I hope I’m not wrong, but you’re Amity, right?”

Amity slipped off the light sweat coat she was wearing once she was inside before smiling at Luz’s mother. “Indeed, and it’s a pleasure to finally get to meet you, Miss Noceda.”

The woman laughed for a moment before saying, “Please, it’s my pleasure and call me Camilla. I’m just happy to finally meet my mijo’s girlfriend, especially with how much he’s told me about you.”

Amity blushed for a second though her mind said something was off about what she’d just said. She dismissed it though and instead asked, “I hope only good things.”

Camilla smiled brightly at her as the two walked towards the dining room. “Oh, I assure you that once you two started getting along, he hasn’t been able to stop gushing about you. They even demanded to cook tonight to try and make sure to impress you.”

Amity smiled at the thought before hearing a voice that was… off. It sounded like Luz, kind of. A bit deeper though. Less feminine. Still had the same energy and cadence but- Oh. Oh no. No no no.

However, with ‘Luz’ proclaiming, “Speaking of which, my feast is done,” came with it the human Amity loved. Well, no, that was a lie. The differences were subtle but there and Amity’s face turned red in rage from it. Why her brain thought this of all versions of Luz was something she wanted was entirely beyond her but the serious girl wasn’t going to put up with it.

So, instead of asking the smiling boy any questions or telling him off for having now indeed made this dream a nightmare, Amity simply threw her arm back, curled her fingers into a fist, and swung.

Amity groaned as she half opened her eyes. Her brain hurt from how angry she’d gotten in the last iteration but she really hoped that it had gotten the clue now. After all, if it hadn’t, she was going to start screaming until it did.

This version of the dream didn’t feel too bad though, not immediately. Her ears wiggled to let her know that she was back to being a witch so that was one thing. Why it decided she had to be absolutely exhausted though was beyond her, but she didn’t care. In fact, it felt a lot like the first scenario she’d been placed in. Sleeping on the couch, stiff from the pain of it, but she wasn’t on top of Luz this time.

Or, yet, she thought as she looked to the other side of the couch and spotted the human in her bleary vision. She knew Luz was human this time though because she couldn’t see her ears this time, which, even in her dead tired state, Amity would have been able to if they were witches ears. They were also back in the Owl House and their right ages, so those two were out of the equation. Or she at least hoped with the idea of Luz knowing the first thing about what Amity’s reality was.

She wasn’t going to leave the last one up to chance though. Not with how badly she just wanted to cuddle with her crush. So, instead of being any sort of subtle, Amity slinked over, pressed her body against Luz’s, and placed her hands on the other girl’s chest. She then enjoyed the softness under her fingers before nuzzling her face there as her arms wrapped around Luz and she whispered, “There’s my Luz. Human, weird, and a girl. Just as I want it.”

She then shut her eyes to slip back to sleep. She was already gone before Luz’s shaking arms slipped around Amity and the normally cheerful girl managed to shut her mouth for the first time in two hours. She even managed the smallest of smiles as she slipped back to sleep too. After all, she really needed to hear that right now. For her nightmare to relent for even a second.

Eda then sipped her cup of blood as Lilith said, “So, no more dream link potions?”

The Owl Lady growled for a second at the thought. She’d just had to watch her student sob in her sleep for two hours from whatever the two had concocted together and she never wanted to see that again. She didn’t even want to think about it and so focused on Amity before forcing a smirk to her lips. “Nope, but what are we going to do when the Blight kid wakes up?”

Lilith hummed for a second as she tried not to think about what they might have just put Luz through herself. “I think we better prop the door open before she smacks into it when she tries to run.”

“I mean, we’d be able to keep her around then and hey, who knows? Maybe she’ll just end up confessing during her concussion.”

“I thought we agreed that those sorts of plans were a bad idea now.”

“Oh yeah.” Eda took another sip of her blood before looking at the door and saying, “Hooty, keep yourself open so Amity doesn’t hurt herself.”

Unfortunately, Amity missed the door when she realized that the last iteration hadn’t been a dream and instead bounced off the wall next to the door hard enough to have to be taken to the hospital. Luz, for her part, couldn’t stop smiling for most of the day from knowing her crush didn’t care about anything that ran through her brain about the two of them. She just wished she knew why Amity had said that in her sleep. It’s not like the two could have had the same nightmare after all.

It would also be about a week before Amity washed her hands and that was only because Edric and Emira pointed out that they were caked in about five layers of abomination gunk at that point and coming to life when she summoned other monsters.
