《A World to Call My Own》The Start of a Journey, Part 3

As we continued to travel westward, I continued to hone my wind magic. By the end of the day, I was able to summon a small gust of wind on command. While I thought my mastery was rather impressive, both mother and Lucina told me that I still had a long way to go.
"With your fire magic," mom explained, "the creation of the fire on the palm of your hand is a huge step towards mastering the element." She glanced up at dad, who nodded his agreement. "Unlike other elements, fire is used primarily either in long range offensive spells or to augment physical attacks but does not provide much utility. Thus, controlling the exact shape and size of a magical fire is comparably less important. Air, on the other hand, relies completely on the control you have over the element."
Mother pointed at a cup of water, which began floating in the air. "The amount of magical potential needed to equal the destructive power of fire means air mages must rely on precision, not power, to achieve their goals. The gust of wind you summoned is roughly equivalent to summoning a spark in the palm of your hand: while important, it is merely the first brick upon which you build your foundation of air magic."
Mom set the cup of water back down. Ripples appeared on the surface, but not a single drop spilled out. "We're going to set up camp for the night around here, I think. It's getting dark pretty fast." Ajax grunted assent as he hopped off the driver's seat, tying the horses to a nearby tree.
As the rest of the group piled out of the wagon, we look at the horizon to see my father and Frank staggering over the horizon. It had been quite a long trip, and Mia had steadily refused all their requests to be allowed back onto the wagon. Reaching our little campsite, my father dramatically threw himself on the ground, groaning in mock agony. Behind him, Frank fell to his knees and began gasping in a greatly exaggerated manner, clutching his chest.
Mother's eyes widened for a second, and a look of concern flashed over her face as she stepped forward to make sure the two men were alright. As she drew closer, my father was unable to keep a smirk off his face. Seeing that he was alright, and feeling slightly foolish for worrying about the pair, mom gently prodded dad with her boot. "Get up, you overdramatic monkey," she laughed. "Go get some firewood, will you? Seems the only two things you're good at nowadays is being a bad example to Gilan and providing the manual labor we need around here."
By the time father came back with the firewood, the rest of the group had already set up a cozy campsite. As we finished stacking the firewood and kindling into a neat little triangle, dad gestured at the firepit while the other members all look at me expectantly. "Well?" dad asked. "What are you waiting for? I'm sure they're all very eager to see your fire magic."

Reaching out, I focused intently on the little pile of sticks. The tinder at the top of the firepit began to smoke, and sparks flew out in all directions. Then, suddenly, woooooooosh! Rather than a small flame on the kindling, the entire pile of wood ignited at once, sending orange flames shooting out a meter into the air.
Frank, who had been leaning in and watching the wood pile intently, yelped and leaped backwards, frantically brushing sparks off his shirt. As the rest of the Knightly Bards laughed uproariously, Ajax lumbered over and placed a massive hand over my shoulder.
"Good job, kiddo," he rumbled. "That was quite the impressive fire you got going there."
Looking up at the mountain of a man, I suddenly realized just how much he looked like a teddy bear. Then again, the massive war hammer on his back dissuaded the fluffy comparison quite swiftly. "Thanks, Mr. Ajax," I said. He gave me a thumbs up and walked back to his seat, plopping down with a force that caused a rather alarming sound to come out of the chair.
As the night went on, the Knightly Bards laughed and talked around the fire, trading stories of their recent adventures and reminiscing about the time that they were all a team. All seven of them, including my parents, had originally come from a small coastal town near Furness city, and had traveled north to the wildlands in a bid for adventure and fame. Though they were a successful group, and each member had become a B ranked hunter, my parents had left the group once my mother started expecting a child. The life of a hunter, while rewarding, was not a good environment to raise children.
The danger of hunting rogue animals and mana beasts could very well prove fatal to a vulnerable young baby, and the distraction that protecting that baby could cause would also dangerously divide a hunter's attention. So, giving up the hunter's lifestyle, my parents had settled down in a little village near the Wildlands to raise me.
Leaning on my mothers shoulder, I gazed into the flame, the flying embers putting me into a trance. Suddenly, the embers formed the shape of a winged lion, leaping out into the air, jaws and claws pointed towards me...
Starting forwards, I rubbed my eyes. The embers fizzled away into the air, forming another pattern in the hypnotizing dance. My mother, seeing my movement, picked me up and headed towards the tent. "Alright, young man, that's late enough for you. Go to get some sleep, now. We have another long day of travel ahead of us." Tucking me into my bedroll, she gave me a quick kiss to the forehead and ducked back out of the tent.

Listening to the quiet murmurs of the hunters and the crackling of the fire, I slowly drifted to sleep.
The bear was a true apex predator. 3 meters tall, and built like a living tank, there was no animal on earth that could hope to challenge it. Anywhere that the bear went, every animal fled. But tonight, the bear was the one on the run, a score of cuts down its side dripping fresh blood. The primal instincts in it told it to hide, but there was no safety to be found. Still, the bear fled from the oncoming threat...
GILAN
The pained roar of a wounded animal echoed in the night. My eyes snapped open as I bolted upright, the hairs on my arm standing straight up. I could see my parents already stood up and reaching for their swords, their reactions not dulled a single second almost a decade after leaving the hunter's guild.
It was completely dark outside the tent, the moon obscured by the clouds. I could barely make out the silhouettes of the rest of the Knightly Bards all exiting their tents, weapons in hand. Ajax stood in front of the group, massive war hammer swinging lightly in his hands like a toy. Mia guided Lucina and Bella behind her, pounding her gauntlets together to shake off the last vestiges of sleepiness. Even Frank, who normally would have cracked a few jokes about Mia's bed hair, was silent, sword drawn and deadly serious.
My mother glanced back at my dad. "Protect Gilan," she said, unsheathing her rapier. The wind gusted around her blade, picking up the cinders from the smoldering fire. My dad grabbed me by the arms and wrapped me in a hug.
The hunters formed a circle around the camp, eyes straining to see the first sign of a threat. They didn't light a fire; any source of light would only hinder their ability to see far into the darkness. All of the hunters knew that a wounded predator catching any of them by surprise would certainly mean a grievous injury.
Out in the darkness, a movement. The shadow loomed closer, and with each step the creature took, the ground seemed to shake.
The hunters all tensed, ready for a sudden strike to come out of the darkness. The creature stalked closer and closer...
"Enough!" Frank bellowed, blasting a pillar of flame high into the sky. A wave of heat blasted through the surrounding area. The immediate vicinity illuminated, all of us turned our sights towards the prowling animal.
Illuminated by the flames was a massive bear. The animal reared on its hind legs, standing well over 3 meters tall, and roared back a challenge at the fire. It swiped its massive paws, vicious claws singing as they cut through the air.
"Come on then, you mindless beast!" Ajax stepped forward, hammer drawing an arc in the air.
The bear roared again, this time with a slight tinge of fear, then fell back on all fours and began lumbering away. The hunters relaxed, and a Mia released a light chuckle and slapped Frank on the back. "Scared of a little teddy bear, Frankie?" she teased.
"You were nervous too," Frank muttered as he staggered under the impact. "Did you see the size of that thing? That coulda eaten us all alive if we weren't carefu-"
Frank was cut off by the strangled roar of the bear. Everybody whipped around to see the massive animal slowly collapse, completely still.
"What the hell?" Lucina whispered. "What killed that bear?"
The clouds parted, and the moonlight spilled across the plain. Shadows rippled over the long grass, dancing to the tune of the wind. And... nothing. The plain was empty. Nothing in sight that could have killed that ferocious predator, yet there the body lay, an unmoving mass in the distance.
Everyone's grip on their weapons tightened. The silence in the fields suddenly became deafeningly loud. Suddenly, my mother's offhanded remark at the start of our journey flashed through my mind. She had said something about... corrupted beast?
The grass rippled around us. Suddenly, six wolves, each the size of a horse, appeared from the shadows, their silver pelts gleaming in the moonlight.
"Dire wolves," my dad whispered as he tightened his grip around me.
"Are they the corrupted beasts?" I asked.
"They are. But don't worry, your mother and the other hunters have this under control." The tremor in his voice betrayed his worry. I had read about dire wolves in the hunter's guidebook during the long travel. Larger and more powerful than any normal wolf, dire wolves were famous for their blinding speed and crushing jaws. One of the most dangerous B class beasts, they were grey wolves who had consumed enough mana from the atmosphere to gain unnatural power, but that power also turned the animals feral, as if corrupted by the mana. During a hunt, their howls were even known to paralyze their opponents in fear...
Realizing they had been seen, the largest of the wolves threw back his head and howled at the moon.

8 510Zeroth Knight re: Dawn
Isekai, fantasy, with the core themes of Identity and Fate. Story contains a, mostly, lesbian cast. Updated twice a day. Evangeline Sayagawa makes the ultimate choice at the cost of the ultimate sacrifice: She decides to leave her world that she fought so hard to return to, and return to Arsea in hopes of saving everyone. Little was she aware of just how bad things had gotten. The world she was returning to was cast into chaos and on the precipice of being destroyed. She awakens in this new kind of Arsea, after having witness the end of a dear friend. The world now belonged to the monstrosities of old, the Beta, and their corrupted human warriors, the Eld. With her fake identity, that which defined her in this world, being stripped from her, she now has to navigate a darkness in which not even the women she loves recognize her. This is book 2 of the Evangeline Sayagawa "Zeroth Knight" story, with book 1 being found here. The first "chapter" posted here is a hyper-condensed version of volume/book 1, in case anyone needs a generalized refresher of events, or for those who wish to start with this book instead as it is faster paced and more action-packed than the first one. Suffice to say, but most of the details from book 1 are lost by doing this; however, enough of the more-important information is present to allow one to understand the general idea of what is going on. This book features a mostly lesbian cast and deals more so with fate and crises of identity more than anything else. However, there is much more action in this one than any of my other stories thus far and brings about the end of Evangeline Sayagawa's story arch... sort of. I have another story up, a short story drama with light yuri and supernatural themes: "Escape The KNIGHT" Share the story if you think it's good. And please rate some stars and leave reviews guys. It will help encourage other people to take a chance with the story and get to know this wonderful journey with us. Also, a friend has made a Discord for the "Zeroth Universe" if anyone wants to join and hang out to talk about the stories, theories, or just general fun chats with us! https://discord.gg/f3Bc4TR Follow me on Twitter @Ozefen0 to stay up to date on my stories and what have you.
