>Be Evan
>Apply for job at Kensington Metropark, turn in application to park office.
>Don't hear anything for weeks.
>Then, in early May, receive a phone call from a man with a brusque voice who asks if he can come in for an interview at 8 AM the following day.
>Evan moseys up to the park office the next morning. It's a rectangular, brick building at the top of a hill on the park's north end.
>Secretary directs him to a seat in a small lunchroom.
>At 8 sharp, a huge tattooed biker fellow with chest length beard comes in and sits down.
>Howdy, he says. Rex Reedy.
>He extends a huge hand. Evan offers his.
>Evan Barker.
>They shake.
>Rex looks at Evan's one-page resume.
>Haven't done much yet, have you?
>Yeah, says Evan. I only just got a car a little while ago.
>You ever cleaned before?
>Uh, no.
>You gotta problem cleaning up people's crap? Cause that's gonna happen. We see some heinous shit around here. And I mean that literally.
>No, I think I can handle it.
>Rex nods, looks over his resume a few more times.
>Hours are 6 to 2. Can you start Monday?
>Yeah, sure, great, says Evan. He's relieved—he'll finally have his own income.
>Great, see you then. Now get out of here and enjoy your last few days of freedom.
>They shake again.
>Rex gets up and is about to leave but then he stops.
>How old are you?
>20. I'll be 21 on the 17th.
>My daughter's two years younger than you. You got a girlfriend?
>No, says Evan. Why?
>She's single, says Rex. You seem like a smart enough kid. Maybe you could talk some sense into her. I haven't felt close to her since she went on the rag.

>I guess, says Evan. He wonders what Hannah looks like.
>You gotta do me one favor, though, Evan, if you start working here.
>What's that?
>You gotta not talk so much. Jesus, man, I mean, you're fucking killing me here with all the talking you're doing.
>Evan gives a nervous laugh. He decides he likes Rex.
>I'll try to, you know, talk more.
>Rex shakes Evan's hand again.
> See you Monday. 6 AM.

8 385Glitched! Uplift Arc
[Winner of the April 22 Royal Road Writathon Challenge] In 2202 the System reached Earth. Thankfully it had learnt from previous uplifts and implemented an introductory arc to acclimatise the new participants rather than chucking them in the deep end. The previous practice of just dumping unsuspecting beings into a System designed for the growth of the multiverse had led to catastrophic and sub-optimal results. The return on investment was abysmal. That old trope was so over-cooked - after nearly extinguishing itself through negative returns new policy was required. That was 356 trillion local years back. Now over 5600 successful uplifts had joined the ranks of the multiverse. But the System was always learning, always growing. Still there were glitches. Mostly minor. Mere irritants really. Sometimes even they were catalysts, triggering a fresh expansion. Soon the System would understand why. Our Earth was 7912th. - Ascend - Battle - Challenge - Dominate - Expand - Gro... - Glor... - Where’s the eff word? - Glitch... File corrupted. ---END SYN---

8 75The Legend of Fanaura: Cursed
'Hey, need some help there?' An unfamiliar voice echoed through her mind, and she startled, losing her grip on the red phial. It rolled through the grass, away from her. "Oh shoot!" she yelped, and her focus diverted from her opponent for a split second, but it was enough to prove fatal. The beast took advantage of her distraction and lunged towards her. She tried to back away, but in her haste, she stumbled and fell. She looked at the beast, inches away from her, and shut her eyes in fear. She raised her arms to cover her head, even if she knew it was futile. Yet seconds passed, and no pain came. Then she heard the beast let out a pained yelp. She opened her eyes to the familiar sounds of battle before her. A tall man stood before her, locked in battle with the beast. He wielded a sword as long as his height, yet it didn't seem to hinder him in the slightest. She watched in awe as he swung the obviously heavy sword around as if it were light as a feather. His movements were swift and precise, and it didn't take long before the beast fell to the ground, motionless. “You alright there, miss?” The man sheathed his sword across his back, before turning to her. Her eyes widened when she heard his voice. It was the same voice who had that had spoken into her mind and the cause of her almost-fatal distraction. "You...!" she hissed.***She was the chosen one to end the war between the Goddesses when they were supposed to take care of the world balance. But when she woke up in another body, she realized that she can't outrun her fate. Being reborn in the same world after the end of the Goddesses war in a pre-apocalyptic situation, she knew she needs to face her fate as the cursed heroine. But her path won't be easy as darkness lurks and hidden between her friends and comrades waiting to punch her in the back and ruined her journey of redemption and world saving. Would she succeed or succumbed once more?
