《Bastion Of Heroes》Chapter 34

After a quick shower and changing to the original cloth that Seth came in, he proceeded to head towards the cafeteria that Jacks had introduced earlier on his ‘tour’ around the Federation Building.

The food sold in the cafeteria was no gourmet meal. It was all packaged quick food such as sandwiches and chips, food that could be eaten on the go in case of emergencies. That didn’t stop Seth from purchasing a two ham sandwiches as he was ravenous from all the earlier activity. He didn’t want to think what Jacks had in store for them later.

As Seth was looking for a seat to eat his meal, his eyes wonder to a certain figure already digging into his own sandwich. There was five wrapped sandwiches in a pile in front of Kong as was in the midst of devouring the sixth sandwich. There was an empty seat in front of Kong, so Seth decided to join him.

“Excuse me, is there anyone sitting here?” Seth motion to the empty seat. It was always better to be polite, especially if they were going to be working as fellow interns.

Kong merely grunted and threw the rest of his sandwich into his mouth, then began to open up the next sandwich. Seth couldn’t tell if what the grunt was, but assumed that no one was sitting there. He sat down and began to working on his own meal.

Two sandwiches and a bag of chips later, Seth body was beginning to feel much better. Kong was also on his last sandwich. There was still time before they needed to head to Jacks office, so he tried to get to know his fellow intern better. Hopefully he was too exhausted to try to start a fight again.

“ So...uh..Kong, that was some run, huh?” Seth said as he couldn’t think of anything else to say.

This only earned a glare from Kong, then he returned back to finishing his last sandwich.

Seth’s first attempt ended in massive failure. That didn’t stop him from trying again.

“How did your interview go? They asked me a bunch of questions and had me fight somebody. Did you have to do the same thing?”

“...” The only sound that came from Kong was the one of chewing.

Second attempt failed. Maybe third times the charm?

“So I don’t think I ever saw you before in town? Which school do you go to?”

Kong ignored the question and began to tear into a bag of barbeque chips.

Seth released a sigh. His attempts ended in complete failure. Just as he was about to leave his seat to throw his garbage out, Kong opened his mouth. Maybe it wasn’t a complete failure?

“Look, you don’t have to try to be friends with me. I’m not here to make friends. Especially with you. You still owe me a fight, don’t forget that. The only reason I'm here is because these bastards kept on annoying me until I agreed to come in for the internship.”

Seth blinked. Kong wasn’t charging at him like had earlier in the day. Seth consider that a success and decided to ask the question he was curious about while Kong was still being ‘friendly’. So how exactly did they make you come in?”

“Those bastards kept harassing me. Every time I was online, they made sure I couldn’t do anything. All I got was a message that said ‘The Federation request your presence. Then the message multiplies until it takes over the whole screen! You know how annoying that is?”

“They can do that? Isn’t it...illegal?”

“Hah! Doesn’t matter if it legal or not! They'll still do it. i swear if I ever find out who was the on messing with me the whole time, I'll make them eat my fist.”

...

Kong Kravos was a simple man.

He did what he like and refused the things he didn’t like.

What he liked was punching things. There was a certain satisfaction with your fist blowing someone away, especially with someone you didn’t like. If the person is still there, then you only needed to keep punching them until they goes away. That was why Kong prefer fighting in person.

However, you can’t fight your way through large groups of people or organizations.

Organizations like the Federation.

Kong doesn’t trust institutions and organizations.

He understood that they are necessary for the populace, but that doesn’t mean he have to like them. Large groups tend to forget about the small stuff They have all the power in the world, but they use it for themselves.

All the abandon people on the streets, he seen it for himself. The old, the weak, the young, and the powerless. Hell, he was one of the people who experienced it.

Kong didn’t know who his parents were. HIs uncle raised him, a friend of his parents. They passed not long after he was born. They worked as mercenaries for a large company, and promises were made that the family would be well taken care of if the worst were to happen.

The worst happened and the promises were not kept.

It was not easy to raise a child on your own and his uncle tried to get the money that was promised in court. The company bribed the judge and lawyers to see it their way and deny Kong’s uncle case.

Not that Kong personally experienced all this, he was too young when it all happened. This was all told to him by his uncle when he was a bit older. He pitied Kong who was denied of his parent’s love at a young age.

Not that Kong was looking for pity. He found pity to be quite useless. He took the story in stride and just continued with his life. There was no point in seeking vengeance. His parents weren’t strong enough. Plain and simple.

As a child he spent a lot of times roaming the streets as his Uncle worked long hours. Warnings were given but ignored. Not that Kong ever paid attention to those warnings in the first place. He went out on his own and explore the city and a child’s curiosity was boundless. Left to his own devices, he made his way all around the city.

Oasis City was a relatively safe city. There were no major gangs in the city as they have discovered early on there wasn’t much business to do here. However, that did not mean all the city was safe. There are always some shady areas where criminal elements exist. Unruly people who would take advantage of the young and helpless. It didn’t long for Kong to run into trouble.

Now one would think a child of the age 5 would be helpless, and you wouldn’t be wrong. However, it was due to Kong’s first altercation that when push come to shove, Kong learned that he shoved back pretty hard.

That was his first lesson and he would learn much more as he grew older.

The streets acted as Kongs parents, more than his actual parents. On the streets there was no problems he couldn’t solve with his own two fist. There was no problem he couldn’t punch his way out of. He gained a reputation for his strength and violence among the Awaken.

The Rooftop challenge was one of the most enjoyable things encounters in his life. A place that that you could fight to your heart’s content? It sounded like a dream. Hell, he even sign up for free if it allowed to beat up as many people as he wanted. Things were good for a while.

That was probably when the Federation became aware of him now that he thought of it. When he was knocked unconscious that night, he swore he’ll beat up the tiger guy and knife punk that day.

The very same punk that sat in front of him now.

Hard to believe that the punk that fought him and with him that night was the very same punk sitting in front of him now. He look so ...meek and innocent. Hard to believe that this guy in front of him was the same person.

Kong would never admit it out loud, but this guy was a fighter. Not the kind that Kong preferred. Personally, Kong like the fights where you trade blows with your opponent until the last one standing wins. This punk was the opposite. His style was to dodge and weave through his punches like snake before making a counter. Kong met those kind of fighters before and found them annoying. It doesn’t matter if you have all the speed in the world if one punch is good enough to knock you out. He always smashed right through them for such arrogance.

On the other hand, The bastard in front of him was the real deal.

Which was why when he was running with him on the field this morning, he refused to lose this punk. When he saw him jogging at a slow pace, Kong scoffed at him. Later when he began passing him, it only pissed him off. That was why he refused to stop until the bastard stopped first. He didn’t use his awaken abilities to run. It felt like he would lose something if he did.

Thinking back Kong would not have seen this guy again if the Federation hadn’t come looking for him.

Literally.

When someone came looking for Kong, saying they were from the Federation, he thought it was a scam like one those door-to-door salesmen. He ignored them. He did the same to the second person that came along. And the third. He wasn’t interested in anything the Federation had to offer him.

That was when things got really annoying.

When he tried to use his phone or any device for the matter, he would receive messages saying the Federation request his presence. The message would pop up once an hour which he promptly ignored. Then after the first day, the message would flood whatever machine that could receive communication that he used. On the third day whenever Kong tried to enter a store, the alarm would go off. The ringing would not stop until he left.

It didn’t take a genius to figure out who was behind all this.

Technology wasn’t Kong’s strong suit, but he knew some people who were great with it. When he consulted them, they were not willing to risk going against the Federation.

So Kong had no choice to comply with their request.

And that was how he ended up in his current position.

***

When Seth had heard what the Federation did to Kong, it scared him.

It was such an outright abuse of power, but who could condemn them? The Federatio was the biggest military organization around.

Although Seth could believe why they did it. After meeting Kong, his personality was a bit...much. If they didn’t employ such methods, Kong would never be here in the first place.

Once Kong finish his roof, they made their way to Jack’s office. In there, they found large pile of reports with sticky note on top.

Hey boys! Read and summarize each report for me. Use those accounts to find information if you don’t understand anything. Have fun!

Seth could only look at the pile of papers that were as large as his arm in dismay. Kong had a different reaction after reading the note.

“Aw Hell no. I’m out.”
