《Bastion Of Heroes》Chapter 29

It was inevitable.

No matter what Seth did, he couldn’t fight it.

It was completely involuntary.

It was something that not even science could fully explain.

Seth knew this was going to happen. It was only a matter of time.

He could feel it growing deep down, and no matter what he did, it didn’t stop.

It was a pointless battle that could never be won.

So Seth did the smart thing.

He gave up and let nature take its course.

His body released from his manual control allowed the natural process to happen. The pressure built from his lungs slowly made its way up to his mouth. The action that he had been preventing this whole time finally decides to take its course.

He yawned.

A big gulp of air made its way into Seth’s mouth and down into his lungs. Once he started yawning, he could not stop. Once one yawn finished, his mouth would open once again to release another. He just couldn’t help himself. He just couldn’t stop asking the same question over and over again.

Why did he need to go to the Federation Building so early in the morning?

Right now was close to 6 AM. The sun itself had barely shown itself and was slowly climbing towards the sky. The few people he had passed by, all look equally as sleepy. Some were holding cups of coffee in their hands which was starting to look like a decent idea to Seth, even if he generally avoided the caffeinated beverage. He never quite understood the appeal of coffee.

Seth knew the answer to his question. He knew why he had to go, but he just could not stop asking why so early. It was more in the form of complaining than anything else.

For a teenager, waking up this early was a crime, especially during summer vacation. He didn’t even wake up this early for school. If anything, the act of waking up before six in the morning should be consider unlawful.

Seth finally dragged his lethargic body to the Federation Building entrance. A few people could be seen making their way into the building. Interesting enough was that the two security guards he encountered that day were also standing there.

“Hey it’s Seth right? Didn’t see you for awhile, so I didn’t think you made the cut. But you’re here now! I take it you passed?”

“Yea, it was... Rick right?” The security guard confirmed his answer with a nod. “It took about a week to review everything. I only just got the call and they told me to come in today. I’m surprised to see you guys are here so early.”

“That’s great news. We have to be here when the building opens. Scratch that, security guards like us need to be here before the building opens.”

“What time do you guys need to be here then?”

“It varies really. Standard opening times are 5 in the morning We need to report in ten to fifteen minutes before to run checks amongst other things. Same with closing. After we close the front doors, there was things that need to be done.”

Seth could only visibly wince at that answer. He had thought he had woke up early, but it turned out that there were people right in front of him who woke up even earlier. Rick caught the wince and nodded his head once again.

“Yea, I totally agree that it’s too early to be waking up. What is a man suppose to do though? I was unlucky to be assign the morning shift this week. I’m telling you I prefer the evening shift. It takes a lot out of you to wake up so early and everyone is still working when you get out from a morning shift. It’s no fun. Sometimes I got to do a double shift. A back-to-back shift. Can you believe that? As if I'm not tired enough for one shift. Some of the people I deal with-”

“AHEM,” The guard next to him cleared his throat.

“What is it Ryan?” Rick ask as he turned his head to face the other security guard.

“You’re running your mouth again,” a short reply came.

“My bad! Looks I held you up Seth. Just go on ahead.” Rick gave a friendly pat on Seth’s shoulder and moved out of Seth’s way.

“No problem, I’ll see you around.” Seth moved on and gave the other security guard an appreciative nod as he moved past the entrance doors.

Seth was once again greeted by the lobby once he made it past the door. The only thing different was that there was only one secretary manning the desk, instead the two like the first time he came. It was one he had talked to last time, so Seth didn’t feel awkward walking up to her. She saw Seth coming in and greeted him.

“Hello! Welcome to the National United Federation Branch Office! How may I help you?”

“Hi, I was told to report in for the first day of my internship?”

“I can help you with that. Can you just tell me your name? Do you also have any form of identification?”

“Does the school ID work?”

“That will work if you do not have any other forms of identification.”

Seth handed her his high school ID and told her his name. The secretary typed a few things into the computer and then said “Someone will be here for you shortly. Just take a seat and I'll notify you when they arrive.”

“Sure.” Seth said and moved to one of the sofas in the empty seating area. There was a few magazines about current trends on the side. Seth decided to take one and browse through it. Workers in formal attire could be seen entering and passing through the doors. Not long after, he heard a door open and his name being called. He looked up and saw it was Sheila who came out once again to meet him.

“Good morning, Seth. There are a few documents that need to be signed for legal purposes.”, Sheila said and led Seth to a conference room where they both took a seat. She took some document out of a folder and gave it to Seth. “Read these over and sign them. If there are any questions, feel free to ask me.”

Seth looked at the paper given to him. The document handed to Seth was a contract with a lengthy description. It stated the duties that Seth was expected to perform during his stay here. Some of the wording was normal, if not sounding overly formal. For example, the individual shall per perform their duties to the best of their capabilities.

There was one sentence though that made Seth blink. He read it twice just to make sure. The line stated:

The Federation shall not be held responsible for the death of individual if result of neglectful actions.

For an internship contract, it was quite the ominous line.
