《Bastion Of Heroes》Chapter 10

“AAAANNNNDDDDD there we have it folks! A brave new challenger! A never before seen new fighter has stepped up to the bat. Is this new fighter just bold and reckless or does he actually have the skills to back it up? We’re about to find out! Don’t forget to place your bets!”
One of the drones shines a light on Seth as he walked up to King Kong. Seeing this person so close was different from watching a far. Seth looked at his opponent as he recalled his master’s words.
Observation is the key to every battle. Notice every detail of your opponent and the environment. Their eyes tell you their thoughts. Equipment tells you battle style. Scars tell stories of their experience and weaknesses that you may be able to exploit in combat. Noticing these key details will be the difference between life and death.
Half a head taller than Seth, King Kong stood there waiting for his next challenger. Confidence, bordering on the line of arrogance emitted from King Kong, at least that what Seth felt. Seth had seen previous videos of fights King Kong had participated in, but videos could not capture the threatening atmosphere that he released. Seth felt as if he was in front of a caged beast ready to lash out at any moment.
Seth stopped a few feet away from King Kong, waiting for the referee to start the match. Seth felt his own body shivering. Be it from excitement or nervousness, he couldn’t tell. The drones shined their lights on both combatants as the crowd waited eagerly for the bloodshed to start. They didn’t care who it was as long as someone was spitting blood at the end. Seth let out a breath to relax his nerves and got into a fighting stance as King Kong did the same.
“ Are both fighters ready? THEN BEGIN!”

Immediately a fist came flying at Seth’s face, and he moved his head to dodge the blow by a narrow margin. Seth jumped back to dodge the following blow, a left hook aiming for his side. King Kong followed Seth move by matching his step and releasing a barrage of punches at Seth. While each blow was fast, it wasn’t anything Seth couldn’t handle. Then Seth heard a unfamiliar voice coming from the monkey masked fighter
“Not bad! Let’s kick it up a notch.”
Instantly the atmosphere around King Kong intensified. The punches before were just a test to see if Seth was a worthy opponent, or just clueless challenger. If he failed he would have been knocked out right away.
King Kong’s next strike was aiming for his head. The sudden increase in speed had surprised Seth as he blocked it with his left arm and knocking him a few feet back. It felt as if he was hit by a boulder as his arm throbbed with pain.
Can’t take too many direct hits, Seth thought. He saw the next punch coming, a left hook aiming for his stomach. He deftly blocked it and returned the favor with a punch to King Kong’s head.
Seth had expected King Kong to dodge the blow. What he didn’t expect was King Kong taking the strike on purpose. It felt as he was hitting a boulder.
King Kong merely turned his for a fraction of an inch with Seth’s fist still on face and grinned. He said “That’s it? I was expecting much more.”
The judges voice boomed from the loudspeakers. “They punch! They dodge! Now it seems our new fighter was able to land a nice clean hit on King Kong! Is it enough to turn the match?”
No. Far from it, Seth judged. He immediately took a step back. Just in time to dodge a punch aimed at his stomach.

“Come on! You got more than that right? Show your me what got. Unless you’re a normal?” questioned King Kong.
The whole point of coming to today match was to test his abilities on an actual opponent. There was only so much a person can take from training with puppets and mind training. While it did provide versatile enemies, they were all inanimate beings. Seth wanted to see how he would do with his skills on a live opponent.
What better way to test his combat skills than a past champion?
Seth could only agree with King Kong’s statement and get serious. He circulated his chi throughout his body and charged forward. His fist once again flew towards King Kong, but this time his fist was charged with chi.
King Kong seem to have sense that this strike was different compared to the previous blows. He lifted his arms in an effort to block and protect his face. Whatever thought or instinct made King Kong raise both his arms, he didn’t know. He just felt a sense of danger and reacted instinctively.
And he was right.
King was sent flying several feet back. He was still on standing, but he flapped his arms as if to wave off the pain. He laughed and said “You’ve been holding back on me this whole time! Now let the fun begin!” This time it was King Kong’s turn to rush forward at Seth.
The match began to evolve much differently than when it had begun.
In the beginning, Seth could only dodge King Kong’s blows. Now he was able to dodge and return some hits. For every two strikes, Seth was able to return a hit. Seth’s current speed was incomparable to how he was in the beginning. It was as if he evolved from a cat to a cheetah.
Every time King Kong tried to hit Seth, Seth would duck or weave through it. Then he returns the punch with one of his owns. They were much more effective as King Kong could be seen grimacing after each hit. However no matter how times King Kong was hit, he endured. Finally growing tired of the match, Seth decide to end it. He circulated more chi then usual into his right hand and punched his opponent.
“Burst fist.”
Boom!
It was as if a mini explosion had gone off and King Kong was sent flying backwards. He had tried to dodge, but the damage from Seth’s hit must have accumulated, hindering his ability to respond properly.
Burst fist was one of the few chi techniques that Seth could perform. It gathered a person’s chi and compressed it several times before releasing on impact. It was a simple, but effective technique.
HIs master always did say that you don’t need to know a lot of techniques, you just need to know how to use them efficiently.
Unfortunately, the blow was not enough to finish King Kong. He looked a bit batter from all the hits he took from Seth, but none worse for wear. He seems to just shake off the damage and laughed. He pointed at Seth and said “You’re much better than I thought. It looks like you’re getting tired of me. Too bad for you, King Kong’s just getting started. LET’S G-URGHK!”
A kneel out of nowhere sent the gorilla masked fighter flying. Seth could only gape in surprise just like everyone from the audience on the floor above.
It seems the fight between King Kong and Seth had come to an unexpected conclusion.

Toothpick
“Hello! My humble audience! I, the Bard of the North, am going to tell you a tale. Nothing new, nothing old. A story of a hero, some may say, others a poor boy who was hated by the world.” The storyteller paused as he waited, right timing was everything when telling a story. Pacing… Too slow and the audience became bored then left without tossing even the smallest of coins. If he spoke too fast and rushed the story. It would leave the audience confused and having no reason to be impressed. So like any good storyteller, the Bard has to do a balancing act of sorts. Not too slow, not too fast. Just perfectly in the middle. “In a shattered country in the south, a novice princeling has the ambition to mend a torn tapestry that is his birthplace. Struggling to fend off those who would usurp the throne in an unending civil war spanning centuries. A mercenary that left only death in his wake, unable to stave off the monotony and peace of life. He looks back at the path laden with bodies, wondering if it was all worth it. Wandering souls summoned by a madman, travel away from a wasteland in a foreign land, the first alone, the others as companions. A deity, ancient in her years, waiting to be freed from a duty she no longer enjoys. For all these people and their stories, none are the hero of this tale. No, the hero is not grand, not wise, not ready.. he was punished for nothing of his doing, who was an outcast that was unloved by many, including his father.” This was always the big reveal novices use to jump off into their story. He did not start here, instead, like any good fishermen, he set the bait and waited until the fish bit before pulling. As he saw the audience's eyes focus, he then started the backstory. The harness, that stopped the listeners from having metaphorical whiplash. The foreshadowing. “But that is not where the story starts. No, not even the hero's birth. Where the story begins, is the boredom of the deity, a deity many know of. She who hunts for the impossible, the guide for those who have lost the path, the Huntress of Mallon--” A small pause, a short breath. “--All old names for a single powerful being that has roamed the grounds of this continent longer than any line of kings or queens, lords or ladies. A being of worship for many an individual…” One last breath. And he began singing the first verse.
