《Unknown Past》Volume 1 Chapter 4: Much to Learn, Part 8: Chates' Perspective
Advertisement
I am who I am. And I hate who I am. To be someone else. What do they see in me? How would they see me, if they truly knew everything about me? Like my brother does. Like she did.
"Chates." I hear my brother's voice say through our communication crystal.
"Yeah?" I reply, still in the form of the cloaked boy.
"How'd things go on your end?"
"Without a hitch."
"If possible, please come back here to..."
"Not now."
"And why's that?"
"I have a few more characters to add to the act."
Silence ensues for a few seconds. As always, whenever Dodge disapproves.
"Alright..."
"Wait, you're actually letting me?"
"As I said once before, I trust you. Out here, you're the only one I trust."
"Thanks," I say and hang up.
Well, it's time to get things rolling.
A loving sibling. Him to her as Dodge to me. Perhaps even more so towards her brother. That is the woman who will play a part in this tale. This tale of doubt and betrayal. This tale that will shake the enemy's confidence. That is the character I seek.
This...Sueka Tsurai.
It's been a pain digging into that cloaked kid's background, but I was finally able to learn of his weakness. Or strength, in many ways. The reason he keeps on going. His reason for opposing us. Reminds me of the fact that Keisetsu members are still human, and not just weapons of war.
Let's see. Sueka's IQ: Low 80s. Her strength: about 150% of an average animal tone. Personality: yandere. At least that's what I've heard. Body structure? ...A little extreme in some areas, even for animal tones. Vegan. Job experience only as a waitress and farmer. Greatest asset: she's bilingual and gifted when it comes to picking up new languages.
...Okay...Okay...Time to get things started.
I sprint towards the apartment of Miss Tsurai and her brother. I must say, despite not having a lot of stamina, this boy's body is amazing. It's so strong and fast! Um...anyway, get back into character. I quickly pull out a sling and put what should be my broken arm into it. If I timed this correctly, Sueka should already be back here, while this Oren character is elsewhere. I left that to Dodge. Okay...3...2...1...

"Hey, sis," I say in Oren's voice, "I'm back."
"Hey, Oren! You're back earlier than I thought!"
I walk into the apartment and see Sueka cooking. Some kind of pasta by the look of it.
"Honestly," I begin to say, "there are more complications with those guys than you'd think."
"I'll bet."
She begins to put the vegetables into the pot. I cannot deny, the smell is quite appealing. It's definitely better than all the other food here in this hellhole. I walk over to the table, and sit down.
"How're are things going in your case?" I ask.
"You just saw me today, so you can guess."
"You're at least trying. That's all that matters."
She smiles back at me, then focuses on her cooking once more.
Okay...It's time.
"Um...Sueka?"
"Yes?"
"I'd...like to talk to you about something."
"Sure?"
"Okay, here goes. If possible...I'd like it if we could discuss departure plans."
"So soon? Well, that's fine with me. We'll have to think about when we should..."
"Sis."
"Um...yes?"
"I'm talking about your departure."
She freezes up and remains motionless.
"Brother?"
"Sis. You know how much I care for you, right? And it's because I care about you that I want the best for you. Look around you. This isn't the life I want for you. I don't want you to live in a run-down apartment in a corrupt city. You deserve better. That's why I've decided to pool all the money that I can to get you out of..."
"And..." she says, "what about you?"
"I will stay here and work hard to pay my way out of here as well."
"Brother, I don't want to..."
"And after I leave, I'll need some time to learn more about myself before I can return to you."
"Brother, this isn't..."

"I don't know how long this will take, but I have to make good on my promises to father and also avenge those who..."
"BROTHER!!"
I look up startled to see Sueka with tears running down her sad face.
"Brother, what are you saying!?"
"It's for the best. I'm doing this for you."
"How can you say that!? What about how I feel about this!?"
"Father asked me to take care of you, and this is the best..."
"OREN, STOP!!"
"I'm doing this for you, Sueka!"
She comes over to me and...BEAR HUG!!! Ouch!! Ow!! Does the original really go through this on a daily basis!?
"Brother, please! Please don't leave me! I've already parted with too many people! I don't want to be alone. Please, stay with...!"
She begins to smell me as if she were a dog.
"You smell funny..." she says coldly.
"Um...sis?"
"You smell funny........."
She begins to...squeeze me all the tighter!
"WHO ARE YOU!?!?"
She tosses me towards the wall.
BASHIN!!!
(Ow... It's a good thing this kid's body is durable.)
I quickly look up to see Sueka in the air, ready to dropkick me in the face.
"Sis! What are you!?"
"You're not my Oren!"
"Honestly, how am I not!?"
"Your smell! You may be able to imitate him! You may know a lot about him! But you don't smell at all like him!"
Damn! I continue to forget that I cannot change my odor with my rhime powers.
I get up and somersault to the left of her dropkick.
"And my brother would never say such things!"
I quickly get up.
"Are you certain?"
"What are you saying!?"
"A boy who cares deeply for his sister, but continues to make mistakes. What wouldn't he do for you?"
She shows signs of increasing anger, but cannot bring herself to attack me. It seems...she doesn't know.
Good.
"I may be an imitation, and I cannot deny that the actions are foolish, but as you said, I was able to imitate him quite well. I know the kind of boy he is. Who's to say he wouldn't do such things? He knows very little, and is prone to making many mistakes. Wouldn't it be wise for him to not get you involved in his troubles?"
"He wouldn't abandon me, though!!"
She throws a reckless left punch at me. I turn around, backfip over her, and land near the door.
"Say what you will, but don't be surprised if this foolish brother of yours does such a thing. Love is both a blessing and a curse. And lack of knowledge only makes his decisions more foolish. You'll see, my lovely young lady..."
I transform into the figure of Sueka.
"You'll see," I say back in my new form. I quickly leap over the balcony and prepare my escape.
"GET BACK HERE!!!" Sueka yells, attempting to chase me.
I transform back into Oren's form. She's recklessly chasing me, forgetting all about the meal she was cooking.
It's a pity that she doesn't know that what I said was practically the same thing Oren said at the cafe. I was there. I heard it all. Good intentions can easily make things worse. They can also be easily misinterpreted.
Perhaps...she is just as foolish as Oren is. Those two are perfect for each other.

The Perks of Immortality
This story will no longer be updated. After living decades and dying hundreds of times, Kegan has learned that he has finally passed some test that the cruel spirit had given him. Now, Kegan has the ability to gain “perks” that can make his life much easier. He is looking forward to finally having an easy life with the new perks he has earned. Rules to keep me honest for the perk system: Spoiler: Spoiler 1. The purpose of perks is to help the MC live longer and do new things each life. 2. The perks can be unlocked by getting hurt or killed. 3. The perks can be unlocked by putting in a lot of effort that isn’t easily duplicated in a new life. 4. Perks are generally beneficial enhancements to the MC’s body. 5. Perk costs can be lowered with more impressive achievements to unlock them. 6. Perk costs can be lowered by repeated death or injury from something the perk protects against. 7. Perk costs are increased for quality of life improvements that don’t benefit survival. I want to avoid one of the pitfalls I see for other LitRPG stories where the game elements barely relate to the story, or offer very little information. If people are skipping over and not reading the perks then I'm doing things wrong. So I promise to try and make the perks interesting, sometimes humorous, informative, and relevant to the story.Cover art by http://dertypaws.com/

Master Garner, a wizard in the scarcely populated far West of the Realm, feels the situation getting out of hand, and a violent purge forces him out of his beloved Tower. The wizard takes his apprentices and allies in search of uncertain safety in the Third Spire. Some sources of inspiration for this story, for variable reasons: Riyria Chronicles, The Wandering Inn, Gentleman Bastard series. Note: First dedicated attempt at writing. I'm looking for feedback, and I will appreciate if you point out any mistakes. Updates: Tuesday, and every other Thursday, as life allows it.
