《Unknown Past》Volume 1 Chapter 4: Much to Learn, Part 6: Oren's Perspective

The voices of the strikers get louder and louder. And more aggressive with each cry. What's happening out there? I hope this doesn't scare the children. After all, it's beginning to scare me. I pray that Sueka isn't going to get involved in this.
KAA!!!
What looked like a lightning bolt dances across the signs of the strikers.
HOOOOO!!!!
Strong gusts of wind pick up.
PPPPOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
One can see flames rising up in the distance. What started off as a warm sensation rises to uncomfortable temperatures.
"HIYA!!!!!!!!!!"
Hisashi-sama and Mai-sama close the windows. The screaming of strikers begins to fill the air. Something has happened. Something big. The sound of smashing windows and doors can be heard in the distance. The roars of animals. Collisions of the elements. Even without watching, I know what is happening.
Outside has become a warzone.
PPPPPPPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hisashi-sama and Mai-sama are pushed back from the windows as a strong force knocks them open. In a matter of seconds, the windows are engulfed in flames. Some of the children begin to run around in fear, while others cling to their teachers.
"I got this!" Yuki-sama says.
She takes a deep breath.
"Water Drive: Bubblebeam!"
She shoots large quantities of bubbles towards the flames. Unfortunately, the flames rise too fast for her subtone to have any effect.
"Can I swear now?" Chris-sama says in fear.
GUCHA!!!
The smashing of walls is heard in the distance.
GGGUUCCCHHHAAA!!!
And it's getting...
GGGUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
Through the burning door, a triceratops comes crashing, then collapsing as it's shot in the side by a policeman. The policeman, emitting unsafe quantities of ice rhime, begins to shoot at random with a crazed look in his eyes.
"Get behind me, kids!" Hisashi-sama yells to those clinging to him.
As the children begin to do so, the crazed policeman turns in their direction and starts to skate towards them on near instantly created ice. The policeman jumps up, creates a spear of ice, and prepares to skewer Hisashi-sama.

Not if I can help it.
(Soul Conversion 7...BEAT!!!)
I jump towards the policeman and headbutt him in the chest. He gets launched back into the burning wall, causing him to crash down and writhe in agony. However, this only agitates him even more. He gets up again and starts to rush towards me. I dodge his reckless spear swings. An upward spear cut knocks my broken arm out of its sling. Unknown to me, Hisashi-sama takes a good look at my arm in astonishment. As I continue to dodge, I remember...
And pull out my gun.
The crazed man stops in his tracks.
"To hell with your revolution!" he says, "If you won't obey, you don't deserve to live!"
These words...remind me of Hunter-sama.
That evil monster.
Monster.
Monster!!!
MONSTER!!!!!
I steady the gun to point at the asshole's head.
Watching me, everyone is frightened.
(So, he's just like the rest.) Hisashi-sama thinks.
I brace myself to pull the trigger. It would be only fair that I look him in the eye when I sho...
My reflection.
The reflection of someone ready to take your life away.
The reflection of a would-be murderer.
The reflection of a monster.
Suddenly I see myself through Hunter-sama's eyes. Crazed. Driven by hatred. The flames dancing around me reflected in his eyes around my silhouette. The destruction of a location. This is...what Hunter-sama must have seen.
I must...really look like Hunter-sama...
Like him...
Like...him...
My hand starts shaking, throwing off my aim.
Why? Why can't I do it? He's just like Hunter-sama! But, perhaps I am, as well. And yet I swore to kill Hunter-sama! This isn't Hunter-sama!!
My hand trembles.
(I...I can't...I can't...)
BAN-BAN!!!!!
With the sound of a gunshot, the policeman falls to the ground and dies. Behind him, holding up a pistol of their own...

Is someone in a cloak who looks exactly like me. Except without a broken arm.
"Playing the hero until the end, huh?" the figure says in a sinister voice. Ironically, a sinister version of MY voice.
"Who...who are you?"
"Who indeed. Honestly, I think I'm the better you. At least I get things done. No hesitation. No mistakes."
"What are you saying!?" I yell, taking aim at him.
"Go ahead. Pull the trigger."
My hand is still shaking.
The other me chuckles, then rushes towards me at my natural speed. He attempts to kick me. I return the blow with a countering kick.
"Wait until Selot is through with you and your loved one," he whispers.
!!
A fast round-house kick to the chest knocks me back. He quickly readies his gun and aims it at my legs.
"Wind Drive: Tornado Reach!!!!"
Before the other me can shoot, a tornado of fire separates the two of us. Immediately after, I hear the sound of Hisashi-sama moaning in agony, as the tornado from his hand disappears and shows burn marks on his arm.
"Foolish effort," the other me says. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small crystal sphere.
"THIS IS THE END!!!" the other me shouts, thrusting the crystal towards Hisashi-sama.
"NNOOOO!!!!" Mai-sama yells, jumping in between them, taking the blow.
In a matter of milliseconds, yellow rhime gets absorbed from her body into the crystal. Before any of us can do anything, the other me removes the crystal from her chest. She collapses and doesn't move.
"Like I said, playing the hero until the end."
"WAIT!!!" I yell.
The figure backflips towards the entrance of the building, takes the form of another policeman, and flees from the scene.
I look back towards Hisashi-sama and the children. Hisashi-sama, grimacing from pain, attempts to move Mai-sama. I rush over and take a closer look.
Her symptoms...show she is now in a coma.

Journeys in the Fairworld: The Gatekeeper
Lindsey Fluger was only slightly past eighteen. There was nothing particularly special about her, save that she happened to be the right person at the right time. When Lindsey is asked to join an expedition to another world she makes the mistake of saying yes, plunging herself into a sea of perilous adventure and dark intrigue. Journeys in the Fairworld is a fantasy anthology series set in The Fairworld, a magical realm existing in parallel with our own world which is governed by a group elfin beings known only as “The Good Folk”. These mysterious entities work in secret to keep the peace between the myriad of peoples and nations which dwell in The Fairworld. Complex relationships and bitter rivalries emerge against a backdrop of constrained resources and conflicting values to produce a world of high adventure and tangled mysteries. This novel is technically already completed, and I am currently in the final stages of proofing or editing. As such, there may be a few typos and errors here and there. The final version should be about 130,000 words long, which I will be releasing in stages as I continue editing. I'd love to hear your feedback and comments! If you want to read more stories from Journeys in the Fairworld, please checkout “Journeys in the Fairworld: The Brigand of Potham”, which is also available here on Royal Road Legends. https://www.royalroadl.com/fiction/19369/journeys-in-the-fairworld-the-brigand-of-potham

Wolf's Oath Book 1: Oath Sworn
In Aralt ‘Wolf” syr Tremayne’s world, skyships sail above tidal extremes, crystal swords are Tuned, and the soul-touched inspire both awe and fear. The latter doesn’t phase him, he carries a Tuned blade, and as for the ships…Aralt prefers to keep his feet on solid ground. Having finally laid to rest the ghosts of his past, he is unprepared when the grave gives one of them back. To his shame, it isn’t the one he wants. Lian Kynsei’s arrival upends Aralt’s life, but there is nothing he can do about it. Oath-bound to Lian, the last of a priestly clan, he is now defender of the scion of a faith he no longer shares. But the boy Aralt once knew is gone. In his place is a reckless, traumatized teen who can light the sky on fire. The more they get reacquainted, the less Aralt likes him—and the feeling is mutual. As revenge against a common enemy boils in his blood, Aralt struggles to do his oath-sworn duty and secure sanctuary for the heir-apparent to a mystical dynasty. But instead of safety, every step brings them closer to danger: sky pirates, cannibals, and a relentless soulless scourge unleashed by their enemy are all intent on killing Lian—or worse. Death, Aralt realizes, might be the greater mercy. ---------------------------------------------------------- What to Expect: Character-driven Plot Novel Pacing (which I accept isn't typical for serials) Elaborate Worldbuilding (you gotta pay attention) Soul-bonded Swords Sentient Wolves Longish Chapters What Not to Expect: Litrpg (sorry!) Harem (not sorry!) Magic System Short Chapters Dancing Bears (at least so far) Seriously, this is a second-world low fantasy/science-fantasy featuring a strong, but flawed male protagonist, a cheeky teenage boy that’s driving him crazy, a wee bit o’ Scots flavor, and a whole lot of culture clashing. I’m preparing to relaunch this story on Kindle once the second and third books are ready and I’d love some feedback as I move through those revisions. I'm serious about the feedback. All comments are welcome. I'll name a characters after you. And kill them, if you want. :) Oh, did I mention soulless assassins and cannibals? Yeah, Aralt’s day is not getting any better. cover image by brosedesignz
