《Meeting the Millers》|36| Reconstituded family

You know, I'm surprised that I'm not nervous in anyway at all. Usually when your meeting your boyfriends parents your on edge because you want them to like you, however the situation can end up being different when you know that your boyfriend doesn't actually like his parent.
I think I might have to make Melissa my personal stylist though: the clothes she got for me are amazing. I mean how the heck did she know that I love varsity jackets....
The Millers both have two different moods, there's Grace who is so excited and ready to see her dad..... then there's Carter who's not in the mood at all, he keeps clenching his jaw in annoyance. "Hey, it's one hour"
"Hm" Is all he replies with as he turns on the indicator, I sigh as I go back to using my phone.
I haven't actually been home today but Santiago's making me feel like I never left. He's one of those people who don't give a shit about if your busy or not, if he needs you then he'll call or text.
Dumbass
I turn off my phone after noticing that we've made it to the new Miller estate. All I'm saying is.... This house screams filthy rich, it puts mine and Carters house to shame. For starters it looks so new and modern, the grass looks fresher than any old regular grass, the front gates are gold and the house is white with black rooftops
"Woah" Grace whispers in awe as she looks out of the window
I scoff as I lean forward, "Yeah Woah"
"Obviously his new family mean that much to him" Carter mutters
"If it gets too much then you can always damage the property" I joke
He smiles a little before looking back, "Have you got your speaking cards?"
Grace shakes her head, "Why not?"
"I don't wanna use them" She whispers
He sighs, "Yeah ok"
"Hey" I say softly
Carter looks down at my hand as I rest it on his cheek, I lean forward before pressing a kiss onto his lips. "What was that for" He says amused
I smile as I wipe my lipgloss off of his mouth, "You'll be fine"
I then take off my seatbelt before opening the door, "Let's role Millers"
The two of them get out of the car before walking on either side of me towards the house, or should I say the mansion.
"We go in, we eat, we leave" Carter says
"Sounds good"
I press the doorbell before patiently waiting, it's funny because I don't even know what his dad looks like. I have this image that he's a really tall guy -taller than Carter- who may or not be intimidating. Thankfully we didn't have to wait for long, the door was opened by a women who looks not too young but not too old... and let's not start with the hair, it's amazing.
She looks at Carter with surprise and he narrows his eyes, "Sorry you just look so much like Jacob" She laughs a little
I can tell that Grace is confused, "I'm Martha.... Nice to meet you" Carter nods slowly
Martha then looks at me, "Carmen right?"
I nod as Grace takes my hand. I definitely think that Melissa should've given her a little heads up because now she's confused and is probably wondering who this lady is.

She crouches down with a smile, "That must make you Gracie"
Grace bites the inside of her cheek, "Um... so can we come in?" I fill the silence
Martha stands up, "Yeah of course" She moves out of the way and Carter walks in first, Grace and I follow closely behind
I take the time to look around the house, white definitely seems to be the theme. There's a few toys scattered on the living room floor, then theres a bookshelf full of kid books and a few educational ones. The kitchen floor is white marble and so is the island, then there's those circle lights that are already inserted into the ceiling.
A middle aged man closes the fridge before walking towards Carter, Grace and I with a little girl in his arms, she looks about three.
Martha sure wasn't lying when she said Carter looked like his dad, they have the same eyes, the same face structure..... It's scary. Jacob looks at us with surprise, "Carter"
My boyfriend does nothing but look back at his father, he then looks at his daughter. "Grace" He whispers as he puts the little brunette in his arms down
Grace doesn't say anything either, matter of fact she holds onto my hand tighter than before. I look down at her reassuringly, "It's ok" I say softly
Jacob gestures to the little girl, "This is your little sister Chloe"
Once again, she doesn't speak "She's obviously not gonna know who that is" Carter says annoyed
"Grace why don't you-
Carter takes her hand before he can even finish his sentence and I sigh.
He gives up with his son before looking at me,
"You must be Carmen"
I smile as he picks up Chloe once more
Jacob looks back at his daughter sadly, "I thought she would've been happy to see me"
"Oh she was beyond excited, I think she's just confused because of the environment and besides there's her selective mutism too"
He frowns, "She has selective mutism?"
I open my mouth before closing it and frowning, "I thought you knew?"
He shakes his head, "No I didn't..... what caused it?"
"Maybe this isn't a conversation you should be having with me" I say awkwardly
He sighs, "Yes of course... my apologies"
I shrug, "It's ok"
"You guys can sit at the table, food will be served soon"
I look past him, "Babe"
Carter gets up with Grace as I gesture for them to walk with me, there's eight plates set out on the table.... How many of us are there? I sit on one side of him whilst his sister sits on the other.
"How come he didn't know about Grace?" I ask
"I don't know maybe Melissa forgot to tell him"
I could just feel the bad energy from that sentence, it carried way too much attitude for my liking.
"Hey I know your mad but don't aim it towards me" I say seriously
He smiles sarcastically, "Now I regret giving you a bj" I mutter
Carter finally grins, "I don't"
I roll my eyes playfully as I sit back, I'm glad I got him to smile but that was only short lived because then Jacob sat down opposite us. "How do you guys like the house?" He asks his kids

"I don't know, how long until you plan on disappearing again?"
I mentally roll my eyes before plastering on a smile, "It's a lovely house"
Jacob smiles, "Thank you Carmen"
I nod a your welcome as he then looks at his daughter, "So how's school been Gracie?"
She sits there staring at him, "Clearly you don't how mutism works" Carter says annoyed
"I was just trying to start a conversation with her-
"You don't just ask open ended questions-
"How about we just leave Grace out of this" I suggest
Carters clenches his jaw but doesn't say anything and his father just sighs. Thankfully Martha stepped in so things didn't get too awkward, she sets down glasses of coke in front of six plates, then she gave Chloe and Grace some apple juice. "Thanks" I smile before nudging Carter
"Thanks" He mumbles
Martha nods a your welcome before sitting down. My phone buzzes and I frown as I look at the text.
Like I said, Santi doesn't care if your busy or not. I would've replied but then I heard a voice..... a very familiar one, "Dad did you still want your phone?-
The familiar voice trails off after noticing me and I frown as I look back at her, "Carmen?" She says surprised
"Stacey?"
Carter narrows his eyes, "You know each other"
A brunette comes into view, "Lola" I then scoff as my sister walks out of the kitchen
"Carmen?" She says confused
Martha looks between the three of us with a frown, "I'm sorry..... you guys know each other?"
"She's my sister" Lola and I say in unison
She then looks at Carter, "Wait but-
"Step brother, remember?" Stacey explains
Jacob looks between Lola and I , "I thought you said that none of your family know about you and St-
"I know pretty much all of Lola's friends" I interrupt
Carter doesn't know about them two so it's best if I don't let it slip out, I think Martha got the message though because eventually she nodded slowly.....However Jacob didn't, "Well I think it's lovely how both of my kids are dating a pair of siblings" He says amused
Stacey and Lola freeze whilst Carter and Grace just frown, "You guys are dating?"
"Um...Yeah" Lola finally says, he nods slowly
"Alright why don't we eat" Martha suggests
"Good idea" Jacob agrees
"I changed my mind, I wanna go" Carter mutters
"I mean it's your choice.... but wait a little longer"
Food was getting passed around by the servers and we all sat in silence as it happened, I think I'm still just a little shocked that I didn't realise Stacey was Carters step sister, but then again he didn't know either. "So Carmen when did you start dating my son?" Jacob asks curiously
I set Grace's plate down, "Well it's always been on and off but I'd say when I came back"
"From where?"
Usually I have no problem answering this question, but today I feel a little uncomfortable "Oh um.... I was living with my aunt for a year"
"Any reason why?" Jacob asks
"I was at a recovery programme"
"Were you over weight?-
"Dude" Stacey scoffs
"I swear to god-
"No....I was under" I reply to Jacobs question
"Ah, right" He nods
Thankfully Martha changed the subject, she's becoming a lifesaver today. "So Carter, your dad tells me you play football"
"Used to"
Jacob frowns, "What? Not that long ago you were still playing-
"Well as I just said before if you were listening, I've stopped"
"I'll have a word with the coach-
"I don't need you to do shit"
"But you love playing-
"I don't even know why I'm discussing football with you" Carter scoffs, Grace bites the inside of her cheek
"If this is about me not turning up to the game then son I'm sorry-
"Are you though? Because the only reason you came back was so that you could take the money that you left at our house, you don't give a fuck about your actual kids"
Lola and Stacey raise their eyebrows, "That's not true and you know it-
"Yes the fuck it is. But it's fine, Grace and I don't need you"
His father puts his glass down, "You say that like it's my fault your mother and I divorced in the first place"
"More coke anyone?" Martha tries
I frown, "But surely you shouldn't have let your issues with Melissa get in the way of your relationship with your kids"
The table goes quiet
"With all due respect, this is between us" Jacob finally says, trying not to sound annoyed
"I get that but you-
"Carmen please stay out of this"
"You invited me to this dinner so now I'm making a statement that you seem to be avoiding for some reason"
"Carmen" Lola says annoyed
"You shouldn't speak about situations you don't know about-
I snort. "No I know, Melissa made a mistake what five years ago and you still keep revisiting the past"
"That past ruined everything-
"Not really, you could've moved out and kept in touch but you didn't.... And for someone who hates Melissa, you sure love using her as an excuse for your shit parenting. I mean god, what do you actually know about your children?"
"The whole point of this dinner was so that I could reconnect with them again-
"See that's what I thought, but then I realised that we wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for Carter finding out the real reason you came back to see him.... Your doing this out of guilt"
Grace sits there with an unreadable expression, I think she's trying to make some sense of what's going on. Honestly, I don't even know where all this rudeness is coming from but I'm fully loaded. It's also ironic considering that I'm the one who was telling Carter to behave, but here I am having an attitude towards his dad. Am I sorry?...... No
Lola sits up, "She didn't mean that, she's sorry-
I scoff, "No I'm not"
My sister gives me a look but I ignore it
"Well, I think you have your own issues to be worried about don't you think Carmen?" Jacob questions
Carter frowns, "We wouldn't want you leaving my son again for another recovery programme would we"
My little sister scoffs and I smile sarcastically as I get up, "Melissa was a fucking g for cheating on you" I chuck my coke at him and everyone widens their eyes at me, including the waiters
Jacob Miller..... what an asshole

The Badger Dungeon
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Dungeons. Everyone's heard of them. Sprawling maze-like places where you can find special objects that can't be found anywhere else in the world, train to become a great warrior or wizard, and slay dozens of monsters. Drops! Loot! Glory! What more could you want? Dungeons are places of danger and adventure, full of thrills and maybe even romance, where people enter as your normal and everyday person but leave as a hero. Even a child knows what a dungeon is! A dungeon is controlled and ruled over by its Dungeon Core, a mana crystal that's gained sentience, and with it a mind just as twisted as the home that it makes for itself. Dungeon Cores all have very simple wants and needs: to expand and to devour, and to that end, they'll do absolutely everything and anything within their power. Everyone knows that. Sometimes, though? Sometimes the Dungeon Core doesn't know that. Sometimes they wake up all alone, confused and with no clue what they should do, and find themselves quickly becoming the home to a family of badgers and other creatures. The Dungeon Core can be left struggling to figure out their role in the world and how exactly they're supposed to achieve it. They're really doing their best, and you shouldn't judge them for it! The badger thing was a complete mistake but there's just no way they can turn back and fix it so they're just trying to make do, okay?! What would you do in their situation?!
