Billy slowly shut the door behind him and leaned on it. My eyes popped open wide as we made eye contact. His eyes trailed over to his mother before he grimaced.
"Can we talk?" Michelle hopefully asked him.
"I have to take care of my girlfriend first." He replied gruffly as he stomped towards us. Switching all of the grocery bags to one hand he reached out with the other to scoop me up before walking to the kitchen.
"Billy.." I mumbled trying to get down and walk on my own. He ignored my struggles and gently placed me on a kitchen stool.
Michelle awkwardly trailed in behind us looking nervous. I watched her lean against the fridge as she watched Billy place a glass of water and aspirin in front of me.
"Billy will you just talk to her?" I whispered while picking up the glass.
He rolled his eyes but you could visibly see his resistance begin to fade. I got up and walked down the hall to try and give them space but stopped when I heard her fill the seat I was just sitting in. I heard Billy let out a frustrated sigh as I crept back towards the kitchen to eavesdrop from the hallway.
I then heard Michelle mumbling something as I came to a stop. I was perfectly covered by the wall but close enough to hear words now.
"-it was selfish of me I know but I never ever planned on leaving you forever. But I didn't know how to get you back I-"
"Mom." Billy responded in a terse voice. "I understand."
She clasped her hands together gratefully, like she thought she was making progress with him. Before my brain could process what she had leapt up to do, she was crushing Billy in a hug. Her small arms hanging over his neck and pulling him in like he was still a small child. He was extremely stiff and shocked for a moment before he too relaxed into it and wrapped his arms back around her. He turned his head to fully lean into her. Michelle quickly responded to that by letting go with one hand to cradle his face and pat him like you would when soothing a baby.

It was silent for a while as they rocked back and forth so I felt like I could leave them to it. On my way back down the hall I heard Michelle say "Oh and congratulations by the way!".
I could practically hear the confusion from here as he responded in a voice too low for me to interpret. When she answered there was a loud and immediate crash followed by pounding footsteps of him leaving the kitchen. I sprinted into the bedroom and quickly laid down in my best sleeping position to act like I wasn't listening in. The door was already half open but as Billy tore down the hall he didn't hesitate to slam it all the way open.
I looked up at him shocked and he stared back at me with the same expression.
"We're having a baby?" He questioned me with a terrified look on his face.

The Draw Of The Unknown
Mia Campbell is your average introverted loner. Not exactly satisfied with her life doing pretty much nothing of import, she's also not that willing to break out and make a change. Until, without any preamble or warning, she is bestowed with a cryptic system that both grants her magical powers, and also operates on the logic of a card game. Things begin to escalate from there. **This project is a bit of an experiment! For any given chapter, Mia's 'decklist' will be built by the community, over on our Discord server. If you find this amusing, and want to participate in the discussion, as well as find the complete list of cards, you will be able to find the link to the Discord server at the end of each chapter. Discussion in the comments is also encouraged and included as well. Each chapter and/or scenario will be intentional, but the cards used will be chosen by you guys. And the draws made will be done via actual drawing of cards during the writing process, for bonus author street cred.**
