Billy led me inside and flicked on a light switch before removing his hand. I was greeted with a small but cozy apartment space. The floor plan was completely open and a small countertop separated the kitchen from the living room. The walls were painted white and the floors were made out of light wood paneling. I gasped as I looked around. Stepping further inside I peeked down a hallway to reveal a simple room and bathroom. Even a balcony at the very end.
"Ours?" I questioned him.
He nodded and tossed a house key at me. I caught it and gave the place another look. A smile broke out across my face as I squealed. I ran at Billy and jumped on him. He caught me as we laughed.
"Holy shit! Holy! Shit! You're joking right?" I asked breathlessly.
"I'm not joking."
"We have to start unpacking right this instant."

I watched Billy drag in more boxes as I hung clothes up in the closet. He had left his own clothes box for me to unpack and in exchange he offered to do the heavy lifting later when we acquired some furniture. I placed my shirts on one side of the closet and Billy's on the other. But as I was hanging up the last of Billy's stuff I had decided to sneakily put my favorite shirt of his on my side. In the middle of doing so Billy had rounded the corner causing me to jump.
"Yes?" I said startled.
"I was thinking we should probably buy like a bed before the stores close and everyth- why do you look so guilty?"
My mouth opened and closed as I thought of an excuse. He chuckled as he looked at his shirt that was clearly not on the correct side.

"I don't know why you did all that. It's not like I'll steal your clothes and we already know you'll steal mine. Should've just thrown them in there." He said with a shrug.
"Okay so furniture shopping." I said clasping my hands together while ignoring his earlier statement.

"Cut it out." I told Billy as his hand slipped lower down my body than was publicly appropriate.
He playfully rolled his eyes before grabbing my hand as we looked at furniture.
I pointed towards a bed and Billy frowned at it. It was the third he already decided he didn't like just from looking at it. I was trying not to get frustrated with him so I walked over to a bigger bed and pointed at it. Billy followed but instead of frowning at it. He walked up and began shaking the headboard. I looked at him like he was crazy as he turned to the bed next to it and did the same thing. I stared at him like he had lost his marbles before he turned around and said "making sure it doesn't make a whole lot of noise".
I opened my mouth to argue with him about how stupid that was before I got what he was referring to and blushed a bright shade of red.
"Oh my god." I said walking away from him.
"Baby I was kidding! No I wasn't. Baby come he-" He said laughing before he was cut off.
"Billy? No way!" A girl said laughing as she approached him. She had obviously bleached platinum blonde hair. She smacked her gum and practically slinked over to him.
Billy's eyes widened as he looked from her to me.
"Chloe.." He said awkwardly.
"I thought you had moved because of the incident? I've missed you." She said reaching up to touch his face. He awkwardly stood there and let it happen. A wave of jealousy passed through me as I glared at him.

"Chloe." He said backing away from her touch. "This is my wife, Margaret."
Her eyes opened in shock before squinting at me in disgust.
I was shocked at his word choice too but quickly grabbed his hand and leaned into him lovingly. I sent her a smile as I reached up on my tippy toes to give his neck a quick kiss.
"Thats.. lovely. Congratulations." Chloe replied flatly.
"Oh thanks." Billy said with a smile as he looked down at me, clearly unaware of the tenseness of the room.
"Well I hope it won't be awkward then. Me and Billy use to be the best of friends before you came along." She said snarkily. "We also has sex numerous times but I won't make it uncomfortable unless you do. See you both around." Chloe said before quickly walking off.
My jaw dropped at her audacity before I threw Billy's arm off from around my shoulder. I scoffed and distracted myself with more furniture shopping.
"Margaret." Billy said as he followed me. "Are you mad? Baby that was forever ago before I even knew you!"
I stopped walking and his large frame bumped into me. I turned around and used my sweaters sleeve to wipe where Chloe had touched his face.
"Ow- Margo." He said grabbing my wrists. "Can we talk about this?"
I scoffed at him, still hurt with her words. "I just- I want to go back to the apartment."
He nodded at me and quickly picked out a bed so we could hastily leave.

"Fuck!" I yelled frustrated. The whiplash of emotions I'd had throughout the day was increasingly making me upset. I was homesick and uncomfortable in my new surroundings. The only thing I was comfortable with here was Billy, but I was mad at him.
I threw the screwdriver down angrily because I couldn't get the simple night stand we had bought to stay together.
Billy walked out of the bedroom where he was piecing the bed together to find me pouting on the living room floor. I looked out of the now dark window to avoid eye contact. He sat down on the floor and pulled me into his body. We still hadn't discussed Chloe since my outburst at the store.
"Do you wanna talk now?" He asked.
"I don't like her."
"I know babydoll. You don't have to see her again."
"She touched your face." I whined like a child.
"I can't help what she does Margo." The frustration building up becoming increasingly clear in his voice.
"You could've moved out of her reach."
Billy sat back and rubbed a hand over his face.
"How was I to know she was gonna reach out to touch me? I haven't seen her in years anyways."
"Well clearly you were the best of friends." I said cringing as I remembered her words.
"Margaret! I love you but cut it out I can't control or change what she did!" he finally yelled.

Voidsong (A NaNoWriMo 2018 winner)
Synopsys: The Empire thought humanity died, and forgot all about it. The Empire is mistaken. A Note From the Author: This story was written as a National Novel Writing Month 2018 entrant. As such, its entire 50,000+ word length was written between November 1, 2018 and November 31, 2018. Overall, I would consider this no more than a polished draft. In that vein, the chapters have no names, only numbers. Special thanks to Chronus on youtube for answering my questions on NATO radio procedures! My Apologies to the Finnish Language, which I have abused in (probably) unforgivable ways to create Twisted Empire names. If anyone is interested, break the names up by commas and toss them into your favorite translation program (I used Google Translate, and tried to avoid umlauts and other accents) for some semi bilingual boni. If I got something wrong (and I know I did… somewhere…) let me know over on reddit and I will see what I can do to fix the mistake. Lyrics, where included, are cited in footnotes.
