《Emerald》40

Soon, the snow covered the ground again.
The four of us walked around outside, enjoying the cold wintery weather.
As we walked, we trailed professor Slughorn.
We walked through hogsmeade, and professor entered The Three Broomsticks.
"Anyone fancy a butterbeer?" Hermione asked us.
We entered the building, and took our seats at a table.
I sipped my foamy drink, as Ron complained about his sister.
Ginny was in the corner of the building, on a date.
They talked amongst themselves, as Draco walked in the door.
He locked eyes with me, before he quickly walked through a door and upstairs.
What was he doing?
"Your eyes give you away." Hermione spoke sternly to me.
"Looking at someone doesn't mean anything." I rolled my eyes at her.
Professor Slughorn approached us, with a smile on his face, and a drink in his hand.
"Harry, it's good to see you!" He expressed.
"You too, sir." Harry replied, as he sipped his drink.
Professor Slughorn stumbled a bit, spilling most of his drink on Hermione and I's laps.
"I'm sorry, Ms Granger and Ms Stewart." Professor giggled.
"It's alright." I quietly said, as we attempted to wipe our clothes up.
"Oh.... I do have my Christmas party, before the holidays. Would you come Harry? You two Ms Granger, and Ms Stewart?" Slughorn asked as he pointed at us.
"Yes, thank you." Harry shook his hand.
Hermione and I, replied with simple nods.
Professor Slughorn's eyes drifted over to Ron, who was watching the conversation unravel.
"Gooooood to see you Wallenbee!" Professor spoke to Ron, before stumbling away.
Hermione and I let out a chuckle.
"Come on," I stated as, I finished my drink, "Lets get out of here."
We walked quickly through the snowy paths, our arms around each other's shoulders.

As we got closer to the castle, we stopped dead in our tracks.
"I don't know what happened!" A first year girl screamed in fear.
She was on her knees.
There was a necklace laying on the ground in front of her.
Her friend laid a few yards in front of her, Katie Bell.
Her body trembled, then shot up it the air.
Katie's arms stretched out straight from her body.
Her jaw opened wide, as an ear piercing screech left her mouth.
Katie's body flopped to the ground.
"Everyone, stay where you are!" Hagrid yelled as he ran over.
He picked Katie off of the ground.
Harry walked over to the necklace.
"Don't touch anything, except the wrappings!" Hagrid yelled at Harry.
Harry carefully grabbed the cloth under the necklace, picking it up.
"She's been hexed, hasn't she?" I asked Hagrid.
"All of you, follow me." Hagrid demanded, as he ignored my question.
We followed Hagrid into the castle.
He brought Katie to the hospital wing, and lead the rest of us to professor McGonagall's office.
Snape was in there as well.
Katie's friend spoke to McGonagall first.
She didn't know how Katie got the necklace, or why.
She just knew that Katie told her that she was supposed to deliver it to Dumbledore.
When she finished speaking, she was dismissed.
Professor McGonagall sighed as she looked at the four of us, that stood before her.
"Why is it when something happens, it is always you four?" Professor McGonagall asked us.
We all looked at each other.
"Believe me Professor, I've been asking myself the same question for six years." Ron spoke.
"The necklace was cursed, wasn't it?" I asked McGonagall.
"I'm afraid so."
"Malfoy did it!" Harry blurted out.

"Evidence?" Snape slowly asked Harry.
"Well... I don't have any.... I just know..." Harry trailed off.
I glared at Harry.
Of course, the first name for him to throw out there was Draco's.
"Bold accusation, for someone who has nothing to back it up." Snape put annunciation on the last word.
"You four are dismissed." Professor waved us away.
We quickly walked out of her office, the door slammed shut behind up.
"Idiot." I smacked Harry in the back of the head.
"Ouch! Well it's true!" Harry rubbed the back of his head.
"How?" Hermione asked, as we continued to walk.
"I can just feel it." Harry replied.
"Why do you guys always have something against Malfoy?" I shook my head at them.
"Why do you always defend him?" Ron asked, "I think someone has a crush on-"
I quickly smacked Ron in the back of the head.
"You are all fueled by hatred! Ever since you've met him on our first year!"
"It'll change once he gives us a reason to think otherwise." Harry spoke in a serious tone.
I rolled my eyes at them, as we walked through the Gryffindor common room.
I walked away from them, and into Hermione and I's room.
"Assholes." I said to myself.
I flopped down on my bed.
Hermione softly creaked the door open, slipping into our room.
She shut the door behind her, before sitting down next to me.
"What?" I asked her, a soft smile grew on her face.
"I didn't say anything." Hermione looked at me.
I narrowed my eyes at her.
"I'm surprised you didn't, you've always got something to say about Malfoy."
The smile on her face grew a little bit.
"I guess I have had a small change of heart." Hermione giggled a little.
Hermione.... change of heart.... about Malfoy?
Huh?
"What are you talking about?" I asked her, as I chuckled nervously.
"You talk in your sleep, you know that?" Hermione laughed.
"Yeah, sometimes." I laughed.
"You say his name a lot. You hid it pretty good for a while, I'll admit it. I see a different Draco than you do, I guess." Hermione rubbed my back.
"So you're not mad?" I asked her.
"Well, I don't like it.... but what can I do." Hermione laughed.
I'm surprised that she wasn't angry.
I'm surprised it took her this long to catch on.
"I wish you could see him through my eyes." I gave Hermione a weak smile.
"There's a way I can, but you've gotta trust me." Hermione stood up.
"I trust you." I stood up as well.
"Take my hand." Hermione extended her arm to me, her palm faced the air.
I grabbed her hand with mine, and we instantly flashed out of the room.

Tower of Somnus
When humanity first encountered alien life, we were judged and found wanting. The Galactic Consensus interviewed our leaders and subjected us to a battery of psychological tests to determine our progress as a society. They found us to be selfish, wasteful, impulsive, and boorish neighbors. Earth was blockaded and our collective encounter with our extrasolar neighbors rapidly faded from memory. All they left behind was a hypercomm relay and a handful of subscriptions to a massively multiplayer game that participants played in their sleep. The Consensus said that it would let us interact with our neighbors in a controlled setting. That it would teach us to be better members of the galactic community. The megacorporations that controlled Earth ignored the game until they learned that the powers earned from clearing dungeons were just as real when day broke. Magic, supernatural abilities and rumors exploded from nothing and a subscription to The Tower of Somnus became a status symbol. Katherine ‘Kat’ Debs doesn’t have much, but it could be worse. Born in an arcology, she was assigned a job in the megacorporation that raised her almost as soon as she could work. Despite the stability of her corporate life, she wanted something more. A chance to claw her way up the rigid social and financial ladder to make something of herself. A chance that wouldn’t come naturally to someone as familiar with dark alleyways and the glint of steel as she was with office work and corporate niceties.Book One is up on Kindle Unlimited as of 7/6/22 - https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B0B2X3L8H5
