《The Come Up》Chapter 46 - California II

Trisha and I are escorted to a large grey building with jet black windows labeled High Top Studios in the middle of Los Angeles. As soon as we get out of the car, a stream of paparazzi's flock towards us, losing interest in the front entrance where they seemed to have originally been stationed.

"Chanel!" They begin to call.

My shades, though protecting my eyes from the bright sun, were also helping me shield my shocked expression. When would I get used to this invasion in public?

I lift my red MK bag over my shoulder and wave casually as Trisha steps in front of me to block off a paparazzi who is getting too close.

"Some space." she says politely.

He staggers back but continues to take pictures.

"What are you doing here today, Chanel?" They shout.

"Chanel over here!" Calls another.

I turn my head slightly and smile. He snaps.

"Love the outfit, Chanel." Another calls.

I am styled simple but still chic and in my opinion too expensive.

A white low cut shirt, Calvin Klein boyfriend jeans, Yeezy sneakers, my red MK bag and Dior shades. The entire outfit totaling up to $900. Back in the hood, you could have gotten the knock off for all of these and only had it come up to like $20. Trisha dressed me and did my make up and the paparazzi were just soaking it all up.

"Trisha!" One of the paparazzi call. It throws me off and Trisha turns her head to look.

She smiles and literally stops walking.

I can't help it but I start dying of laughter.

"Yo, I can't stand you." I say as I pass her and continue the rest of the walk into the studios.

She laughs as she stays back.

"Girl! You makin me famous with-"

She poses again and they snap.

"You making me famous with you!" She finishes.

I hear her running to catch up. The paparazzi are laughing too. I can't be mad at her because this is exactly what I wanted. I wanted all of my friends to come up with me. It gets lonely. I remember being in my new apartment by myself before the accident. The apartment is nice but with just me in it, it's just too quiet. I can't wait to move mom in. A part of me wishes Trish could move in too.

The High Top studios is very beautiful. It looks like a fancy warehouse. The walls on the insides are grey too and it is spacey and dimly lit but so nicely decorated. A blonde lady with glasses take us up to the 7th floor in the elevator and walks us quickly to a large and open room. She walks like she is late for something but I realize that she is just busy, because when she drops us off, she notifies someone and then leaves just as quickly as she came.

A long white background is to the side of the room, cameras as well as large beams of light point to the white background and the photographer is on the ground angling the camera towards someone we cannot see due to the corner of the wall. Trisha and I glance at each other confused.

"Hello, come in." A white man with black hair and a fitted t-shirt motions to us.

As we fully enter the large room and walk to the man, we can see that the camera and lights are aimed at Mila and she is dressed in a pink silk shirt exposing her bust line, white heels and white short shorts. There is purple lipstick on her plump lips and her curls blow with the fan as she takes the directions from the photographer. She doesn't even look at us or stop to greet us.

The man who called us in, introduces himself. He sticks his hands out, redirecting my focus.

"Hello, i'm Canton, Mila's manager. Nice to meet you Chanel." He greets professionally and with a smile. He looks about 30 years old and reminds me of Clark Kent.

I shake his rough hands.

"Hi, nice to meet you as well. This is my friend, Trisha." I introduce.

He smiles at Trish but Trish barely smiles back.

"She will just be a minute." Canton says, directing his eyes back to his client.

"Okay, that's fine." I say stepping to the side.

"Is it?" Trisha whispers to me.

I give her a warning look.

"What?" Trisha asks confused. "Nobody told us we were comin to homegirl's photoshoot. I don't know how I feel about this. Seems a little showoffy."

"Maybe she's just busy. It's no big deal." I shrug. I pull my long straightened hair to one side and make sure it isn't frizzing up.

"Chin up and shoulders back a little more, Mila." He snaps. "Perfect."

He snaps more. "Hands in your curls, look right at the camera." He snaps. "Beautiful."

Minutes upon minutes pass and Mila does at least 15 more poses.

"A smile." He directs.

Mila purses her lips and then smiles daringly. He snaps.

"Oh come on." Trisha rolls her eyes in the corner.

"Trish, I need you to chill. Don't mess up my business." I warn quietly.

"Alright, take five." The photographer gets up from the ground and walks to look at the shots on a different camera. Mila takes a sip of her water and then begins walking over to us. Her hips sway and her small body seems light and graceful. I understand why her fan base is so large, and I understand why it grew so fast.

Trisha stands close by me and as she approaches us she develops a large smile.

"Hi." Her voice is easy and playful. "Wow, so nice to finally meet you." She opens her arms and I give her a light hug.

"You as well." I say not matching her excitement but at least trying to.

"This is my best friend, Trisha." I say. Trisha smiles and shakes her hand.

"I see you have met my life saver Canton." She motions to her manager sitting in the chair, staring at a screen of his own with all her pictures.

I nod.

"So lets sit down and talk. I don't have long but we can make it work." She laughs something squeaky and Trisha rolls her eyes at her fifty times when she turns her back. I try not to grin as my best friend does exactly what I am doing in my head.

She takes us to what looks like a conference room like the one Mac has at the studio.

She takes her seat and I sit down across from her, then Trisha sits next to me. There is a great amount of sunlight in the room and it only makes Mila's curls shine off the walls. She glows like a type of angel and for a second I am wondering if I just dislike her cause she's pretty.

"We didn't know we were meeting you at your photoshoot, we thought it was, you know, a more private or one on one setting." Trisha speaks before me.

She begins speaking to both of us.

"I know. Originally this wasn't the plan but today was the last day my photographer had before he went back to London. I don't know if you've heard of him, Demi Vatino. He's really known for his work and I couldn't pass up the opportunity." She says seeming apologetic but not sincere enough.

From where I am, I can see her eyes are green. It's hard not to sink into them, it's hard not to completely hate her. I hope she can't read me through my glasses.

"Okay, it's no problem." I answer before Trish can.

"So you heard 'Take my love', and you're completely down to get on the track?" I ask getting back to the topic.

"Yes!" She squeaks. "I love the song, I love the concept. The beat is really fierce and alluring. Also, I am a huge fan of yours so just the chance to be working with you is pretty cool. Kind of fan girling over here. You're just as beautiful in person."

I nod but find it hard to smile.

"I appreciate that, thank you." I say.

"Have you recorded anything yet? We sent you the backing track." I push up my glasses.

"I haven't had the time to record, which is another reason I wanted to meet you today because if it wasn't today, I literally don't know when I would have the time for it." She laughs again.

"Yea, you seem pretty busy." I comment.

"Yea photoshoots, performances, appearances, Cover Girl wants me to do a shoot tomorrow and I have the red carpet appearance for Cannibal right after that." She talks like she is already exhausted.

"Cannibal?" I question lost.

"Oh, yea. The movie I'm starring in. It's directed by Martin Scorsese. He directed like..." She takes a moment to think. "Shutter Island, Shark Tale."

"Ahh okay."

She giggles and nods. "Busy busy. So what are you up to today? Exploring Cali?"

"Yea. I have a meet and greet a little later." I say.

"Ohh woooow. Where at?" She asks a little too excited.

"Little Tokyo Mall." I answer.

"Sheesh. I remember when I was doing mall meet and greets." She touches my hand and smiles.

"Wha-" Trisha begins but I kick her under the table. She lets out her anger in a deep release of air.

"Not too long ago right? Cause you like, just came on." Trisha manages not to miss a beat.

Mila freezes but shakes it off, her face still looking confused.

"Two years ago, but yea." She smiles too bright at Trish and I can feel the tension building too fast.

"I could never do them now." She glances at me. I envision myself punching her in the nose at that moment.

"Why's that?" I ask interested.

"The fans would literally hit over the body guards to get to me." She shakes her head.

"Hey, maybe after your meet and greet we can hang out tonight. I'll show you what Cali's really like!" Her shoulders go up.

"We have pla-" Trisha begins.

"I will definitely let you know." I say overshadowing her.

"Great! I gotta get back on set. It was so nice meeting you guys." She puts her hand to her heart and we get up to leave. As Trisha opens the door, Mila walks out of it before Trish can and doesn't say 'Thank You'.

I look away, trying not to fuel Trish's anger.

"Ooo, wait! Almost forgot." Mila says turning back.

She pulls out her phone.

"Selfie!" She squeaks.

She holds the camera out and positions it so we both have equal camera space.

I smile as big as she does and she posts it to snapchat.

"Love it! Okay, I'll see you guys tonight, hopefully!" She waves and disappears as the photographer calls her back to set.

"Have Canton give you my number!" She yells from inside.

I look at Trisha's face and already know that if I head back inside to Canton, as soon as I turn my back she will be at Mila's throat. I wrap my arm around Trisha's arm and head to the elevator back downstairs.

"Calm down." I say smiling slightly.

I kiss her on the cheek.

The elevator door closes.

"That bitch." She mumbles.

I rub her hand softly. "I know sweetie, I know."
