《The Collections (Short Stories)》The Unlucky III

Nora knew who she needed to see, just not where to find her. She approached every home and knocked, waiting for the brunette to appear into her view.

An elongated amount of time passed before Nora peacefully advanced toward a decrepit looking home. She stopped inches from the large wooden door, anticipating who might be on the other side.

After three, low-pitched knocks, she could hear shuffling on the other end of the door. Soon, it was open. Progressing out from the murkiness of the home was the girl Nora had tripped earlier. Her hazel eyes sparkled, surprised to see Nora at her doorstep.

"Nora? Hi," she said, leaning in the doorway.

"I need your help," Nora replied, not wasting any time.

The girl looked bewildered for a moment, but willingly accepted. She nodded for Nora to perdure with her request.

"Great!" Nora said, excited for once in a long time. The girl stared intently at her.

She seemed to be around Nora's age, which was sixteen. She was gratified that Nora appeared to be showing emotion again. Everyone knew that after the pass of her sister, Nora had not been the same.

"So, what do you need my help with?" the girl asked.

Nora fidgeted with her chewed fingernails. There were signs of previous bleeding and dirt lodged far under her nail. She made eye contact with the lighthearted girl.

"I need to know when I die."

The girl's facial expression shifted to shock. It was obvious someone had told her about the horrible news, but it was not what the girl was expecting when Nora pleaded for her help.

"I can't," she replied, shaking her head in defeat.

"Why not?"

"Some people have feelings, Nora."

The girl was stunned at her own eruption of words. She did not mean to sound so impertinent. She hesitantly rephrased.

"I care about you, that's all."

There were those words again, Nora thought. Those words that she imagined could not be true in any way. They were lies told straight to her face out of pity. She stared at the girl, trying to find the flaw laced in her lie within her expression, but she couldn't.

"Why?"

The brunette pinched the bridge of her nose as she sighed.

"Look, Nora, I always have, and I always will. I don't want to lose you even if I never had you. Please take this more seriously. For fuck sakes your life is going to end! You shouldn't want to die, you should want to live, Nora. You should be crying, upset, whatever! You should want to at least live the rest of your time here with people who love you, and experience things you love one last time."

The girl's rant came to an end. Nora paid attention the whole time; showed interest the whole time. She analyzed each and every word. She felt something again. The numbness in her body was finally being sucked out into the air, seeking to be swept away. With the lack of words from Nora, the girl took it into her own hands to speak again.

"Look, I'm really sorry. About everything, I am," the girl stopped talking for a moment. Processing everything that was happening in front of her.

"Do you even remember me, Nora?"

Nora looked up at her, staring into those hazel eyes that she found to be quite beautiful, actually. Noticing all the different shades of brown and green, blended together to be quite gorgeous to look at. They reminded her of the nature around them.

"No," she breathed.
