《The Collections (Short Stories)》The Unlucky II

That was weird, Nora thought to herself. She moved past the thought with the girl and lingered home. Her father was anxiously awaiting for her arrival.

"Hey, Nora," he said, pulling her into a firm hug.

"You don't give hugs?" Nora questioned at the strange action.

"I'm just happy to see you, Princess."

"Right."

Nora lightly pushed the man away from her, creating the distance she needed to breath. Her father cleared his throat before speaking to her again, this time his voice quivering.

"So, have you had a chance to look at the Unlucky?"

"No, Father. I don't care."

When the words floated off her lips escaping for freedom, her father's eyes began to water.

"Why are you crying? You haven't cried in a year," Nora asked instinctively.

She did not care at the moment that her father was in front of her with tears filling his eyes. Nor did she know when she would care again, if she ever would. She felt asking was the right thing to do.

Her father locked eyes with her. She was now staring into glossy, honey-brown eyes. She searched for an explanation on his actions, but his face was unreadable.

"It's you, Nora," he said, after a moment of silence between the two.

She took a step away from her father. She did not care about anyone or anything anymore. To hear that the Unlucky was her, made her pleased. Instead of ending her life herself, she could go away without anyone stopping her. Begging her not to. That made Nora happy, almost. Glad that something actually went her way for once in her life. She knew she didn't have to deal with the numbness anymore.

"When," Nora finally asked, not even noticing or caring about her father's broken heart. Not even concerned that she was crushing it even more. Shattering it into a million pieces. Her father had two children and no wife. Soon, he would be left with nothing.

He collapsed to his knees. Puffy red eyes stared into Nora's lost soul. He cried harder, letting every tear that fell be a piece of his fractured heart. Nora, being the disinterested person she had become, took another step away from the man.

"I will ask someone else."

She began to walk away, leaving the man to drown and choke in his own salt. It wasn't long before she heard him whimper out almost incomprehensible words.

"Promise me you will always love me?"
