Testing Fate
Part 38 – Final
*Selena’s POV*
“Selena?” Justin asked going over to me. “Are you okay?” he asked as the doctor left to give us some alone time.
“Yeah, I’m not that upset. I mean we have the twins. We’ve had three kids. I think that more than enough,” I said honestly looking up at him with a faint smile.
“I agree,” he said placing his lips on mine. “Get some sleep. I’m sure you’re super tired. I’ll go puck up the outfits and things we need from the house, then we can visit the twins together when you wake up.”
“Okay, I love you,” I said feeling my eyes droop as my head hit the plush pillow.
-
“I’m not sure Selena wants you here,” I heard Justin whisper to someone else.
“I don’t care. I’m her mother whether she likes it or not. I am the grandmother, I deserve to see these kids,” my mom said making me groan, and alerting the room that I was now awake.
“Get out,” was all I said as I sat up in the bed crossing my arms over my chest.
“Selena it’s been months since I talked to my daughter. I miss you and I want to make amends,” my mother said taking a step closer.
“I really don’t want to talk to you. I just had two kids, I’m too warn out for more drama,” I said rolling my eyes at her attempt to apologize. “I have been doing perfectly fine without you since what happened I think I can continue you the rest of my life that way.”
She nodded and lowered her head before leaving peacefully.
“So time to see the twins?” I asked quickly changing the subject.

“Not so fast,” Justin said. “Don’t you think you were a little harsh on your mother?”
“No, you were there. You say how they basically said they were happy for us and didn’t support us. I don’t want someone who doesn’t support my happiness in my life. I don’t need that negativity, especially around Ava and Eva.”
“You could have let her down a little easier. You are going to have to make amends sooner or later for Gracie’s sake. You still want to see your sister right?” He asked as we walked up to the neonatal part of the hospital.
“There are ways I can see Gracie without having to mess with my parents,” I said as we both washed our hands before being able to see Ava and Eva.
“They’re so tiny,” I said running my thumb along Ava’s cheek which Justin held Eva.
“They look so much alike too,” Justin noted, gently rocking a sleeping Eva.
“We make a pretty cute family huh?” I asked smiling over at him.
“Yeah we do,” he agreed kissing me with a smile.
*Justin’s POV*
A few weeks later we were able to take the girls home from the hospital and everything has pretty much been running smoothly.
Selena and I got married they day she got out of the hospital, as promised and we are not planning a really small wedding for just friends and family for my sake.
“Justin can you get them? I’m so tired,” Selena whimpered as they girls’ cries through the baby monitor got louder and louder at 2 in the morning.
“Sure love. Go back to sleep,” I said kissing her head and sliding out of bed to shuffle my feet to the girls’ room.

“Daddy’s here,” I said with a yawn as I went to take the premade milk bottles out of the mini-fridge we had put in the room for nights like this and put them in the microwave we also had put in the room.
Once both bottles were done set them down on the side table by the rocking chair and picked up the girls, one in each arm. I sat in the chair situating myself so that I could hold their bottles for them and also hold them.
“I know that you girls are really little and let’s be honest you will never remember this but don’t ever forget that I love you, both of you. You girls are my world. I will do whatever I have to in order to provide for you and keep you safe,” I said rocking myself lightly as I watched both of them suck away on their bottle without a care in the world.
While I waited for them to finish I decided I would sing to them softly, just making up the words as my mind wondered from place to place so late at night.
“Okay time for bed,” I said putting the bottles to the side as they finished.
I burped them both and changed their diaper before laying them back in bed with a kiss on their head.
“Daddy loves you,” I said turning off the light and leaving the door cracked before sliding back into my room.
“You’re a really good dad,” Selena said as I climbed under the covers.
“What are you talking about?” I asked as I wrapped my arm around her stomach lightly and pulling her into my chest.
“I heard you talking and singing to them. It was really sweet and I just wanted you to know that you are a great father. Possibly even the best,” she joked.
“I love you too. No matter what happens in the future, I love you. Always have, always will.”
“I love you more,” she said kissing me.
Over the last few years, Selena and I had our highs and lows. At some points I honestly never thought we would get back together, but I’m glad we did, because I can’t imagine my life without her. The whole time we were just really Testing Fate. And it was so worth it.

The Girl from the Mountain
Alexandra Bedford is a weapon, a young woman with telekinetic powers capable of leveling entire cities, born to fight in the desolate remains of post-apocalyptic North America. There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
