《The Retribution of the Ice Cold Maiden》39 - Are you... Nurse Ursula?

"N-No... You can't...!!" Selena almost screamed out at the mention of her Grandfather.
"Oh? Why not, Lady Selena? Is there something wrong?" Wilfred Wyatt pressured Selena by keeping on asking her.
"I-I... h-he is taking... a bath a-and he doesn't want to be disturbed." Selena stuttered as she avoided their gazes.
The maids were dumbfounded. 'What the hell are you looking so guilty for? Aren't you telling the truth? What is even happening? Is Lady Selena having a stroke or am I?'
On the other hand, Wilfred and his grandnephew, Zane were delighted by Selena's reactions. Captain Hamett who tagged along with Wilfred to meet Finn Venbella narrowed his eyes in suspicion.
"Granduncle, why are you questioning my cousin like a criminal?" Zane stood by Selena's side and "comforted" her by "reprimanding" Granduncle.
"T-Thank you..." Selena also drove her acting into 5th gear by blinking at Zane and showing how reassured she was after Zane took her side.
"Besides..." Zane continued with a smile, "...I believe this is the first time Cousin Selena has come to meet with Grandfather ever since that unpleasantness many years ago. I believe they have a lot to talk about. We should leave and visit some other time. Is that fine with you, Lady Selena?"
"I... Yes...!! Of Course...!!" Selena suddenly looked relieved at the suggestion.
"Very Well... if Zane says so, who am I to argue?" Wilfred acted like he was compliant and turned around to leave. However, he grinned secretly when he saw Captain Hamett step forward.
"Lady Selena, can I ask you a few questions...?" he said as he stood in front of Selena. For a middle-aged man, he was well built and had a handlebar mustache. It should have made him look fancy but his strict demeanor and stern face made him look threatening instead.
"Eh? W-Who are you to ask me questions?" Selena seemed frightened and defensive due to his straightforward approach.
"Cousin Selena... He is Captain Hamett." Zane explained. "He is an old friend of Grandfather and a respected Captain in the Royal Army. Please be mindful when speaking to him."
"T-That... I... Okay." Selena seemed to panic after hearing about Captain Hamett.
"Lady Selena, when do you think we can meet your grandfather, Merchant Finn?" he asked in a stern voice.
"I-I... don't know... I will l-let him know that you came by... You may leave now." Selena stuttered as she avoided their gazes and was defensive throughout the conversation.
"I see..." Captain Hamett narrowed his eyes before continuing, "...One last question, Lady Selena, what is that on your dress?"
"E-Eh?" Selena seemed alarmed as she looked down on her dress. The red-colored stains were clearly visible and gave off a strange smell.
"It's nothing...!! It's nothing...!! It is just juice I spilled...!!" Selena screamed as she stepped back and tried to cover her dress. She then turned to the maids and yelled at them.
"DIDN'T I TELL YOU TO GET ME A TOWEL...!! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING AROUND FOR?!"
Captain Hamett was now certain that something was horribly wrong. He motioned to the soldiers who followed him and some of them surrounded Selena while the others began searching the manor.
"W-What are you doing?!" Selena was shaking with fear and tried to cover it with her angry outburst.
"Lady Selena, please don't move while we check the premises." Captain Hamett replied.
"Captain Hamett, what's the meaning of this?" Wilfred turned around and acted confused.

"Isn't it obvious Sir Wilfred, I believe something horrible has happened to Merchant Finn and I am running an investigation." Hamett replied without turning around. He felt he was lucky to bump into Wilfred and Zane who was going to visit Finn and he was also glad that he decided to tag along otherwise he may have missed his chance to catch the killer red-handed.
"Something horrible? Whatever do you mean?" Zane stood up for Selena, or at least he acted like it. "Surely you are not suggesting that Cousin Selena has hurt our Grandfather, are you?"
"Master Zane, please stand aside. I have a few more questions for Lady Selena." Hamett asked Zane while he motioned a female soldier to grab Selena who nodded and was slowly approaching Selena.
"Don't touch me...!!" Selena screamed and whipped out a coin.
"I have a coin with the Royal Family's emblem on it." she declared with a flustered look.
The approaching female soldier was stunned in place and immediately bowed down. Those with the coin gifted by the Royal Family were favored by them and mishandling even a child, like Selena, would incur their wrath. The soldiers who were searching the place also froze. They looked towards their Captain for guidance who was standing with his eyes narrowed.
Wilfred and Zane knew that Selena had a coin from the Royal Family and this is exactly the reason why they approached Captain Hamett to be their executioner. Captain Hamett hated those who flaunted the coin from Royalty as one such person had tried to forcefully snatch his wife one time. The Royal Court rescinded the coin back when they heard of this incident but it left a deep mark in his soul. If anything, the response from Selena made him absolutely sure that she killed his good friend Finn Venbella and was now trying to get away with it.
"Keep searching...!!" Hamett commanded which took Selena by surprise.
"Wh-What?! You dare to ignore the coin from the Royal Family? Do you have a deathwish?" Selena panicked.
"Lady Selena..." Captain Hamett replied with a stern face, "...If I am wrong, I will gladly offer my head to you, but I hope you are prepared for what's to come if I am right."
"N-No..." Selena seemed to have a panic attack as she started to speak fragmented words, "N-No... Grandfather... assassin... N-Nurse..."
"Assassin?" Zane repeated the word out loud for all to hear.
"E-Eh? I-I... No, that nurse... s-she..." Selena stuttered and looked as if she would fall unconscious at any moment.
"Nurse? Nurse Ursula?" Wilfred acted as if he picked up on the meaning behind Selena's words.
"Do you know her?" Captain Hamett asked Wilfred.
"Hmm? I think so..." Wilfred spoke as he tried to remember, "Wasn't that the nurse hired by Lady Selena herself to take care of Old Man Finn?"
"W-What?!" Not only Selena but her maids also seemed surprised at that. Wasn't the Nurse hired by the Wyatts? Why were they trying to say she was hired by Selena.
"Yes..." Wilfred continued as he fished out a very convenient letter from his pocket.
"You see, my brother was worried about Old man Finn's health so he tried to send a nurse to take care of him, but the old man replied by saying that his granddaughter had already sent over a nurse." he replied as he handed "Finn's" letter to the Captain. The Captain suddenly thought that Selena may have hired Ursula to spy on the manor.

"N-N-No...!! I didn't hire her...!!" Selena seemed shocked by the implications.
"Then can you explain why your Grandfather's letter mentions so?" Hamett asked as he showed the letter which had the Venbella's seal on it to Selena.
"This... This..." Selena seemed horribly confused. She became overwhelmed by the situation and broke down crying.
"Waahhh... Why are you people bullying me? I didn't do anything."
The maids cringed at the sight. Seeing Selena cry was like seeing a Unicorn marrying Big-foot. It was extremely rare and at the same time, unbelievable. On the other hand, the Wyatts almost sprung out dancing. Wilfred kept spouting nonsense to Hamett to add fuel to the fire while Zane was trying to calm down Selena.
"Cousin Selena, just admit it. You have the coin from the Royal Family anyway. You will not go to prison." Zane tried to persuade Selena. Of Course, they knew Selena won't go to prison. Their goal was to make her look unworthy of the Venbella's inheritance. When this case will go to the Royal Court, they will definitely rule out Selena's sentence due to the coin but for the sake of fairness, they will also cut off Selena from the inheritance as they will think her actions were the result of the greed for the fortune.
"B-But I didn't really kill him..." Selena seemed to try to explain to Zane but had hesitant eyes as if she was hiding something.
"Cousin Selena..." Zane whispered to Selena, "I doubt anyone would believe you at this point. Just allow yourself to be arrested otherwise Captain Hamett may get rough."
"B-But..."
"Cousin... trust me..." Zane took his chance to place his hand on her soft shoulder and almost jumped at how soft it felt. He barely controlled his raging hormones and continued.
"...Would I lie to you?"
"That... b-but... Grandfather... sm-smell..."
"Yes, I admit our Grandfather stinks but he was still an important figure and----"
*WHHAACCKK...!! SLAM....!!!*
A foot forcefully smashed on Zane's face which if seen in slow motion, would show Zane's face slowly crunching to look like a smashed tin can. He rolled on the ground to the feet of Wilfred and Captain Hamett.
"WHO THE HELL STINKS, YOU BRAT!! YOUR FATHER IS THE STINKY ONE...!! YOUR WHOLE FAMILY STINKS LIKE A SKUNK...!!"
"Who dares to...!! Eh?" Wilfred's outburst was cut short by the presence of a short bearded old man who smelled like jasmines as he had just took a very refreshing bath.
"Y-Y-Y-You...!!" Zane trembled as he pointed a finger at the old man as if he had seen a ghost.
"Finn... Venbella?" Captain Hamett had his eyes wide open and his jaw had dropped at the sight.
However, old man Finn ignored everyone and turned to hold the crying Selena.
"Little Lina...!! Why are you crying?" he was both panicking and furious to see his precious granddaughter crying. He looked around to see soldiers surrounding her and many more searching his manor. He turned to look at Hamett with a red face, full of anger.
"Hamett...!! You son of a bitch...!! How dare you make my granddaughter cry...!!"
"No... I-I... thought..." Captain Hamett was in extreme panic. Of all the things to happen, he did not expect the old man to be alive. But if he was alive, why was Selena looking so guilty.
"Grandfather..." Selena's sobbing voice attracted everyone's attention.
"I-It was my fault. It seems they all came to meet you, but because I pointed out that you smelled, you had to take an immediate bath. I felt bad and I tried to explain it to them, but they.. but they... Waahhh...!!" Selena began crying again which was like pouring gasoline in an already exploding volcano.
"Hamett...!! Since when is it a crime to take a bath...!!" Finn lashed out again.
"All of you...!! Get away from my granddaughter...!!" He commanded the soldiers who were still surrounding Selena.
"N-No... I think there's been a misunderstanding...!!" Hamett said and he recounted everything that happened after he came to the manor which made Finn angrier.
"There was an assassination attempt on me...!! But it was thwarted by my brave granddaughter...!!" Finn exploded and explained everything that happened up to the point where he went to take a bath.
"B-But the blood?" Captain Hamett asked pointing at Selena.
"That's not blood, you idiot...!! That's some sort of health juice she drinks. She had my chef made it for her." Finn explained.
Captain Hamett saw stars. He almost fainted by the horrible and irresponsible behavior he had just committed. Didn't he saw that he would gladly offer his head to Selena if she was proven innocent? He grabbed his own neck as if someone would cut it off any second. However, he suddenly had a thought. He looked at Wilfred with suspicious eyes.
Wilfred was panicking and looking for a way to leave. Zane was simply stunned as if he was sure he did not expect the old man to be alive. Hamett narrowed his eyes. He was now sure that this whole thing was some sort of plan set up by the Wyatts. However, he had no proof.
But, Selena seemed to have read those thoughts and began speaking to her Grandfather.
"Grandfather, why did you say that I sent Nurse Ursula to take care of you? I never met that woman before in my life."
"Eh? When did I say that?" Finn was more confused at the sudden question.
"In the letter... you wrote to the Wyatts." Selena said as she pointed a finger at the escaping Wilfred and Zane who were almost at the door. The sudden attention froze them in place.
"A letter? When the hell did I write one to you?" Finn narrowed his eyes.
"...and besides, why would I say that the Nurse was sent by Selena when it was Zane who personally brought her to the manor."
"WHAT?!" Captain Hamett was shocked and turned to look at Zane who looked guilty as hell. By this time, he had realized how easily he was being used by the Wyatts. It infuriated him on how the Wyatts manipulated him and almost had him imprison a girl who was not even eighteen yet.
"WILFRED WYATT...!! EXPLAIN TO ME RIGHT NOW ON WHAT'S HAPPENING?"
"Eeek...!! I-I..." Wilfred was sweating enough to fill a lake as he realized how horribly the tables had turned on him. But before he could respond, a soldier dragged a screaming woman in the main hall.
"Captain, this woman was trying to escape from the window. She had a bag full of valuables from this manor."
"Eek...!!" the woman was thrown on the floor who turned out to be no one but Nurse Ursula.
"You...?" Wilfred clasped his heart. 'Didn't I tell this woman to escape as soon as the job was done. Why is she still here?'
"Are you... Nurse Ursula?" Captain Hamett asked her after reading the atmosphere in the room.
"I-I..." Nuse Ursula panicked. She looked at Wilfred. The original plan was to run away if the job was done or failed. However, when she notified Wilfred of the failed job via the communication ring, he had told her to stay put instead. This confused her but she complied anyway. She was just resting when she heard him coming in and accusing Selena of her Grandfather's death. She panicked as she realized something was not right and tried to escape but was caught by a soldier.
Wilfred quickly put his hand in his pocket and sent a message to Ursula.
'Tell them you were hired by Selena.'
The Nurse felt the ring and nodded discreetly. She then rammed her head against the floor and started screaming.
"I WAS HIRED BY THE WYATTS TO SPY ON FINN VENBELLA AND I WAS THE ONE WHO LET THE ASSASSIN INSIDE THE MANOR WHO CAME TO KILL HIM BECAUSE I WAS ORDERED TO DO SO BY...." Ursula pointed at a person and proclaimed.
"...ZANE WYATT."

The Stars Have Eyes
The universe was a vast, empty, dark, and uncaring place. Then life happened, and the universe was changed forever. Only a teeny-tiny bit, but definitely different. Then again, the universe changes a teeny-tiny bit every second of every day. For instance, if someone were to get off the couch and randomly drink a glass of milk? Bam! One less glass of milk in the universe. Changed forever. Well, excluding any time-travel shenanigans, but anyone who puts a big old hole in the time-space continuum just to un-drink a glass of milk should really reevaluate their priorities. Unless, of course, they were attempting to prevent some massive catastrophe vis-a-vis said glass of milk. Such a scenario is by no means impossible, as one should never underestimate the importance of calcium. Another important tip for any life forms out there is to keep things in perspective. Some look at the vastness of creation in relation to themselves and go, ‘Man, this sucks!’ These people really need to narrow their focus. Sure, they will never affect anything happening on the other end of the galaxy, but so what? That’s way the heck over there, where it doesn’t matter. Therefore, in order to maintain a healthy mindset, it is important to narrow one’s perspective to the things and people that affect them, and that they can affect in turn. But what happens if one is an unfathomable cosmic being from beyond the veil of reality? What happens when such an existence is capable of influencing entire swathes of the universe just by its presence? A creature such as Magh'rathlak the Observer? That particular entity is only about average as far as reality-warping creatures from the dawn of time go, so its influence over the fabric of reality is rather limited. And it still struggles to keep things in perspective. That, among other things, is why it decided to narrow its worldview a bit by compressing the maddening vastness of its being into a single corporeal form. Magh'rathlak had never tried such a feat, but that wasn't about to stop it. After all, how hard could being human possibly be?
