《The Ride to Love》The Realization Part 2

"Knock knock," I hear as Dr. Williams steps into my room. "Nice to see you're awake still!"

I scoff. "Believe me, I don't want to be! I'm just kinda sorta afraid of falling asleep."

"You can sleep if you want to!" She smiles, checking my IV again. "It's a common thing for people to not want to sleep, but it's healthy for you. You need your rest. Didn't anyone ever tell you that sleep is the best medicine?"

"Yeah, but," I pause, but get cut off.

"Dr. Williams, you're needed for an emergency in 208," a girl, not much older than me, says, stepping into the doctor's place. "I've got this from here." My doctor scurries away, and I look to the new nurse. "Hi, I'm Addie!"

"Another nurse?" I ask, groaning. "There's just so many of you guys! I'm never going to remember names!"

She giggles, checking the IV, repeating the same steps as Dr. Williams. "I'm one of your day nurses. There are a lot of us, but don't worry about names. You'll catch on sooner or later."

"How long am I going to be here?" I exclaim, groaning again at the pain.

"Well," she says, grabbing a syringe, "I overheard Dr. Williams say right around a week to let you heal as much as possible, but don't take my word for it. That may change." She taps the syringe, putting it up to my line.

"Is that more morphine?" I ask, a little more excitedly than I intended.

"Yes," she laughs. "Do you feel like you need it?" I nod frantically. Okay, so I didn't tough it out. Give me a break, I was in a motorcycle accident!

Addie leaves after taking my vitals, and soon I'm feeling good. Like, really good. I grab my mom's phone, open the YouTube app, and watch Vine compilation videos. My parents already left to get me a new phone, so I'm left alone with my cackling and screeching from watching Vines.

That is, until Ryder walks in, holding a huge teddy bear!

"Is that for me?" I ask, my words slurring again. I reach my hands out, opening and closing my fists like a baby that wants something. "Gimme, gimme, gimme!"

Ryder chuckles, handing me the huge bear. I snuggle up to it, laughing as hard as I can. "What's so funny?" He asks with amusement.

I giggle. "Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica!" I bust out into fully hysterics, and a couple of tears stream down. "Oh no! I'm crying! But I'm not sad." I frown.

"I would say those are happy tears," Ryder says, laughing with me. He starts playing with the ends of my hair, which I let out of my bun earlier this morning so that we could wash it.

"I am confusion," I say, quoting one of my favorite videos. It's, sadly, not a Vine, but I guess it'll have to do.

Ryder just laughs at me again, still playing with my hair. "I wanted to give you that bear as an apology," he says with a sad look in his eyes.

I reach over and push the corners of his mouth up, making him smile. "No sad!" I say, then boop the tip of his nose. "Get glad!" I start laughing again. God, I'm just too hilarious!

"Someone is on drugs" he laughs, digging something else out of his pocket. I just nod and laugh more in response. He then pulls out a small velvet box.

I start to panic. "Ryder!" I gasp dramatically. "I thought we agreed! No proposing!"

"Stop being so dramatic," he says, rolling his eyes. "Now lean up. This is your one month anniversary present." I smile wide, then lean up, following his orders. He moves my hair to one side of my shoulder, reaching behind me. "Now look," he says while settling back into a chair.

I look down to see a beautiful necklace now wrapped around my neck. There's a small charm on it. Lifting it up, I see a small silver heart with the letter 'R' engraved on the top left. "'R' for Ryder?" I ask, holding back tears.

"Yes, 'R' for Ryder." He smiles, leaning over to me until our noses touch. I giggle, then kiss him lightly.

"You're cute," I say in a goofy tone. "But not as cute as Mr. Bear." I giggle more, then look at my new teddy bear with a wink.

Ryder looks to the bear, then back to me, brushing a stray hair out of my face. I blush at his touch. "Mr. Bear may be cuter than me, but you're my girlfriend, not his." He smirks, then leans down to kiss my forehead. "Now, about this morphine high video you mentioned."

I laugh, then look through my mom's phone. Thankfully my dad sent it to her. I pull it up, thumb hovering over the play button. "Fair warning," I say while looking at him. "I don't remember much of what I said, but knowing me, it was fucking hilarious!" He just nods with a smile, and I press play.

"Hey! At least get my good side!" I laugh at myself, and Ryder rolls his eyes. We sit and watch the rest of the video, me laughing at myself, and Ryder mostly just rolling his eyes.

A few minutes in, and I watch as I tell my parents and the doctor that Ryder is my boyfriend. I hear my dad scream, "boyfriend!?" in the background of the video, and Ryder audibly gulps. I poke his Adam's Apple, giggle, then turn back to the video.

A few moments later, and the doctor leaves in the video. My parents start questioning me about Ryder, and I say the unthinkable.

"I love him!" In the video I'm making a kissy face, but right now, in present time, my eyes are wide open, staring in shock. My breathing has stopped. I'm too sober for this, I need more morphine.

"Love?" My dad turned the camera onto my mom, and she's beaming with happiness and excitement. Oh no, I told my parents that I love Ryder, and now he's watching the video evidence.

"Loooove," video-me sings. What is wrong with me? How do I not remember this? I look over to see Ryder looking down, scratching the back of his neck. He looks up to me, and I quickly look away.

"Corina," he whispers. I keep my gaze on the door, praying for a nurse to walk in anytime now, but my prayers don't get answered. "Corina, look at me." I can't. What if he's mad, or wants to break up? I've already had so much happen to me, which I still don't even know all of. I can't handle the emotions right now!

In any other circumstance I would run right now, probably straight to one of my bikes and ride. That, however, is not an option right now. Instead, I decide to man up, facing my fears. I'm the one that said that I love him, even if I was high as a kite.

Slowly turning my head to him, I clear my throat, preparing for a huge speech. "Corina," he says before I can start, his eyes glued to mine with tears glazing over. My breath hitches, and I know this is it. This is when he breaks up with me, leaving me all alone. I hope he at least leaves Mr. Bear.

"I'm sorry, I know I scared you." I start to tear up. "Ryder, this is your out. If you want to leave, go ahead. I won't yell for you, begging you to come back. I'll leave you alone, never pounding on your door or tapping on the wall again." I look down to my lap, hearing his footsteps as he stands up and walks to the door. I sit, waiting for the door to open, but it never does.

"I don't want an out," I hear him whisper, making his way back to me. "I only want you. Please, look at me." I glance up to see him standing in front of my bed with a heart shaped box of chocolates. "I-"

Just then, my parents burst in the door with a brown Verizon bag. "My phone!" I shout, reaching for the bag as my mom hands it to me. Ryder looks at me with a pained expression, and I mouth a sorry to him. He takes a seat on my bed next to my feet, and smiles to my parents.

"Nice to see you again, Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton," he says, shaking my dad's hand. My mom pulls him into a tight hug, squealing with excitement.

"Please, call me Anne," she says as she pulls away, holding his shoulders. "I see you've cleaned yourself up, even got some sleep." She smiles at the boy, and he returns it.

"I'm just happy to see Corina awake and doing well." He glances over to me, and I stick my tongue out, making him and my mom laugh. "At least we know she's still a goofball."

"Always have been, always will be," I say, pointing finger guns at him."Now, I'm going to set up my new phone. I'm going insane!" Reaching into the bag, I pull out an Apple box, and see a beautiful iPhone X pictured on it, and I dance with excitement. "Finally, an upgrade from my stupid 6S Plus!"

While I set up the phone, mom, dad, and Ryder sit off to the side, talking quietly. I strain myself to hear them, curious as to what they could be saying.

"Has he tried to come back?" my dad asks.

"Not since I've been here," Ryder replies.

"I'm just worried about her having to go back to her apartment," mom chimes in. "I mean, he's right there..."

I hear Ryder sigh. "Don't worry about that. After you two head back home, I'll keep an out eye out. He can't stay hidden for long." Who are they talking about? "He's bound to come back at some point."

Ignoring their secrecy, I return to my phone, which is ready for me to put my Apple information in. Soon, it's ready to go, the apps from my previous phone downloading, messages flying in. One voicemail pops up, and I raise the phone to my ear to listen.

"Listen here, you little bitch. I'm coming for you. I'll be watching. You may be safe now inside of that hospital with your parents and your little boyfriend protecting you, but trust me, you won't be safe for long. Just remember, one bike down, one to go. And don't forget about that piece of shit car. After those are gone, it's you. You won't annoy me anymore."

"What the fuck?" I shout. My parents and Ryder rush to my side with concern. I gulp, then play the voicemail on speaker for them to hear.

"Does it show the number?" Ryder asks, anger filling his voice. I shake my head no, a few tears dripping down my cheeks.

My dad takes my phone, rushing out the door. "I'm taking this to the police." The door slams, leaving us in silence.

Moments pass, then my mom speaks up. "I'm going with him. Ryder, I already know you will, but please stay with my baby girl." He nods, and she leans down to kiss the top of my head. "We'll be back, honey."

Once she's out the door, my tears quickly turn to sobs. Ryder goes to my right side, making sure he doesn't hurt me, then crawls into the tiny bed with me, holding me tight. "Shh," he coos, kissing my cheek. I nuzzle into him, my tears wetting his shirt. "I won't let anything happen to you."

"Hey, Ryder," I say, calming down.

"Hm," he mumbles into my hair.

"I meant it, you know."

"Meant what?" He asks, sitting up.

"That I love you." I can't believe I said it. To his face. Completely sober. Well, mostly sober. That morphine is strong.

He lays back down, keeping me tight in his arms. "I love you too, idiot."

We fall asleep, holding onto each other like our lives depend on it. Well, I guess mine sort of does.

More drama! It got so intense for me while I was writing that I had to stop and watch Vine compilations on YouTube to calm myself down lol
