《The Ride to Love》The Realization

Not long after the nurse, Hannah, leaves my room, I start to drift off to sleep again. I'm so exhausted and weak, barely able to lift my hand and touch a button, praying it's the one to call someone in and not one that would, like, kill me or something.

Knowing my luck, that's the exact one I pressed.

I wait a few minutes, fighting off sleep, too afraid that if I do sleep, I won't wake back up. Nobody shows up, and I know I hit the wrong button. "I'm nearing the end," I whisper out, hoping someone hears me. "Please take care of my bikes."

Suddenly the door opens with a slight squeak, and I hear heels clicking against the floor. "Hey," I hear a sweet, familiar voice say. "I'm glad to see you up and responsive!" I slowly open my eyes to see a middle aged woman with sleek black hair.

"Not to be rude," I say breathing heavily. I'm so wore out. "But who are you?"

The kind woman chuckles lightly, checking my IV. "I'm Dr. Williams. I've been taking care of you the past two days. Do you know where you're at?"

I slump down as far as I possibly can in this stupid bed, thinking as hard as I can to remember anything. "I'm going to guess a hospital, but please correct me if I'm wrong."

She chuckles again, replacing the bag of fluid leading to this God forsaken needle in my arm. "You're right about that," she laughs a little more. "I'm glad to see you making jokes. That's usually a pretty positive thing."

"Can you please tell me what's going on? I'm kinda clueless here." I groan lightly at the pain slowly creeping up my left side. Dr. Williams notices, pushing some fluid into the line.

"That's morphine," she points the now empty syringe. "It's the good stuff. You should be feeling much better in no time." She smiles and slowly walks away.

"Wait!" I yell as loudly as I can. "Are you going to tell me why I'm here? I don't remember anything, and I'm a nosey bitch."

She laughs again, turning back around. "Allow me to call your parents first. I'm sure they would love to come see you. Plus, you'll probably want them for consolation." She leaves my room, silently shutting my door. In fear of falling asleep, I look for my phone, but it's nowhere to be found.

"Aw, come on!" I groan in frustration. "Now how am I supposed to entertain myself?" I look around more, spotting a remote to the TV on the small table beside of my bed. "I guess that will have to do," I scoff, scrolling through the late night infomercials, settling on one about some vacuum.

I'm awakened, yet again. Can't a girl sleep around here?

I open my eyes, and see my parents and Dr. Williams entering the room. "Whaddup?" I slur out, my thoughts blurry. Oh no, am I high on morphine right now? "I feel like I haven't seen you motherfuckers in sooooo long!" Yeah, I'm high.

"Corina, sweetie, please watch your language," my mom snorts out.

"Mrs. Hamilton, it's really no use. She's on morphine right now, and a decently high dose of it. Just let it takes it course, and be sure to record as much of it as you can on your phone," I hear the doctor say, stifling a laugh.

"Yeah, mom," I say laughing. "Listen to the pretty lady! She's smart!" I giggle more. I hear the little ping of a video starting, and look over to see my dad pointing his phone at me. "Hey!" I yell as sternly as I can, but laugh anyway. "At least get my good side." I tap my left cheek with my palm, indicating my supposed 'good side.'

"The doctor said to do it," my dad laughs.

I see Dr. Williams make her way toward me. "Corina, I know you're pretty hyped up on your medicine, but I want you to focus as hard as you can."

I close my eyes tight, scrunching up my whole face. "Like this?" I ask. "This is my thinking face."

"Just like that. It's perfect," she chuckles. "Now, do you still know where you are?"

I scrunch my face as hard as I possibly can. "The hospital!" I screech, making my mom wince. "Sorry mama, I never meant to hurt youuuuu," I sing, mocking Eminem's "Cleaning out my Closet."

"Very good," the doctor says. "Now, do you know which hospital you're in?"

I scrunch up again, but slowly go to a deadpan. "No," I squeak. "Does that mean I fail the test? I don't want to fail!" I start sobbing, afraid of failure. "I'm so sorry!"

"No, no, no! You're not failing! You're doing great!" The doctor reassures me.

"Really?" I hiccup, the last few tears streaming down my face.

"Really," she replies with a smile. "We'll move onto another question, okay?" I nod frantically, hoping I get the next one right. "Now. Do you know what year it is?"

"2018!" I screech again, looking apologetically to my mom.

"Very good!" I see Dr. Williams smile, and I smile my biggest smile right back. "What's you're name?"

"Corina Lynn Hamilton," I announce with pride.

"Perfect! Do you know where you live?"

"Well, I used to live with my parents in Ohio, but my motorcycle got cold, so we made the long, treacherous trip down here to Daytona Beach. I started out riding in the back seat of my dad's Chevy Silverado, but they got annoying. I made them stop at a Harley shop somewhere in Virginia, and I bought a bike there so I could make the rest of the trip all by myself! Now, I live here, well, not here in this hospital, but here in this city in The Gardens, a cute little apartment complex just off of the beach. I live alone now, with my two Harley's and my Subaru!" I exclaim, telling her the story. "I live next to Gina and Steve, and my boyfriend, Ryder!"

"Boyfriend!?" I hear my dad hardly choke out, and the doctor shoots him a stern look. He settles down, but still seems angry.

"Oh, daddy, don't be so pissed off!" I start giggling. "He's a sweetie, and such a good kisser. Anyway, you interrupted my story. How rude!" I say, impersonating Stephanie from Full House. "I'm so sorry, Dr. Williams, please let me continue." She nods with an amused smile. "So that's the story all about how my life got flip turned upside down!"

"What a beautiful story," she says. "I'm glad you remembered so much! Also, that was a very good Will Smith impersonation! Fresh Prince was one of my favorite shows when I was younger!"

"What can I say, I'm just good," I say giggling, attempting to flip my hair, but it's not on my shoulder! "Okay, where the fuck is my hair?" I start freaking out, looking frantically for my curls.

"It's on top of your head in a bun," my mom replies, rolling her eyes. I place my hand carefully on top of my head, sighing in relief when I feel the pile of hair.

"Well," Dr. Williams says, "that's all I have for now, Corina. I'll be back this afternoon to take some more blood samples and do some small check ups, but as for now, just press your button if you need anything." She walks away again, her heels clicking down the hallway. I mimic the sound with my tongue, giggling.

"So, boyfriend, huh?" My dad interrupts my clicking.

"Jim..." my mom sighs.

"Yes, dad," I say with a smile. "Boyfriend! I love him!" I say with a kissy face.

"Love?" My mom asks excitedly.

"Loveeee," I laugh, saying in a goofy tone. "I miss Ryder! Where is he?"

"Sweetheart, he's at his apartment," my mom quietly explains. I start to pout, crossing my arms. "He's stopped by a few times, sitting by your side, but we sent him home. The boy was a mess."

"Silly boy," I say. "He needs to clean up if he's such a mess!"

"That's why we sent him home," she says, and I slowly close my eyes. "Rest, honey. You need to heal." I hum a reply before letting sleep take over.

"Get away from me!" He screams. "I don't want see you ever again!"

I start running, as fast as I possibly can, but the pain in my side makes me stumble. "Please," I whimper.

"No, Corina!" He starts screaming again. I lay on the ground, unable to get up. "This is what you deserve," he snarls as the lights come closer. "This is what you get for being so clingy." The lights are inches away, and I scream out in panic.

I shoot up, screaming. My sheets and clothes are soaked in sweat, and I'm panting. My mom is instantly by my side, stroking my cheek. "Honey, what's wrong?"

"I think I just had a nightmare," I shudder, recalling the events of my dream.

"I think it's the morphine," my dad says, right at my mom's side. "Dr. Williams mentioned nightmares as a possible side effect."

My mom stands there, worry all over her face. "Mom," I say. She looks into my eyes, her's filled to the brim with tears. I smile lightly, grabbing her hand. "I'm fine. Really. Now please, go get some rest." She nods sadly, making her way back to the cot she's sharing with my dad. I lower my head back onto the pillow, watching Daybreak on the news channel, afraid to fall back asleep, yet again.

I sit for a few minutes, my mind racing. Why am I here? Why am I in so much pain? Is whatever happened really so bad that my parents had come come all the way here? Where the hell is Ryder?

Sitting on these questions, I can't take not knowing anymore. "Mom," I whisper. "Are you still awake?"

"Yes, sweetie. What's wrong?" She sits up, looking at me with concern.

"I refuse to go on a second longer without knowing what happened." She makes her way over to me, sitting in the chair. She grabs my hand, rubbing small circles on top of it. "Please," I cry out.

She sighs, looking away from me. A small tear rolls down her cheek, and I reach over with my other hand to wipe it away. I wince in pain at moving. "Do you need more morphine?" She asks, reaching for the call button.

"No, I'm fine." I grab her hand, pulling it away from the button. "I'm a Hamilton! I can tough through it. Just please, tell me."

Her hand returns to mine, and she sighs again. "This is going to be a lot to take in, so if you need me to stop, let me know." I nod, and wait for her to continue. She takes a long pause, then says, "you were in an accident."

My eyes go wide, my breathing coming to a halt. "What was I driving?" I ask, unable to make eye contact.

She squeezes my hand. "The Nightster." I start sobbing, heartbroken.

"Is- is it t-totaled," I whisper through the sobs. She nods with a sad smile, and I sob even more. "W-where is it-t n-now?"

"It was towed away to the towing company," she squeezes my hand again. "We made sure they didn't take it to a scrap yard. We wanted to make sure you could get it back... if you wanted it, that is."

My sobs fade, leaving me with just a few tears. "Thank you," I smile. "If you don't mind, could you please have her towed to my garage? I want to restore her."

"Corina," she pauses, taking a deep breath, "I don't know if you'll be able to. The frame got bent up pretty bad. Almost everything got tore up. You might be better off just totaling it out."

"I said, I want to restore her!" I snarl. My mom winces at my sudden anger. "I'm sorry," I quickly say in a soft tone. "I just... I just can't let her go. She means so much to me." I begin to sob again.

My mom hugs me, softly as to not hurt me. "I know. We'll get her back and into your garage as soon as possible." I sob even more. She pulls back, wiping tears from my cheeks. "I love you honey, you know that right?"

"Of course I know, mom. I love you, too." We stay there for moment before I pull away. "Mom?" I ask again. She nods, showing me her attention. "Where's my phone? I want to text Ryder and let him know I'm okay."

"It got ruined in the wreck," she says. I wince at the word 'wreck,' and she squeezes my hand, yet again. Might as well add bruised hand to the list of my injuries. "Your dad and I can go to Verizon later today to get you a new one, but for now I'll let you use mine." She walks over to the cot, reaching down and picking her phone up from the floor. "Here," She says, handing it to me.

"Thank you," I mutter, unlocking the phone. I pull up messages, and typed Ryder's number in.

"Hey, it's Corina. I hope you're resting right now. I just wanted to let you know I'm awake and doing alright, but you did miss my crazy morphine high. If you want to see it, I think I remember my dad recording it, so it must be funny. When you come visit maybe we can watch it together. I'm sorry for being crazy, but I do miss you and want to see you. Maybe you can give me a clingy pass or something... Just this once? Sorry this message is so long. This is my mom's phone, just text back on here if you want to talk!"

I hit send, and almost immediately get a reply.

"I'm so sorry. I'm such an idiot. I'll be on my way in a few minutes to see this video 😏"

Staring at his text, I realize something. Ryder looks just like the smirking emoji when he smirks at me!

So, there's that. I'm not good at dramatic, traumatizing stuff, but it makes the story good. If it were up to me, every story would be happy all throughout, but where's the fun in that?

It is Wednesday, my dudes.

Sorry, but I'm probably going to quote that Vine every time I update on a Wednesday.

Tell me what you think about Corina's wreck. And, if you like the chapter, be sure to vote!
