《The Ride to Love》The Move In

Riding past the beautiful view of the beach will never get tiring. We finally got to Daytona just short of 3 o'clock this afternoon, but I haven't been able to get off the bike just yet. I've rode the same loop almost 10 times now, taking in the view more and more each time. My dad brought the Nightster out of the trailer, and is now hot on my trail, with my mom on the back. Over our headsets, he says "Corina. I know it's beautiful and you're very excited, but riding in the city sucks. Your mom and I both need to relax and come to terms with you moving down here, abandoning your family, starting over without us-"

"Dad," I interrupt with a slight giggle. "Give it up. I'm 24. You knew this would happen eventually."

"Yeah, we imagined you moving across town though," my mom interjected. "Not over 12 hours away. Let's just go and get you somewhat moved in." And with that, I give them a quick thumbs up before leaning into the last turn, leading to my new apartment complex.

"Open the garage door," my dad yells to me as I tamper with the opener. "The sun is baking down onto Black Betty, and she's getting toasty."

"You're the one who decided to black her out instead of getting chrome parts!" I love my dad, but that was such a stupid decision on his part. "This damn opener won't work. I think the battery might need replaced."

Finally, after the both of my parents mess with the garage opener, calling the landlord, and replacing the battery, we all draw the conclusion that I received the wrong opener. Some poor guy across the street and 4 apartments down come out of his place screaming in a panic. "What the fuck is even going on? This demonic thing is spazzing out! I can't deal with this anymore!"

"Ms. Hamilton, that would be Mr. Shapiro. He can be a little," he pauses, trying to find the right words, "dramatic, to say the least." Then he looks over to my neighbor, Mr. Shapiro, and says "Calm down, we had a little mix up, and Ms. Hamilton here received your extra opener in place of her own. On the bright side, we've finally found it for you!"

My new neighbor trudges over, snatching the opener out of my landlord's hand, while grumbling "my rent will be a day late this month, and after this fiasco," he pauses to wave his arms around, " I DO NOT expect any backlash." And with that, he trudges back over to his own apartment, but not without a final "Fuck!" shouted as his finger accidentally grazes the opener's button, causing his garage to open one final time.

"Please allow me to run to the office and grab your openers, and I do apologize for any inconvenience." My landlord rushes off, as fast as he can, going the long way around to avoid Mr. Shapiro's glare from his window.

Not long after, my dad and I have my bikes placed perfectly in my garage, which is actually quite roomy for only being a one stall. It is quite long, so with my bikes parked, I could still park my car, a 2016 Subaru WRX STI, with room to spare. That is, if I had brought my car. Sensing my longing for my beautiful Subaru, mom sadly whispers "I can't believe you didn't even drive the car. I mean, what will you do when it rains?"

"Mom, I bring the sun with me. Wherever I go, there will be no rain. I only radiate sunshine vibes," I joke with her to lighten the mood. "Plus I have my rain suit. I mean, I've rode through worse before."

"Oh sweet baby girl," my mom trails off, just as a dark storm cloud begins to move, covering the bright, happy sun.

"I can't believe it, but we survived moving you into your first apartment," dad says, falling back onto the couch. "When did you get old enough for this? Hell, I swear just yesterday you were taking your own diapers off."

"They pissed me off. Not my fault those damn things chaffed my legs to hell." I grimace at the thought of having to have ever worn a diaper. "So, next topic. When do you guys plan on heading back?"

"Jim, she's eager to start her new life without us!" mom says with fake tears. "Oh, our baby girl just wants her embarrassing parents gone, out of her way." This time, she falls into my dad's chest, now full on fake sobbing. "I guess it's time for us to pack up and move on, she doesn't need us anymore."

"And you say I'm the dramatic one," dad whispers to me while chuckling, moving my mom's hair from her cheek to kiss her lightly.

"I get it from both of you, now shush. I'm trying to listen to the storm." Maybe my mom was right about me needing to bring the car. I can ride in regular rain, but a full on torrential downpour is something that nobody should ride in, especially when the roads begin to flood. "But I only asked you guys for your safety. You may be driving an excessively lifted truck, but this is just too much to begin your long trip back home. My apartment is small, but please, stay for at least the night."

"Aw, Anne, she's going to miss us," my dad replies in a goofy tone.

"Are you stupid? Of course I'm going to miss you guys. You're my parents. I wouldn't be me without you," I say enveloping them into the biggest hug my small stature allows. With that final statement, the tears start to flow as reality sets in. I've officially moved out of my parent's house, my childhood home, leaving them and all of my memories behind 12 hours away from my new life.
